DS Multiplayer - your experiences
« on: February 11, 2005, 03:59:43 AM »
Hi,

I'm hoping some of you guys can help me. I'm writing a piece about the DS for a British
newspaper, and I want to talk about how people are playing multiplayer games with it. Is
anyone out there playing a lot against friends, or even strangers? What are you playing,
and where are you playing it?Are you using picto-chat a lot, where, and with whom? That
sort of thing. Any help given will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hey there, Stuart.  I've played a couple of multiplayer matches so far myselft.  I've played it with a classmate at college, we both brought our DS's into the compuer lab and while we took a break, we brought them out and played Super Mario 64 DS for a while, which was fun.  I've also played it at work, I work at a cafe and when my friend and I get some spare time, we'll bring out our DS's and play some Mario 64.  A third person at work has a DS, so hopefully soon we'll get some three player matches going.  Haven't been able to try out Metroid multiplayer yet, but I'm hoping to soon.  The multiplayer so far has been really enjoyable, especially because you don't have to worry about wires and in some cases, having multiple copies of a game which is nice.  Good luck on your article, hope this helped!

I found a really cool use for Picto-chat. I use it to help my 5yr old study the alphabet and his numbers. Like most kids he would rather play (he stole my first DS so I had to buy a second) than study. With Picto-chat, I send him letters, numbers, or small words to see what he recognizes, now he doesn't mind studying at all. when were done studying we get some multi-player Mario going.

One other quick thing. I'd like to quote the posts from Toy and Toad in the feature. Would you be happy to give me a name and some rough idea of where you're from (I only need a Christian name and a state). It's just that it looks better in print if I can say (in my case), Stuart from Sussex, England than StuartA from England. Thanks again for your help, and thanks to you too, Saviour.

I don't actually own a DS, but yet I've experienced Metriod Multiplayer. I was at Best Buy and I saw the DS booth, started to play single player. After awhile an employee came up to me with his own DS, and in a matter of seconds I was in an arena battling it out with someone I knew nothing about. I was new, and I could tell he was taking it easy on me. But, I think he was surprised to see me learn so quick, even advance tactics (like rolling behind the player and popping up to shoot them). He ran away a couple times, which frustrated me. Emotions went back and forth till the winner was named. Not me; but I gave him a run for his money. Overall, it was a nice experience and I'm now actually sold on the DS concept.

The big surprise hit at work is Zoo Keeper.  A friend bought Zoo Keeper, and we'd challenge each other.  Two matches became four, four became eight, eight became...well, you get the picture.  Soon a small crowd was forming, and the loser would hand their DS to another player so that they could join in on the fun.  We've also tried it with one person in the room next door, which still works moderately well.  There's nothing like getting the paint bucket power up and hearing the tormented cry of your opponent in the next room!  Everyone seems to be able to get into it because of its real pick-up-and-play factor, as well as the fact that the games both rely on luck as well as skill, so a hardcore player can still lose to someone who's just picked it up.
