Castlevania DS!
« on: January 27, 2005, 04:21:37 PM »
After seeing lots of new screenshots and the AWESOME new gameplay videos I am very impressed with how this game is turning out! I haven't played a Castlevania game before, but this really makes me want to start getting into the series so I can get this when it comes out.

This is one of the best looking games i've ever seen, I love the awesome 2D.

Yeah, me too. I've seen the 1min 30sec vid at IGN, man it runs smooth like butter. I dunno why Craig compares it as GBA style Graphics when that's far from the truth. It's better than SOTN, But I wonder if Alcuard will be playable.

IGN want an inferior 3D Castlevania, because they're too cool for 2D.

Look at what Konomi's done in a few months.

Now imagine what Intelligent Systems (aka 2D gods) will be able to do with .... Metroid.... I just hope they actually pay attention to Advance Wars (DS Wars...) graphics... I'm not saying make it 3D cause well... DS can't do high poly.. But better than first-gen GBA would be nice. Hybrid 2d 3d would rock... Total Annihilation on PC proved the power of hybrid 2D/3D graphics in top down Strategy games...

Yes I do. Badly.

At first I was disappointed, because I wanted a 3D CV, because of the overwhelming abundance of 2D titles on the DS. Then I remembered all 3D Castlevanias SUCK. Or at least 3D with 2D backgrounds.

But NOW, this is realy staring to interest me! ... Maybe a killer-app, anyone? DS needs one badly. =P

"IGN want an inferior 3D Castlevania, because they're too cool for 2D."

And then when the 3D Castlevania came out they would claim it sucks and would work better in 2D.

They also want Metroid Prime to control like an FPS yet they don't like Metroid Prime Hunters.  Once the gaming media decides to hate on something nothing short of Resident Evil 4 gets them to shut up.

Oh and this new Castlevania looks AWESOME!  This could be my DS killer app.  It's a shame that a third party manages to get me interested in the DS instead of Nintendo themselves.  I think the important difference is here Konami just wants to make a great game for the DS while Nintendo wants to sell the DS concept.  Konami's using the old model for game design while Nintendo's trying to reinvent the wheel.  Maybe Nintendo should reconsider their "new types of games" concept because this tried-and-true style game looks to run circles around any of the gimmick games Nintendo has been making for the DS.

I guess.

Regardless, though, I think we can all agree that this game is going to be amazing. Especially if we've played the GBA Castlevanias.

I think it's funny that Konami handed out (and most of the media posted) shots that were twice the resolution of the DS, making the game look nasty of course.  See our screens which have been resized to their native proportions.

I kind of like the double/quadruple sized pics, because you can comforably see every little detail. But to the average gamer, it's gonna look "blocky" (which it isn't). If you resize them, people just think it looks "small" (which, of course, it is).

BTW, a simple "nearest neighbor" Photoshop resize of the GameSpot pics results in images that are a lot cleaner and sharper than PGC's ones. I think something probably got mixed up in PGC's resizing.

Here's some examples.

You're right.  Our correspondent had a broken CD drive, so I had to find the pics online.  It looks like the place I got them from already compressed them somewhat.  If I have time, I might use GameSpot's images to replace the ones I have up now.

Oh and this castlevania game made me realize a 2d fighter on the ds would look really really good.  Im starting to get excited for the DS(finally).

That's funny, Ian.  I thought you hated redundant franchise sequels at the expense of new ideas.

"That's funny, Ian. I thought you hated redundant franchise sequels at the expense of new ideas."

Well I don't really consider this a redundant sequel.  It has some new ideas in it.  Although the GBA Castlevania games were similar they all had a uniqueness to them that made owning all three of them worthwhile.  That's different then something like Mario Party where if you've played one you've played them all.  The main thing however is that it's not just changing for the sake of change.  I'd rather have something that's a little more familiar but just nails it perfectly then a game that tries something totally new for the sake of doing something new and ends up being shallow and gimmicky.  Nintendo's whole approach to the DS so far seems to be that they thought of these new hardware ideas but had no solid game ideas to make them with.  So now they're just trying to find excuses to work these new features into their existing franchises and so far they haven't shown me something that suggests that these new DS features are useful or worthwhile.

Innovation should be natural and should improve.  Nintendo right now wants to change the traditional gaming model to something that they have not demonstrated to be better.  And it's not very natural as Nintendo has struggled to adapt to it and made a very deliberate change for the sake of change.  Metroid Prime uses the "old" model for games and it's a millions times more innovative than Metroid Prime Hunters which is just a generic FPS with a "new" but largely inferior way to aim and move.

I just think there's still plenty of room to innovate using the existing game design model and Nintendo is going in the wrong direction by trying to use a new model that they so far have no solid ideas for.

Yeah it's a "generic FPS" compared to say, PC and console games. Compare it to handheld games and it's blows every attempt at the genre away... The only handheld FPS even playable is on n-gage, and Hunters blows it away.

So tell me Ian, what would be a good control scheme for hunters? Using the buttons? Because that's in there, you know.

I don't get how anybody can complain about Hunters. What are you comparing it to?
