Yes, I agree to the style over realism thing, thats why I see Wind Waker's graphics impossible to get old, but the "real" world looks great for me also, texture detail and polygon count are important but they are already pretty good, this isnt the N64.

I think the problem is that the human eyes and brain have a deep understanding of the real world and are extremely good at spotting flaws in representations of reality - particularly computer generated people and their movements and other natural objects. I think attempting true represention of reality in computer games is a bit of a waste of resources - I've got reality outside my window if I like (and while we're on the subject who on earth plays sports games when they could go outside and do it for real...)

Even Hollywood CGI occasionally fails to convince and they have mad hardware to throw at the problem without the constraint of having to do it in real time and dirt cheap. I think I approve to an extent that Nintendo don't want to throw my money at the problem - but I think they ought to stick to styles that work within the constraints of the hardware. Of course they'll be accused of making games only for kids if they do :-(

[EDIT:] To clarify, I'm not intending to critisize your opinion here - It's obviously all a matter of taste and you can't argue someone's taste - just saying that aiming for a realistic style that would satisfiy me is just not achievable with on any of the next gen systems

I think the game looks really really good. And it seems to play just like WW. I really don't get the complaint.

its still FF, they actually chose FFX over Ocarina of Time as the best game of all time in one of the famitsu polls.

Are you serious?

I mean, the soccer mini-game was bazaar yet fun, but greatest game of all time? Hardly....

this was the top ten list

1. Final Fantasy X (2001)
2. Final Fantasy VII (1997)
3. Dragon Quest III (1988)
4. Dragon Quest VIII (2004)
5. Machi (1998)
6. Final Fantasy IV (1991)
7. Tactics Ogre (1995)
8. Final Fantasy III (1990)
9. Dragon Quest VII (2000)
10. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

the rest

Japan definately lost it.

TP being too "realistic" or "generic" would be the last of my worries..

What I find "interesting" is that the Sword DQ game ranked higher than Brawl... what gives?
And that Super Mario Galaxy was ranked so low.. with the splash that NSMB is making in Japan (looks to be even more popular than Animal Crossing), it should have been a lot higher.

Capcom, are you listening?

Just to be fair, RE5 was not shown in any form at E3 so they couldn't very well vote for it.  This would have been much more impressive had RE5 actually been a game announced or shown in any form.  It is neat though that on name alone, it became number nine on that list.

I don't much care how well it plays in Japan.  Is there a similar poll of the North American audience?

SEE SOME N64 MOVIES...

I known what bad graphics are like - I used to have Asteroids for the Sinclair ZX81. It used numbers from 1 to 8 to tell you what direction your ship was pointing in! Things have moved on a bit since then.

This surprises me since Famitsu readers are pretty much 98% Playstation whores who only play Square and Konami games. It's also refreshing to see a Famitsu list where all the games aren't on PS2 except Mother 3.

Oh yeah, and Twilight Princess' graphics look amazing to me, and there are plently of Xbox 360 (almost all) that don't. Why I woudln't put it at the top is because it's not really a trade show game, and because they ruined the controls.

Did he?

At another forum I go to, someone posted this list, and it said "solvent" on there too.

Someone replied with "Some legends are meant to....dissolve."

I must find a way to use "burninate" more in my daily speech.

While the dungeon wasn't all that special, the water effects are very cool, and the area surrounding the lake in the fishing demo looks absolutely gorgeous.

I agree..., but I don't think Twilight Princess is using a "realistic" style that doesn't fit the constraints of the hardware, like you say. Look at the people, the plants, the lighting. Nothing is 100% proportional, nothing is photo-realistic. The game looks more like a story book than Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within or whatever.

Having looked at the newer video and screens for TP, I'm happier with the style now than I was - I like the twilight effects.
