Videogames interacting with Real Life!!

Virtual object interacting with real life in real time - imagine gaming of the future

RTS set up with your backyard or livingroom as the terrain,
the surface area of your dresser/desk being a level for a Mario to complete/navigate
or you can play The Sims in your sisters Barbie house

what do all of you think about this technology and its possibility to be used in a future console (i.e. Revolution)

remember this quote by Iwata - April 11, 2004 - Gamespy.com

Quote

"We are going in a different direction than Sony. We believe that other companies are already investing in state-of-the-art semiconductor development, says Iwata. "Nintendo is not actually trying to create a state-of-the-art technology that is not known to the world. We are reviewing technologies that are in the early stages of development [by other companies]. Nintendo should be able to find the optimal solution to make the best possible hardware by cooperating with several partners."

The idea makes for a neat toy but it's no good for games.  You can't have videogames where the player is required to have a certain amount of physical space available.  Some of us live in small apartments.  Some of us are forced by our parents to limit playing to our own room.  Space is an unknown constant and a successful videogame can't be made with that sort of expensive variable.  Buy our RTS!  You must own at least an acre of property to enjoy it!

Plus Nintendo makes most of their decisions based on Japan.  Their plan to "revolutionize" gaming is based on the Japanese market.  Japan has a huge population crammed into a few small islands.  They don't have the space to play with something like this.  If the Xbox is too big for Japan then a system that requires a whole room to play a game obviously is too big.

you could also make Eye-Toy like games where you have much much more interactivity with the objects on the screen.

I don't think you would necessarily need 'an acre' of space to make a sizable game out of the stuff around you.  If they could incorporate a very good zoom and some very detailed miniatures
you could make some interesting terrain that could never be the same twice and easily manipulated during play.

But also think of the broadband connection between systems, you could play a RTS against me in
TYP's back yard, or a fighting game aginst Bill on his dresser. Playing Pikmin 3 in your moms garden.

The possibilites of what could be done with this tech and user interaction seem very interesting.
(I know the above examples seem a little gimmicky, they're just quick examples)
I'm not saying that this will make it into a next-gen machine, but I think its invlolvment into gaming could be "revolutionary"

That could make army men (ewww!) comeback.
And it accually sounds pretty neat.
And if it's unknow then it's a variable.

if this were true it would generate a new market of games designed from the ground up as fun virtual toys that adults can enjoy as much as children.

also here is what i said on another forum about this

All the major rummors concerning the Revolution say gyration and backwards compatibility with Cube software. If that is true then the new controller will be able to play traditionaly designed games as well as do something like allow you to hold a 3d sword in your hand in Zelda and not have to wory about button combos to fight in a game; all you do is move with your analog sticks and swing with the controller handle in your hand.

these are not holograms, they are virtual holograms. with three stationary cameras you would be able to rotate the virtual hologram/camera angle on your tv screen just as in true 3d space using either a joystick or tilt sensor.

i guess MS will be forced to release a third xbox within three years of releasing the second one in 05 because Sony and Nintendo may be geared towards new gameplay input devices like cameras and gyration being packaged in with their consoles as standards giving them more dimensions of control than MS's system causing the nextbox to be as obsolete as the xbox the day Revolution and PS3 hit. MS can't get away with releasing three consoles in such a short period of time by 05 (two of which have already done nothing but push Sega out of the hardware market, cost MS money, and come in fourth and second) and then get involved in a fourth one only three or less years later.
