Finding it hard to continue games....
« on: October 26, 2004, 05:40:49 PM »
I don't know if everyone finds this happens to them, but i can never pick up an unfinished game that i haven't played in a while and sit and start to play it again. I always have to start right from the beginning.

Like in Metroid Prime, i was up to the mighty Metroid Prime, i tried to beat him once got upto his second form and failed. The next day, without trying to do it again, we went on holiday for a week. I tried to play it again and i pretty much just clear forgot how to play.

This only happens with one player adventures like TLZ:WW, MGS:TT and MP and doesn't happen with mission and seperate game based games like Timesplitters 2, The Sims: BO, NBA live and Mario Sunshine i don't have any trouble with, i think because of each episode is seperate.

Does this happen to anyone else? Or am i just a complete whack job? This really annoys me because some games take a real long time to finish.

Yeah, I remember when I finally found a copy of Star Ocean 2. I played it A LOT over three days. Got to the last tower thing with the annoying elevator crap, final boss. Death. Gave up. Next day. Death. I then spent a bit of time levelling up again, go back to try again. Death.

One month later I tried again, but didn't know what the hell was going on. So I started from the beginning again. AND WON. THE EVERYTHING! Only 79 more endings to unlock.

I still have to beat quite a few games that I haven't finished yet, but I had to quit only because of me being busy or new games coming out...I really need to beat Paper Mario 2 before Mario Tennis comes out or it'll be the end... ;_;

I have the same problem particularly with long games like RPGs.  My solution: buy less games and stop buying RPGs since I never beat them anyway.  My favourite games are titles like Metroid: Zero Mission.  I love games that quickly grab me yet are short enough that I can beat them in a few weeks of playing for a few hours each day.  Say 30 hour games.  Plus considering the huge backlog of unbeaten titles I have I'm thinking of starting a strict rule where I don't buy a game until I'm done with the previous one (either beat it or give up in frustration).

When you have a full-time job you have money to buy all the games you want but no time.  So I think dicipline is the solution to any problems with completing games.

Mainly i think i loose the momentum after a while......yeah with some games i forget to save after a while or something and then turn off the game. When i turn i back on i find i have to do a whole section again and then i give up. This happend with Chrono Trigger i spent all afternoon trying to finsh a boss then turned it off without saving. I didn't want to finish it again so it reamined unfinished...........to this very day

This also happens to me. All I can say is this: trying marathons to finish games is not a good idea; you gain no enjoyment from them and by the end you never want to play the game again.

I've never had this problem, ever.  I haven't played Metroid Prime in well over several months, but I have no doubt that I could pick it up and beat old Prime on this first go-through.  Some games take a bit of adaptation to remember how to play them, Luigi's Mansion for example, but I can usually remember how to do it fairly quickly.
Dunno if this is a factor, but I play all of my games without the manual, so I learn to do everything on my own, naturally adapting to it and improving.  It sometimes hurts, since I didn't know you could hold R in Wind Waker to let the boat move slowly when the sail was down for quite a while, but for the most part I feel that it does me good.  But I'm not sure how many other people do it that way, too.  I imagine it's pretty common.
I did have some trouble when I went back to play Four Swords, but I think that was more a matter of rushing through to show someone the game.  In general, no, I don't have this problem.  S'pose I'm lucky.

The only game I started over because I forgot what happened was The Westerner. My ATI card didn't play the game anymore and I couldn't play it until I got that GeForce 6800 I'm using now.

I have a lot of trouble getting back into games I played a ton then just stopped for whatever reason.  Just too buy to play consoles as much as I'd like I suppose.  Winter break is going to be an epic time for my GCN, oh boy...  I am excited already.

That really doesn't happen to me ^_^

When I was playign OoT, I got frustrated with the water temple and stopped playing.  For a few months.  Then I picked it up and beat the temple that day.  Same thing happened with Metroid Prime, except I wasn't stuck on a boss.  I  just stopped playing it for a couple months, then picked it back up and got sucked back in.  I beat Meta Ridley a few weeks ago, and then I've stopped playing.  I know I'll pick it up again and beat it.  Same thing with the pogo stick.  I kept falling and falling, so I put it away for a month, and got it first try do not attempt to play pogo stick with your favorite videogame console

Actually, this happens with alot of games.  Happened with Super Metroid, Eternal Darkness,  BG&E, Pikmin, F-Zero, and loads of others.  I play games in spurts that last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, then I stop for usually a longer amount of time, then I play them again.  I still need to get back into: Xenogears, any FF game I've ever played yeah right, Four Swords, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Pikmin 2,  BG&E, Viewtiful Joe,  and Skies of Arcadia: Legends, and a ton more from the SNES/GBA.  I stopped playing four of those because of hard bosses, the FF ones out of sheer boredom, and some just because I started to play other games.

The only game I really can't get back into is Majora's Mask, but that's simply because I HATE being timed.  I think it has the best atmosphere out of any game I've ever played, but the time limit just ruins it for me.

Oh yeah, and here's to hoping my wait-and-see technique works with my blasted unicycle.

Plus I never finished PIkmin and never will because of TIME mmkay?

Pikmin was worse than MM with regards to time.

That's why Pikmin 2 is the wonderful.

And if you still like being timed, Challenge Mode is tearing me apart, difficulty-wise.

In the past I wouldn't hesitate to give up on a game and/or pull out a Game Genie, but not so much from the past couple gens; only a few games I dropped. As much praise as it got, I really couldn't stand much of Majora's Mask. I bought it the day it came out, and in about a week of playing it I reached Great Bay Temple and just quit out of boredom (in comparison, I beat OoT with all the hearts and items in a week). I did manage to play through the rest and finish the game last year though (Stone Tower Temple, the best part of the game by far).

Then there's other situations like Eternal Darkness. I beat the whole game, but about halfway during my second trip through I reset the game and forgot to save, meaning I would have had to start all over again from the beginning of the second quest. Never did, never played the game again. I was also quite devestated when my fully completed Pokemon Red got erased (on the day of a local tourney no less) from messing around with Missingno. I still bought Gold and beat it, but had no further desire to "catch 'em all" or even train my top six to lvl 100. Similar situation with THUG2 currently, where I spent hours completing one of the levels only to have the power go out and me lose all that progress. Not really up to doing that over again.

My gametime with VJ got killed due to boredom. BG&E I just never found the time for. The final stage on Sonic Advance kept me in a continuous loophole and I could never get out (much like bowsers castle on SMB1, another game I never beat BTW), too frustrated to continue with it. Quit on RE Remake because having never played an RE prior to that, I realized I hated it and just filed it away after about an hour. And before Prime came out I wanted to break out Super Metroid and play through  that one once more to recapture the Metroid magic (as well as beat it legit this time, since I had only done it with GG aide), but didn't get through it because Prime came out before I finished.

And no, I don't have the desire to go back and finish any of these games, except for BG&E. Also, never have I started completely over on a game because I forgot how to play. Usually if I forget, that keeps me from ever going back.
Oops pow suprise!

Yeah, having to play through something again right after I already beat it or almost beat it. . . I can hardly ever do that.  It takes effort to make myself go back and play it immediately.  Usually I'll have to go back and do something else in the game and finish that part later.  No trouble re-adapting at that point, but it takes a while to want to do it over again.

I got up to the end boss (or a boss nearly at the end) of Resident Evil Zero back in March 2003. I haven't played it since... actually I think I played it for a bit on a new file, but didn't get anywhere. Man that boss is annoying.
