I have played the PSP
« on: December 26, 2004, 11:24:09 AM »
Hey guys, my name is Jeff. I've been a planetgamecube visitor since it was called opperationN2000. I am what people call a Nintendo Fanboy. I work at an EB Games in New Jersey and recently a guy walked in with an imported PSP. Me having the DS and not caring too much for Sony ( though i do own an Xbox and a very dusty ps2) i was ready to pick out many things that were wrong with the system. Well i gotta tell u guys. I was kinda impressed with it. The first thing i noticed was its screen. Its really cool. Its bright, very clear, sharp and very big. I was watching the guy play Vampire Chronicles i think it was called and then he allowed me to play it. I didnt care for the game too much and just wanted to play it to try out the system. As i held it the first thing i felt was how fragile it seemed to be. The directional pad seemed a little stiff and the buttons didnt really haver a good feel for them either. Then I went over to try out the little analog nub on the lower left side of the system. Now i have to say it was real comfortable and in fact in a better position than the ps2 analog which i dont care for at all. The only problem i had with it was its size. It was really small and i could imagine that if i was too rough which games like smash bros can be, it would break off.
I handed off the PSP to my co-worker and started talkin about some of the details of the system. He seemed pretty pleased with the batter life but also mentions that he did buy an extra battery just in case. The batteries are very small so it didnt seem to be an inconvience for him. The one thing that impressed me most was its wi-fi abilities. Right out of the box he was connected to his wireless router and started playing with people from Japan. I cant speak for anyone but myself but I have to say this is real exciting. I think online gaming is the furture. Its amazing that a launch title had actually used the function and it performed so well for him. He claimed that he had no lag at all.
We talked some more and he handed me the system with Luminees ( i think thats how its spelled) I wasnt too impress about the PSP prior to that but after playing that game i was blown away. I can only describe it as a futuristic Tetris. It is that game that can be played on the go. But it is also a fun and very good looking game. It uses the screen to perfection. It changes colors and has fantastic music putting the systems speakers to very good use. The speakers sounded so-so with Vampire Chronicles but I was amazed with the sound from those speakers.
I played some more and got to look at the value pack he got. The little case they gave him was a crap and couldnt protect it from anything. I also tried to put the PSP in my pocket but since i had dress pants on, it wouldnt fit. It was a little too long.
I have to apologize for the length of the experience but i had lots to say. Forgive me on the grammar mistakes, i am a lazy typer. BUt overall the audience that Sony is trying to get is not Nintendo's fan base. They want to get the same people that they got with the playstation. They also want the 20 something who has thousands of mp3 and loves movies and travels. It really is a great traveling companion. With its connectivity to computers, all you have to do is just plug the USB port in and put any movies or songs on the system. Now heres a big problem. The memory stick. The one offered in the bundle pack was way too small for anything. it was 32 mb. Now i know there are larger ones but I think they are pretty expensive. Again though the crowd i think they are shooting for will get it. Sorry for the lack of structure with this in my final thoughts i Do think Nintendo has a little something to worry about because of the public perception. When you compare the 2 the PSP is for adults and even though the DS is for an older audience its not as mature as the PSP appeal. This will hurt Nintendo in a small way. Again though it all comes down to the games and for both companies I think both havent shown too much in that dept. If anyone has questions or comments Id love to hear what some of you have to say. Thanks guys

Nice impressions, but I have a few minor corrections to your post.

1. The 32MB MS Duo that comes in the value pack is great - if all you're going to do is save games. I used mine for my initial game saves and testing out the MP3 playback, then got a 512MB. 32MB is too small for movies or music, but more than enough for a ton of game saves. (Heck, it's 4 times bigger than a standard PS2 memory card, and the PSP game saves - on average - are smaller than the save files for PS2 games.)

2. The game you liked was Lumines (only one "e"), and it's a work of genius. It's from the same guy who did Rez on the DC and PS2. He's got one called Meteos coming out for the DS and that one looks great too.

3. You can't just get online and game right out of the box. No games support direct connections over the internet yet, so the guy must've been using Xlink Kai or some other tunneling program.

Despite what some people might think, the market is plenty big enough for both the DS and the PSP. I'm looking forward to the "battle" anyways, as I hope it'll motivate developers to push both systems as far as they can.

Hey thanks for the reply. Your right about the memory stick. The only thing i think is that the audience that they are trying to attract, i think that they will want them to use all of its functions. As far as the network thing is concerned, I really have no clue if he used anything. Yes Lumines is an amazing game and because of it i will be picking up a PSP. I think the market is big enough for both only because they both are two very different machines. There is a true focus of games on the DS while I think the PSP is pushing multiple ways to use it.

Fix your avatar, then talk to him about his spacing.

If you take a closer look, his post does have paragraphs, they're just not double-spaced.

it's not that they aren't double-spaced, they're just not indented

Try making an internet forum indent your paragraphs without using UML (which most people don't know or care about).

I hate to ask the dumb question but it begs for it anyway: Is it region free? I have to give it up to the really, really, early adopters for giving the PSP a whirl, but it'd be a shame if it wasn't the case.

yeah, psp is region free.   and Dynasty warriors+lumines makes the early adoption worth it. I just hope that I find more than 2 games worth playing.

Games are region free, movies not.
