is gamecube for me?
« on: December 03, 2004, 10:00:18 AM »
Hey gang, an EB game store opened up next to my office.  I'ts been years since I had played my ps (first generation) and have always enjoyed gaming..So I stop in and talk to the guy, says that he has the gamecube on sale for $99 including mario kart.  Says that its (in his opinion) the best game currently available for the gamecube..also has a pkg which includes super monkey ball an extra control pad, 2 extention cables, a memory card and some other stuff for $149.

My question is, Im almost 40 years old and I've always heard that the Nintendo systems are mostly oriented towards youngsters.  Do you think I would be better off with the Playstation?  The salesman says the xbox is the worst of the bunch and that a lot of the games that are available on the ps are also available for the gamecube...Any advice would sure be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

It's only $99 now with the Mario Kart and 2 controllers bundle (actual price would be $170ish). Not too many games on the PS2 are on the Cube, and moreso vice versa. I could go on and on, but just check this out: http://www.planetgamecube.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=1372

If you just enjoy games and want to have fun, then you can pretty much be happy with any system if you pick games carefully.

Maybe this belongs in the "What game should I get?" thread, but I'm in a persuading mood, so I'm going to respond anyway.

My objective opinion is: it depends on what you're looking for.  If you like RPGs (and have the time to play them, that's my problem) Playstation 2 is the best.  If you like first-person shooters and/or online games, Xbox is probably your best bet (actually, a PC would probably be even better, but I just like playing on consoles more.)  Nintendo has the best party games, and usually the best one-player adventure-type games.

Now, for my slightly biased opinion:  Nintendo makes the best games.  The company isn't known for it's adult-oriented titles, but it does have them (see Metroid Prime and Eternal Darkness).  More importantly, Nintendo's other games are all excellent.  The Mario series isn't the most macho or cool game series around, but the games are all top-quality.  They're challenging enough and fun enough to keep players of any age entertained.  This goes for practically every Nintendo series out there: Pikmin, F-Zero, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros., and so on.  The GameCube doesn't have the most support from third-party studios like Capcom, Konami and Electronic Arts, but it still has a reasonable selection, and I think Nintendo more than makes up for it with it's own quality games.

Finally, since you're still playing your PS1, I assume you want to get a good value for your money, and you won't find a much better deal than the GameCube right now.  I imagine you've already seen how the prices compare.  The only thing PS2 is giving you for the extra $80 (or whatever it is now - you have to excuse me, I'm not totally up to date on Sony's pricing) is DVD playback.  GameCube is slightly more powerful and a lot cheaper.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Hey gang, thanks for the advice..I've been out of the loop for too long I guess...

Thats kind of what the salesman said...ps has the most 3rd party support but almost every game that nintendo produces is good vs about 70% for sony (not counting 3rd party games).

Another plus for the nintendo is you can actually get them.  The salesman says that they just came out with an updated ps2 and he just got 4 of them in and there is a waiting list about 40 people long...basically the people that will buy the biggest bundle of accsy's gets the ps2..

Ok, thanks again for the advice.

Well I don't know if you'll like a Cube but if you get that deal check if the the controller and memory card are Nintendo's own brand.  Third party hardware is usually crap.  And the extention cables are worthless since you can buy superior wireless controllers.

I suggest you go to GameRankings.com and search for the top ten Cube games made by Nintendo.  Read some of the reviews and decide if enough of those titles interest you to buy one.  Still for only $100 you should be able to find something worthwhile.

I love trying to convince people to buy Nintendo products.  I've sold at least one Gamecube so far with my convincing, let's see if I can do it again.

Like couchmonkey said, RPGs are very present on the Playstation.  It has more than you could ever play, but I'm guessing that you're more interested in playing game than trying your hands at an RPG, which are generally very long and story oriented.  Nintendo puts gameplay first, following it with story, graphics, and other details (which are usually top-notch, regardless).
Xbox has more first person shooters than you could ever play.  You could play most of its quality games on the computer, but it has got some fun games.  Not my taste, definitely, and the selection of good games isn't too diverse.  If you're into war games or first person shooter games and don't like computer gaming, you're probably best fit for Xbox.

However, Nintendo.
In my opinion, Nintendo has by far the highest quality games.  True, most of them are appropriate for all audiences, but they are not exclusively for children.  Mario is tons of fun for anyone who plays it, games like Pikmin are fun and challenging, and party games like Mario Kart and Super Smash Brothers Melee are a blast.  My friends, even my Xbox ownin' friend and my Final Fantasy fan friend, love SSBM, and everything my friend murk and I have on our Gamecubes.  It's a ton of fun to play all the games with people you know, very laid back, fun, and cool.
What I enjoy most about Nintendo, though, is the one player experience.  I just finished playing Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and it, like the first, is an excellent, challenging, involving game.  Even my roommate, who is a very casual gamer, got sucked into it, saying "Uh oh, I'm saving a game.  This can't be a good sign."
Other great one player games are Pikmin 2 (can't speak for this first, but the sequel is amazing), which is an interesting strategy/adventure game, Wind Waker, a great adventure game with stylistic graphics (very colorful and bright, but impressive, so long as one is not shallow about that sort of thing), and F-Zero GX, an intense, futuristic racing game (has multiplayer, but the single player is much more fun and challenging).
Many other games, too, but I thought that was a pretty diverse selection, deciding between three games.
Fun party games: Super Smash Brothers Melee (fun to play, and it can get very deep in terms of gameplay mechanics), Mario Kart (great, fun racing), Super Monkey Ball 2 (have only played the first, which was awesome, but I hear this is even better.  Monkeys in plastic balls, more fun than it sounds, I promise), and you might want to check out the upcoming Mario Party 6.  Four was below the usual standard by quite a lot (though my one friend can never stop playing it whenever we get together.  Different strokes for different folks, I guess), and five was good, but this one looks like it has promise.  Pikmin 2 is two player, but my friend and I were laughing hysterically while playing it, lots of fun.
Those are all Nintendo games (excluding Monkey Ball, which is Sega), or Nintendo franchises made by other companies with Nintendo supervising (F-Zero GX was also Sega).  Good third party games are on the gamecube, though, like Viewtiful Joe (the sequel came out recently, actually) by Capcom.  I'm not too aware of all of them, though, since I usually buy games more closely affiliated with Nintendo, and that takes all my money.
Nintendo is strongly oriented toward a broad fanbase, including children and adults, for the most part.  The games are definitely fun, no doubt about that, and any tiku tiku tiku!  nonsense you hear is mainstream media talking (the same media which makes Britney Spears and bad rappers top the charts, musically.  The media is not to be trusted, especially with video games), and I expect you're mature enough to ignore the rumors that Gamecube undermines your manliness.  Quite the opposite, really

Hope you make the right choice, and good work, doing research.  That's always admirable.

Thanks again for the replies, I guess for the money I can't go wrong with the gamecube...that $149 deal seems reasonable.  I have to verify that the deal also includes mario kart along with super monkey ball..thanks again..

That salesman wasn't a very good salesman imo.
I have all 3 systems and I play the Xbox the most and the Gamecube almost as much (simply because I have more Xbox games and my Xbox is chipped so I can play emulators (all old systems), movies, etc). It depends on what games you like. Gamecube has quality but no quantity. Xbox has quality and quantity (although not as much as PS2 in the quantity department) but lacks the charm of the Nintendo characters. To be honest I'd go with Xbox. The only reason I bought a Gamecube was really for Zelda and maybe Metroid.

I'll add my 2 cents along with everyone else: go for it. You won't look back, seriously. There's enough great games on the 'cube for you to have years of enjoyment. Plus, if you live with people, multiplayer "Super Monkey Ball" and "Mario Kart" will go down an absolute treat.

By the way, if the $149 package doesn't include "Mario Kart", definitely go for the $99 package with "Mario Kart" included instead. And if they have "Eternal Darkness" on the cheap, you can't go wrong picking it up too.

Well, whether the GC is the right choice for you depends on your preferences.
Generally, the GC offers games that differ greatly from what you might know from the PC. The system is nice, the interface good and things like loading times are rare and short. The GC's strength is party games. Assuming your party is local, of course. It has a range of genres but most genres don't have very many different games in them on the Cube. There are no discussions which game is the best FPS, fighting game or shmup. Innovation, while not that rare, isn't exactly prevalent on the Cube, most games are still pretty similar to what you already know and experimental games are few and far in between.
If you value online gaming much, the XBox will be your best choice. While its genre focus is nearly the same as the PC it has the best online support. If you already have a PC and are happy with that, I'd reccomend you skip the XBox and go for another console because the XBox and PC have very similar games selections. Also, if your interest lies mostly in games that are available on multiple platforms you should go with the XBox since its HDD and x86 architecture make it the best when it comes to multiplatform games.
If you want a huge selection of games from pretty much every genre and lots of experimental games, get the PS2. It has the most games, that is a mathematical fact. As a result, it has the most good games, as well. Unfortunately the hardware itself has little durability and quite a few annoyances (dual shock 2 controller...). It has lots of great games in the bargain bin so you can get quite a mileage from the thing. I got three great games for the price of one new one for my PS2. I heard there's a shortage of PS2s in the US, though.

PS2 is the clear winner.  If you're 40, Xbox or PS2 is where it's at.  I'm 26 and the only reason I bought a GC was for the major franchise releases of my old favorites - Zelda, Metroid, Mario bro's, Kart, etc.  The GC doesn't have a huge selection of games.  PS2 is the king of the console industry, it's a no brainer despite what you may read here.    Not to mention the amount of AAA games for the PS2 and its huge library of cheap players choice games that are 30 bucks or less will definitely be a huge draw if you are the type of person that buys games.

All of the GC games were not as good as their N64 counterparts this era, hence you see games like Super mario sunshine getting less then a 9 in many reviews, when really the game was pretty awful.  The original mario was not so "kid oriented" even in mario 64, it had cartoony graphics but you could still enjoy it without wanting to toss your cookies at the "Kidd-ie like" aspects they put into Super Mario Sunshine.

Nintendo's library is pretty small, and even the good 1st party games are not the greatest.  There are some gems but theres more to experience on the PS2 and Xbox.

It would help immensely if you told us what kinds of games you like and are interested in, and the the types of games you hate, etc.  Whether you are an action gamer,  FPS,  RPG buff, etc.

My question is, Im almost 40 years old and I've always heard that the Nintendo systems are mostly oriented towards youngsters.

This is certainly the perception among the general public, but most people here would disagree very much. The PS2 and XBox have more very violent games like the Grand Theft Auto series... but they appeal mainly to male teenagers hooked up on testosterone. Games like the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker or Super Mario Sunshine on the Cube look like they're made for children, but I'd say they're actually better games than most. Of course, I only own a Gamecube, so I'm pretty biased.

I'd recommend the Gamecube, but I recommend that to everyone Unless you're a hardcore gamer, it's not likely you'll run out of good games to play, expecially this far through the generation. Games like Pikmin, Soul Caliber 2, Super Smash Bros: Melee, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Metroid Prime are all 'players choice' titles, so they're cheap as well (I think it's $20 in the USA.)

People say that the PS2 and Xbox have more games.  And they do.  But unless you have several thousand dollars to spare and a helluva lot of time, I don't see why you need all several hundred or so games they have.  Most of which suck.
Despit their numbers, Gamecube is just as diverse, for what it has.  There's no way you need all those games.  Gamecube has more games, and more good games, than you can afford monetarily and chronologically.  Really.  A larger library means nothing, just more crap.
You can buy one of the other two systems if you want, they're good (just not as good, in my opinion), but that's a poor reason against Gamecube.

There are tonnes of oldschool SNES franchises that have since moved to PS2 only and many of us here WANTED those games and developers back on the cube but it didn't happen this generation and it probably wont happen next generation either.  You can only milk your franchises so long until the return on investment starts diminishing.  The fact that you see cash-ins by square on the Final fantasy name for a Non final fantasy game (Crystal chronicles) and other games that are "cash ins" that were not what you expected is a huge let-down and is definitely not good for the gamecube.  Square-Enix should have ported a REAL final fantasy game instead of the trash we get that was FF Crystal chronicles.

Well it really doesn't sound like desmoface is going face a game shortage.   Most likely he'll only play a couple of games so the GC should fare well enough for that.

Best idea for now would either get unlimited renting (blockbuster has a freedom game pass) or head on over to the bargin bin/player choice titles to start you off.

Hostile Creation: True but in most cases the set of good games isn't identical to the set of games you'd buy. Just because, say, NFSU2 is a good game doesn't mean I'm interested in it. The more specific a person's interests the smaller the set of games that appeal to them. Thing is even if you have fifty games worth buying on a system, if only three of those appeal to you that means there's too few games for you on the system. More good games = more games that might appeal to you. Someone who only plays FPS games won't be happy with the GC because out of the hundreds of games available only a few are good FPS games. ranted, that's extreme but it happens.

I agree completely, but I think that one should research what you're interested in, depending on your taste, and buy accordingly.  I think the Gamecube has enough games to keep most anyone satisfied, unless you're an FPS, sports, or RPG fanatic.  It depends, but for a casual gamer with broad taste, a Gamecube is nice choice.

It isn't neccesarily for youngsters, in fact there are some pretty graphic titles out there, or ones that might be too hard for kids. It is true that alot of the childrens games out there are for GC though. I would get a GC all the same, but there is nothign wrong with going with an Xbox or PS2.
