Automatically changing words to insults...
« on: December 26, 2004, 05:09:55 PM »
What's up with ki-ddy becoming tiku tiku tiku!  and stuff like M $ becoming my post is a train wreck ? This is something I'd expect of a visitor insulting site like IGN, not PGC. I understand there are idiotic posters, but ki-ddy is especially a word that has a real meaning. It IS an issue. Look at the public perception of the GCN. M $ is just a simple thing a lot of people use against Microsoft for their overall company, not a bashing technique against the XBOX.

PGC is usually a very friendly site, one for the fans. But sometimes these forums feel like they're here so the moderators can play with the users. I get you want a nice, clean forum, but at what cost? A fight can be locked...

Everytime one of those words came up (along with a number of others) there was a problem.  Sometimes it was a fight, or in the case of TIKU TIKU ^_^ it was just the same old complaints and same old arguments all over again.  We were all sick of it.

Since those words were banned there have been no complaints of  Wind Waker's art style or how the m3Ga+0/\/ is still coming.

Think it has anything to do with the fact Wind Waker came out two years ago or Mega-ton was debuffed one year ago?

The words aren't really 'banned' per se, I mean, you can still beat those dead horses if you want if you untick the emoticon box, but, yeah, tiku tiku tiku

This is getting out of hand. Blocking perfectly acceptable words is already too much (Was this site handed over to the chinese government or what?) but the collateral damage is completely unacceptable. Try writing "Competition". Contains the word "petition", doesn't it? Now guess what, petition is "defenestration " in PGC newspeak. I don't need to explain the result, do I? Aliasing M$ to MS might make more sense than changing it to "my post is a trainwreck" and nobody knows what the hell is going on. Calling people immature over "kiddy" remarks is kinda hypocritical when you're immature enough to deface their posts if they talk about a subject you don't like. This board is supposed to be a few levels above GameFAQs, if it wasn't there'd be no reason for its existence.

Besides, this forum has a swearword filter, use that instead of abusing the emoticon system if you need to censor stuff. At least people will get told about their mistakes BEFORE the post is registered.

My GOD.  These sorts of things are what make this board more fun.  I can't even begin to explain how silly it is to take an internet forum so god damn seriously.

When you wrote comdefenestration I laughed out loud.  I was not laughing at how stupid i thought you were...i was laughing at the situation... it lightens the mood.

You learn that fire is painful through actually experiencing it...I was sick of seeing words connotating a childish game and it gives a sense of light humor in a time of "DOOM AND GLOOM"...I say keep it...

I'm going to have to agree with KDR on this one.  Humor has its place, but when you can't even say competition or refute someone who says "GameCube is tH3 Kiddie", without checking "Do not parse Emoticons" something is wrong.  Have a little more faith in the PGC community.

I tried to use C-elda in a "ironic" manner the other day, and was a little surprised at the results.

However, I found a with a little creative typing I could get my point across.

I admit, I was a little put off at first, and was actually quite miffed that I couldn't just say the word...but it is a little humourous, and I wouldn't have minded as much had someone told me about it beforehand.

But...not a problem.  I especially like the new one for boy-cott.

KDR does have a point, but does anybody see what the modding of the words actually has done?  The conversations that needed to use those words have died off in a hurry.  It is actually refreshing to see intelligent topics, with intelligent responses... That is, until somebody says my post is a train wreck.  I like the changing of words, especially ones regarding EA.  Speaking of which...

Oh, regarding the use of the censorship tool: We don't want to block these words; we just want people to avoid using them, and this is a fun way of exaggerating foolishness.  If you want to check the box, you'll get your message across just fine.

How about censoring "Revolution"?  We need to live in the now.  Forget the future.
