I just stumbled upon this at Nintendo  Now.  Sounds different than the one issued for the 64dd, I think.  Sounds really great, in fact.

Never heard of this site so I don't know how reliable this information is.  If it's true it doesn't surprise me.  Nintendo is likely going to go online next gen.  Plus these patents may be "just in case".  This does suggest a service method like Xbox Live however.  Considering Nintendo has always insisted that their online games will be free I wonder how they plan on pulling that off.

But what Team Xbox box didn't mention is that the 64DD basically made the N64 what the Xbox is today.
So it wouldn't be Nintendo following Microsoft, but instead Nintendo fully realizing what they originally tried to do.

How strangely odd...

Sony got the initial technology, a way for cheap game manufacturing and new format on which to release it, from nintendo with the snes cd unit...

Xbox's entire online appeal is a result of an idea and the groundwork nintendo originally had in the first place...

Man if ninty just stuck through with some of their visions instead of letting competition taking their ideas...

maybe THIS is why they're always so paranoid about their ideas being stolen.  They have been in the past!!

They appended new material to an old patent. They're now legally cleared to sue MS over XBox Live! as patent infringement.

Maybe you should have read the update to that patent closely instead of jumping all over me.  Hows that?

My feeling is that these patents usually mean nothing for the players.  It's just a lot of legal arse-covering on the part of big corporations.  To me this new patent stuff says that Nintendo realizes that sooner or later it's consoles will go online...which is nice, but I always made that assumption.  It's just a matter of how long we have to wait.
