Too Much Fun?
« on: October 21, 2004, 09:13:06 AM »
I think they may be all-Canadian, but Nintendo recently started some new ad campaigns with the slogan "too much fun".  Anybody seen them?  Are they being played in the U.S.?

I think Nintendo has got the right "attitude" with these commercials, although they're kind of...distasteful.  My girlfriend thinks they're irresponsible, but I found them hilarious.  It's interesting to see something controversial from Nintendo, at least...

Both ads play out like public service announcements.  In one, a couple is lamenting how their son used to be normal, but then he started hanging out with the wrong crowd, and then, one day, they overheard him talking about mushrooms.  Then the voice-over person tells us about Paper Mario (and Mario Pinball Land, in one version).

The other ad isn't even marketing a specific game or system.  In fact I saw more of the NES, Super NES and N64 than I did of the GameCube.  A homeless guy with a shopping cart full of Nintendo gear walks around trying to get electricity to play his systems, and tells us how he was an ordinary kid until he became addicted to Nintendo after playing at a friend's house one night.

Yeah, so they're not exactly sending a positive, life-affirming message about Nintendo, but I thought they were pretty funny.  I have no idea of their selling power, I think more game footage would be nice, but then again, I really have no idea how to sell stuff.
That's my opinion, not yours.

In my opinion, game footage has nothing to do with selling games to the majority of the buyers out there.  Microsoft did it soley by creating some image that still confuses the heck out of me.  Sony did it by convincing the populous that their system was a better technology...  As much as I hate to say it, but most people out there don't care about the games.

Nintendo are like the Democrats of the gaming industry. They trust people to be able to think for themselves too much.

They are pretty funny commercials.

PaleZer0: I kind of agree with you about game footage not making a lot of difference to consumers...a lot of gamers seem to believe that it's the key to selling, so I guess I was caving in to the pressure there.  I personally would like to see more game footage, though.

The homeless ad is my favourite, I like how it pays tribute to Nintendo in general, not just current systems.  I think Nintendo could benefit from playing the nostalgia card a bit more in it's marketing.  The mushroom ad is probably funnier, though.

Great observation.  And very concisely put.  I applaud you.  I always knew there was something wrong with Nintendo's approach to selling consoles, but I could never quite put my finger on it.  The marketing execs think they can sell a system based on great games alone.  While this would be true in a perfect world, we all know this world is far from perfect.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Democrats don't want people to think for themselves, they want to be able to think for you because we are too stupid to think for ourselves.

You know political comparisons are different across geographical boundaries and banned under PGC boundaries right?

I've not seen any of these ads yet.  Problem is, I don't watch tv, nor Canadian tv.

I was going to comment on the political thing, but I said, "Hey, that's against the rules so I'm not going to stretch that out any more than it needs to be."

So much for common sense.
