I think a realistic Pokemon movie could work rather well if you "maturize" it properly.

Instead of everyone carrying concealed weapons, they use Pokemon to protect themselves.

The concept is far from alien. We already have many American homes which keep large dogs for protection against burglars. This concept would build on that into what basically equates keeping these dogs and fighting them, which also exists in real life.
