Well that's a pretty crappy mock-up.  The screen doesn't even look like it's really attached to the unit.  And those buttons are all flat.  That will NOT work well for games.  You need easy to push buttons that stick out.  Place the D-pad is on a curve in the system's shape which again will not work.

I REALLY doubt the real PSP will end up looking like this.  It's probably something that some Sony guy from outside SCEA designed for the presentation so they could have something to show.  Sony is far too experienced with the gaming industry to design something so ridiculous.  If they go with this then their knowledge of the portable market is about on par with Nokia's.

I'd have to say I'm kind of surprised.  I'm starting to think its gonna be one damn cool portable gaming system................ with a 500 dollar price tag.

i think it kind of looks cool and ugly at the same time...they could make a few improvements.

it certainly doesnt look big, not at all, and if you really think that, your simply don't have a clue. knowing that the screen is 4 inches wide, the unit itslef is about 5.5inches wide.

That said, while the unit looks pretty cool, this is certainly a terrible mock-up, and I am SURE that is it will chnage dramatically before it actually comes out.

i don't like how the buttons and direction pad are level with the casing, you have to keep and eye on where your fingers are or you'll be pressing the wrong button and not even realize it until you do something wrong.

Using just a little bit of math you can guess its 7 inches long, 3 inches or so wide.  It is just  a tad smaller than game gear was.

I have a hard time believing that we will see this product released in 2004. If Sony
is only at the design concept stage with this product a year before delivery it ain't gonna happen until 2005 at the earliest. It is kinda neat looking. I have a funny feeling though that Sony may be rethinking their strategy a bit about what will actually be in the PSP since the NGage had zero impact at its high price point. Sony knows it can't be over 199 or maybe even 150 to truly start to eat away at Nintendo's handheld market share. My crystal ball says that we will see it in 2005 to tide us over until the PS3 ships in 2006. At this point Sony is not going to launch a pivotal product until it is ready.

Oh My God.

Did you guys see the end of that presentation?
Sony are planning a worldwide presence, or even dominace in EVERYTHING we do.
Our electronics, our games, our movies, our music.......our life
And that ending phrase:
'Sony is always beside you'

It sends a shiver down my spine.

The PSP actually looks cool, and if you know me, you would know that I NEVER like anything form Sony or MS. But it does look cool. And that screen looks good too.
I really don't know what to say about the size, cause there really is nothing to go by.

And there is one thing that I noticed.
That PSP won't be a pocket sized handheld.
No.
Did you notice that little wristband (or necklace depending on how big you think it is)? Sony wants the player to have the PSP outside of the pocket, so everyone can see you have one. You are cool. People will come up to shake your hand, but BUPBOW! You are playing PSP. NO HANDSHAKE FOR YOU! They don't want their product to be 'hidden' in your pocket. They want people to see you have it. That you are not afraid to show it, not afraid to play it in public.

Of course, that is all a glorified way of saying "our product is so big the only storage space you can put it in is your own two hands. No pocket, briefcase, PC tower or luggage bag can contain one. The thing that can is the box it came in, but we don't think people will think highly of you if you carry that around.
Of course, that means they when you go outside, the only thing you can do is play the PSP, but hey, that's a sacrifice we've had to make in order to create the most impossibly powerful and complex manmade machine, which also happens to be impossible large for a handheld".

I think the PSP is going to suck people in. With the advent of greater, more advanced technology that can fit into a pencil tip, there will always be a competitor to Nintendo and the Game Boy. But Nintendo have to do something to make their next GB something special. It can't just play games. Or else it will be left behind with the crowd, and no one will buy it, sort of.

Cool-looking?  It looks even "more kiddy" than the GBA...

Looks like Sony got some design inspiration from the n-Gage...

actually, i read somewhere that the psp will have scanners on the bottom of it that read your finger prints.  and if you ever set it down for more than five minutes, it will self destruct.  it will also cut off the hands of anyone else who touchs it.  (this may hurt the resale value of used psp's.)

You don't let a guy who has never seen the build of a system create a mock-up for a business presentation...So I don't think that's the case...

The register has a lot of specs and interesting info to go along with the pics: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/68/33790.html

Among the highlights are 7.1 channel sound (huh???), and that there will be multiple designs to target different users that might want a phone/hybrid etc.

NIntendo 64 ran on a modified version of the MIPS R4000 core.    And the PSp is going to use 2 of those mips chips!  So far so good to me When it comes to power and design of the PSP.  Nintendo has the potential to destroy this thing if they come out with a handheld to compete with it.  I say," so far so good for sony," because I dont know how much the thing is going to cost yet.
MINKA would say," Whooo iz numba wan!!!??"

i dont even think sony has any idea what this thing is going to cost yet. the mock up does look pretty nice though.

i've mentioned before that i think the next gb will be a portable gamecube, and i still believe that. if sony is going to cram all that they claim they are into the psp, it really will be nintendos best option and i would think it would still be cheaper then the psp(not to mention 300 games at launch). really though, i just hope nintendo doesnt base the next gb on the n64 hardware, so the gc seems like the most logical choice.

Price is going to vary.  It looks to me like they're planning on PSP technology going into a variety of devices, which means price will depend on what you want to buy.
