Nintendo Releases tons of Video
« on: November 03, 2004, 06:20:28 PM »
Seriously, there's video of over FIFTY games!

Nintendo recently started their Touch! Tour event in Japan, and today released on the internet many videos that are airing at the event. There are seven videos, showcasing well over 30 different games across the company's three platforms (or pillars, if you like it that way). Highlights of the videos include updated looks at Fire Emblem GC, Star Fox Assault (newly titled... again), Geist, Odama, and other titles we haven't heard much of anything from since E3.

These three titles in particular are looking a good deal better. Star Fox Assault looks absolutely stunning in single player. Fire Emblem is looking much improved from it’s early video at E3, and Geist appears to be taking an even more cinematic feel and also supports slightly improved graphics. nSpace has also removed the game’s obnoxiously fluorescent HUD colors, thankfully. Odama, the quirky military pinball game from Yoot Saito, is looking even more insane than before.

On the DS front, we get our first glimpse of Touch! Kirby, a game in which Kirby appears to be constantly rolling, and the player must use a “magic paintbrush” to form bridges and platforms that Kirby can use to progress through the levels. While it seems similar to Yoshi’s Touch and Go, Kirby plays much faster and is much more action orientated than Yoshi and Baby Mario’s DS outing. The DS video also shows an updated version of Animal Crossing DS, which has more of a 3D perspective now, with a moving camera.

As for Game Boy Advance games, one of the videos contains various commercials for upcoming games, and the other two are full on game footage. Most of the footage has already been seen, or is of games only releasing in Japan. There are a few exceptions, as we get our first glimpse of Mario Party Advance, and our first video glimpse of Yoshi’s Universal Gravitation (a platforming game staring Yoshi that utilizes the rotational sensor game cart).

Below is a list of links to all the videos available. They play through a Macromedia Flash plug-in, and take a fair amount of time to load even on a decent connection speed:

Am I the only one excited for Nintendo DS? The games are looking quite stunning, especially those that appear to use the unique features fo the Nintendo (such as the Kirby game). I'm not sure what people were saying when they stated Nintendo nor other developers were taking creative advantage of the DS, because I definately see it in those videos!

God Almighty, why must you be so cruel?!  The site is down!

Okay, I've seen all the Gamecube ones now, and the DS and Gameboys are loading.  What do I have to say?
Holy freaking crap.  Wow.  Jesus.  Wow.
That, and Japanese people are crazy.  That Mario Party 6 commercial was bizarre.

My for sure list:
Metroid Prime Echoes
Fire Emblem
Star Fox Assault
Minish Cap

What I want to add to that list, and might:
Killer 7
Geist
DK Jungle Beat (whoa)
Odama (?)

Games I won't get but would like to:
Yoshi's Universal Gravitation (looks awesome, but I have a Gameboy Play, and I doubt it's compatible.

As for the DS, there is no doubt at all that I'm getting one now.

And the F-Zero commercial is funny.  And Japanese people are still crazy.

I'm glad to see more of Geist.  It's made some noticeable visual improvements since E3, plus there's new story details -- who's that little ghost girl?  is the guy some kind of test patient/prisoner/victim?

This is overwhelming.

Looks like I'm going to have to get a job to buy all these games, though.....;___;  I mean, even with Christmas and my birthday a month apart, they'll never cover even a fraction of all the games I want.

Oh hay, Mario Power Tennis comes out just days before a four-day weekend =D  JOY

Advance Wars DS has a F-117. Seems to be able to attack air and ground units. Muwhahahahah!

I want almost every single one of those games. Just watching those videos, I didn't care about anything else, I just wanted to play them, and the Nintendo DS is AMAZING, I can't wait to get my hands on what will be the best gaming system ever.

Love those F-Zero and Mario Party 6 commercials

Things just keep getting better and better for us gamers. Nintendo games rock!

I watched two of the videos, the DS video and the Gamecube 2 video.

I am really stunned by the quality of these videos and the style.  I really think NOA needs to grab these videos and air these as US commercials.  Just change the names to English so we know what games they are showing.

Some things to note.  The DS games don't look that bad.  Yes it isn't PS2 graphics, but you won't be noticing all the little details and added touches on the small screen as much and resolution isn't as big of a deal.  The games all looked sleak, incredibly innovative, and most importantly FUN.  Almost all of the games stood out as winners, but I must admit that the Kirby game looks as the best video.

I don't think Nintendo will have to worry about the PSP if they can release a steady games of innovative and uniquely fun games.  And once the DS has a userbase then developers will follow.

Second, the Gamecube games in Video 2 needs to be shown to the US.  All of them were Nintendo exclusive and had a much older feel, and felt original.  Giest seemed like it has much more promise than anyone expected.  Star Fox single player made it a must own game.  In fact, Metroid Prime 2 seemed less specacular to me compared to some of the other games in that video.

Nintendo DS is in good hands.  I still hope for either a price drop or a full game packin.  Mario 64 DS would be a great package with the system, and allow buyers to support the 3rd parties.  I hope Nintendo either does that or drops the price to about 125-135 price range.  $135 would seem to be the most beneficial.  Nintendo wouldn't lose as much, but that price difference is signifigant enough to make DS standout again.

Also for those that don't know...just change the .html at the end of the video links to .swf to see a bigger version of them...  it is slightly pixelized though...

Flash video will take over the net!

Hey Fire Emblem and Star Fox don't look like crap anymore!

Seriously though Fire Emblem looks greatly improved and could be one of the Cube's best titles.  I know this is going to please those that loved Fire Emblem for the GBA.  I think it's too late to really grab the hardcore RPG crowd but the hardcore gamers who bought a Cube as a secondary console after the price drop are going to pick this up.  I think for the Revolution NOA should release a translated compilation of the Japan only Fire Emblem games.  That's an incredibly easy title to make and it would give the Rev an RPG killer app here in North America.

Star Fox Assault also looks much better and the Arwing shots look right up my alley.  I'm still concerned about how the ground missions will play though.  I'm afraid it might turn out as a Rebel Strike where the air missions are amazing but the game is completely ruined by terrible ground missions.

Oh and Nintendogs HAS to be released here.  Those dogs are so cute.  That could be a huge seller with females and children.

Erm, the Fire Emblem series has tons of untranslated text. It's not that easy and I doubt the average guy will endorse SNES graphics on a home console. And the stereotype that Western people can't take difficult games plays a role as well. Don't take me wrong, I love to have a translated Fire Emblem compilation, but it's looking higly unrealistic. That being said, I can't wait for the ninth installment, Souen no Kiseki.

Haha, it does.  Probably because it's much less fast paced and in your face, and the fact that we already know a lot about it (whereas the others are new and surprising) helps too.
Gonna have to start saving up money for all this crap.  Jeez.

Edit: Just looked at the second video again (which had cut out on my the first time).  Chibi Robo looks. . . very interesting.  I doubt it'll be an American release, but I'd sure like to try it out.

Well they don't have to include all the titles.  Just include the first two or so and if it sells well release follow ups later.  Translating a game is still way easier than translating a game AND making it from scratch.  I agree that because of the difficulty and the graphics that the title wouldn't have tons of mainstream appeal.  But that's not the point.  The idea is to attract the hardcore RPG nuts early on as so that there is an audience on the Revolution for RPGs which gives third parties an incentive to create Revolution RPGs which fills in a huge genre gap that Nintendo has had problems with for the last two gens.  If Nintendo releases a few really hardcore games at launch (alongside a major title naturally) they can attract those types of audiences from the get go and it makes it easier to build a userbase that doesn't just buy big huge blockbuster titles.  The PS2 has successfully done this which is why obscure PS2 games can still sell alongside huge mainstream titles like Madden and GTA.

I understand your point to create more RPG support, but localizing old games won't attract a lot of people, since hardcore RPG fans are far and few here in North America. And I don't consider Fire Emblem a RPG if you compare it to others, it's more a SRPG like Disgaea, La Pucelle and that didn't do too well here compared to Final Fantasy X. SquareEnix, Atlus or whoever won't look how well it'll sell, it'll pick the largest userbase IN Japan. I personally would create a larger user base and third-party support in Japan first, since there's where most of the RPG's get developed. And worry about North America later.

Well, time to comment after actually watching the videos.

Star Fox is now only second on my "most anticipated" list, only after Baten Kaitos.  It looks absoluley amazing.

But I'm having some issues with the new Animal Crossing perspective.  See, when I first heard about animal crossing I pictured it very close to the final product, except the camera would be somewhat similar to a zoomed-out Zelda view and would rotate 360 degrees.  So when I read about the new moving camera I was stoked.  but after watching the video I'm a bit disapointed.....it's like we're tiny people  living on a basketball.  I don't like the spherical map look at all.....I imagine that it would make the town feel less like an actual town......

Whatever.  Kirby looks awesome.

Can someone tell me why the GameCube, GBA, and DS don't have those commercias in the U.S.? Even if they ported the Japanese commercias over here, they'd have better luck. Seriously, they're VERY cool. The best really I've seen in a long time. I want to buy lots of GameCube games now where before, I kind of game up on gaming altogether.
