If I was the head of a third party publisher and I asked Sony for sales figures and they gave me shipped figures I'd send them a reply asking for USEFUL data.

And Sony would tell you to go elsewhere because they are SONY and they don't need your games because the Playstation sells without games!

And the thing is, when I went to buy my DS Lite at Virgin the other day (cuz Best Buy and Circuit City were sold out, and I don't buy games from vg outlets, and the TRU closed a year ago), the UMD movie section was double the size of the DS game section; no joke. The Sony image is still very powerful, methinks.

Were the UMD movies NEW releases? Cause they could just be trying to push out old inventory.

As far as I can tell in the Bay Area and Sacramento area, the only Virgin store is in San Francisco.  Not a great retail "chain" for market representation.

Actually, there should be a Virgin store next the The Arden Mall.  Maybe it has closed down already?  I haven't been tere for a while.

Yeah, Wally World is the best example to look at here and they announced that they were tossing/liquidating all of their UMD movie section recently because the sales were just so damn poor.

Every wal-mart I go to always has the UMD movies packed to the very edge of the shelf. The DS games are clearly experiencing sales because I can see that the shelves need to be restocked in some cases. UMD movies have ALWAYS been packed to the brim, indicating that either the wal-mart clerks take extra care to stock the UMD section or that the UMD movies aren't selling at all.

My local Walmart here in Georgia has liquidated them wholesale.  I cannot find UMD movies in the section that they were in last (behind the Latin albums in the far end) nor can I find any UMDs elsewhere in the store.  They are gone.  Furthermore, the PSP GAMES are in some sort of side shelf, away from the regular games display.  DS games are next to GBA games, and are experiencing the brisk sales Smash Brother describes.  some gone, some games with only one copy left.

Just imagine what DS sales (both games and systems) would be like if it wasn't crammed in the corner at most stores, while PSP is out in the open with alot of retail space.

Yeah they closed that store down about a year ago.  It's still just empty space though I think they may have started construction on something there now.

For all the those curious about gaming sales, here is a *work in progress* that will eventually cover everything from NES to PS3 hardware and software

VGCharts.org

edit: errors are to be found and hopefully to be fixed.
#'s are a collaboration of information from the GAF informed and will probably end-up being the most accumulated mass of #'s that we will have access to publicly in simplified form.

Hmm, on that site it says the total PSP hardware sold worldwide is 17 million whereas the DS is 16.93 million, which is way off.. maybe they use Sony's "shipped" numbers.

Now that's interesting.  Nintendo Pretty much had May in that.  The other list you look at at the top you see a good amount of Sony and the occacional XBox game and some Nintendo.  Before you get half way through you start seeing nothing but Nintendo.  Dang.  No wonder there profitable.  That's the American chart too.

Dang.  According to the VGCharts.org Pokemon Red/Blue/Green sold 10,224,500 in Japan.  Now lets say everyone bought all three so individually thats 3,408,166 copies sold in Japan alone per version.  That puts it just below Super Mario World and above Final Fantasy VII.
Also after splitting all those up it reveals that Tetris for the GB at    4,221,500 is the best selling game in Japan of all time.  If you think that's inflated just consider that Super Mario Land is right under it.  That's not what I expected.

It doesn't count NES games.. Super Mario Bros would probably be the best selling game of all time, followed by Super Mario Bros 3. After all, SMB is the highest selling game ever, and SMB3 is the highest selling standalone game ever (not bundled).

SMB wasn't actually sold to most people, it was included for free for with the NES. I'm sure if you wanted to count the most owned gamed ever that would definately be SMB on NES, but as far as sold, I'm not so sure.

Number for number they are stolen off of Kaz's E3 PSP Hardware Shipments slide.

Edit: Or at least, they match the video I have of Kaz lecturing us.

Edit2: Also the page does say that it is shippments and not sales. I just noticed that. We certainly know who's stock is selling more though
