Sony buys MGM
« on: September 14, 2004, 09:23:31 PM »
Will end up gaining rights to make games on all their movies, and eventually will acquire rights to James Bond games, and Rocky.  You can thank Comcast.  Sony buys MGM?

I didn't think Jame Bond could be in the hands of worse publisher but I've been proven wrong.

Licenced to Kill 007.  Published by SCEA and developed by 989 Studios.  ACK!

It is possible however that Sony will still let EA make Bond games and multiplatform as well.  Didn't Sony make the Spider-man movies?  They've allowed games based on the movie to be made for the Xbox and Gamecube.

I think the greater fear is Sony owning an insanely large amount of movies and using their own selection to force their proprietary crap on the market.  UMDs could actually take off if there are enough movies in that format.

This is a rare occasion but I'd rather see EA hold on the bond license rather than SCE branch. 989  should rot case and point twisted metal 3 and 4 and every sports title they made .

EA still has james bond, and they have him for a lot of years to come.  Sony just has movie right for now.  Until EA's contract runs up sony can't make them do crap.

Oh and ubisoft has rocky for a while too.  you can however expect 989's beautiful rendition of return of the pink panther.

Yes the other companies still have the rights for awhile, as I said, "eventually will acquire."  It's pointless to rant about how bad 989 is because they're working on PS3 sports titles and PSP ones too I believe.  I doubt they would be commissioned to make a Bond game, possibly Rocky but there's not much competition there.  Sony has a slew of 2nd party developers that make great games, so they have nothing to worry about.  Also SCE Studios Santa Monica is making great strides and also expanding it's size, there was a whole article about it in a GI issue this summer.

Great.  You know what else this buyout means?  No Hobbit movie for anyone.  MGM owned the distrobution rights to it, while New Line (part of Time Warner) owned the rights to make it.  Now that they didn't win the buyout, there go nearly all chances of that movie ever being made.

Crap.

The only good one would be the last one, Everything or Nothing.

I enjoyed both Agent Under Fire, and Nightfire.  I wouldn't call them crappy, and they've got decent reviews.  Agent Under Fire was a good game for an early fps gamecube game I used to own, and Nightfire I rented, expected not much at all and enjoyed it alot.
