A friend of mine told me to get Firefox because my computer is messing up.  But, Firefox 1.0 doesn't give you much.  Is there anything better?

There's Opera and KMelon. If you're looking for somethig very lightweight, there's a port of Dillo, though I'm guessing it will be extremely unstable. I haven't used Windows for a long time, so I couldn't recommend one over the other, but my best advice is to use anything but IE.

What do you mean "doesn't give me much"?  I personally find Firefox to be the best thing to ever happen to my PC.  There are a ton of extensions, many of which are extremely useful, and a lot just for fun.  For example, right now I can highlight a a plain text url (not hyperlinked) and drag it to an open spot on my screen to open it in a new tab (you know about tabs, right?  If not, try middle clicking a link or right clicking and selecting "open in new tab").  Or, I can drag some text to an open spot on my screen and it'll automatically google it in a new tab.  OR, I can right click a highlighted word and dictionary.com-it in a new tab.  I've also got "adblock" which allows me to block certain ads that the automatic pop-up blocker can't catch (flash ads, for example)

So yeah, there's plenty you can do.  But of course, like Callian said, anything but IE will do.

I really like Firefox. Once I tried it, it did feel like "everything seems a little bit off", but after using it for like a month or something, if felt completely normal. When I open up IE everything "feels a little off" now. It's just that they're both different. Actually, I seem to remember getting that same feeling once after IE had a large update.

Really, what "more" does Microsoft give you? I can't actually think of a single useful thing. And the pop-up blocking and "tabs" of Firefox are great.

If you want my advice, get Firefox and use it as your "secondary" browser. Just open it deliberately every now and then. After a month you'll get used to it, and then you can ask yourself if there's any reason for you to not make it your primary browser.

One of my brothers got hit with spyware. For no particular reason. He wasn't surfing for pron or anything (it was car stuff). Just random dumb luck. While we were cleaning up the computer, I pointed out that I was (mostly) immune to that "dumb luck" because of Firefox. All of my brothers tried using it (because cleaning up the computer was a pain in the ass), and today they all pretty much say "Why the hell was I ever using Internet Explorer?"

Even if Firefox doesn't look or feel too different, it is. It is close to being completely standards compliant, and generally is more secure than IE.

Most Windows machines, even those which are fully patched and firewalled, will have some malware. The best spyware detectors will only remove about 80% of it, so if you're using Windows, you're probably sending out either spam or your personal informaton.

Yeah the Kiwi knows what he's talking about. Your only hope of salvation is actually destroying your computer and buying a Macintosh. Oh yeah would you guys belive me if I said that Internet Explorer was worse on mac? It's true! So everyone just uses Safari or Firefox.

Doesn't give you much?  I'm so confused...

There is absolutely no real reason anyone can give to NOT use firefox.

Eh? From what I heard the Mac IE version is vastly superior to the Windows one, supporting stuff like tabbed browsing.

I'm still using Opera, I prefer the interface.

Mac IE is absolute crap.  It does have more silly browsing preferences but its age causes it to break under a lot of the new web development techniques.  Firefox on mac is also suprisingly lacking.  I highly suggest checking out Mozilla's Camino beta if you are using a Mac.

I take it back, Firefox is great.  I've been using it for a few days and it's been working much, much better than IE.  Yes, the tabs are nice, and the bookmark bar is a great tool.  Thanks for all of your help.

IE is like running around a dark alley with no pants so Firefox is a godsend. I still am trying to get myself used to all the features like flipping between tabs, or remembering to use the "mouse gesture" functions; you can hold right-click and jab the mouse left or right to go back or forward. Adblock can take out the majority of banner ads that you'll ever see

And if Noble~Feather is reading this I have a suggestion for getting onto the G4 forums, via a Firefox extension called Bug-Me-Not

PaleZero is absolutely right about Camino.  It's faster than Firefox but doesn't have extensions.  I use Firefox primarily because I have a stalker who is also a Firefox fanatic and would cause me great harm if he were lurking at my window and saw another browser in use.

When has IE ever had a "large update"?

I use both Opera and Firefox (Opera at work, Firefox at home).  The only thing I like about Opera (over Firefox, that is) is that it lets you organize tabs.  Is there an add-on that will let me do this with Firefox?

Ummm... I think it was when I jumped from version 3.0 to 5.0, or something like that.

It goes back to the previous page, right?  It's kinda neat, but I have a 4 button mouse.  Two of the buttons are where my thumb rests, and I have one designated as "back" and one as "forward".  Neat though.

Yeah, me too but I think the RMB-LMB combos are more comfortable because you're not pushing against the side of the mouse.
