BREAKING NEWS, IGN and GameSpot are reporting that Dragon Quest is officially "casual for casuals."
Most of the internet can quickly figure out that any franchise that finds success on Nintendo DS effectively abandons traditional gaming and gamers in general in favor of appealing to much larger audiences. Now, we've got journalists giving the stamp of approval to that phenomenon to help describe Dragon Quest's newsworthy transformation.
In one part, GameSpot dug deep into DQ's foundation, going straight to Square-Enix's new company line, which reads:
"Square-Enix is dedicated to working with its partners in publishing, media and retail to bring a wide range of original, entertaining and high quality video games to market for all audiences from hardcore gamers to families and casual gamers."
It's apparent 2/3 of The Market consists of "families" and "casual gamers," making them the dominant force that drives the yearly spending dollars this generation. GameSpot identifies Dragon Quest IX as the unspoken spearhead of Square-Enix's casual direction of modern entertainment.
Last, IGN throws in their thoughts on the new path Square/DQ has taken:
"There is a market for casual gamers. But this is definitely not the direction I would like Dragon Quest to go, because I think it should go in the direction of movies - more creativity, more new ideas, more authors - rather than going in the direction of toys. And from a technical point of view I must admit I'm still slightly skeptical about the future of this once-classic franchise."
Wow.
