We're not scientists, but let's talk science!

We kinda touched upon the topic of Milgram in the movie thread - and I thought this might be an interesting topic.  Eventually, I'd like to move into the Stanford Prison, but let's continue the Milgram talk for now.

How different do you think the results would be today? More likely to rebel against the "man"? Or even more likely to follow blindingly?

I was thinking it would an interesting thing to do in a television game showesque environment.

I'd be horribly evil though.  I'd get something like a husband and wife or father and daughter.  I'd have one giving the shocks and say "You only win when the game is finished" (which, of course, would finish with the highest "shock".  Then, I'd have the other on the other side of the wall and tell them "You only win if you can get them to stop shocking you... and you have to make it realistic.  If you break character, you lose."

Then, daughter has to know that daddy is willing to shock the crap out of her for money. :D

Science is neither moral or immoral. It's not a factor. Any morals that does exist for science is the ones we place upon it.

To be fair, that's true of anything.  Nothing is "moral" or "immoral" - it's all based off of standards set by society.

That gameshow reminds me of something... I can't figure it out though. Maybe some mafia game I once played?

EDIT: Prisoner's Dilemma, right.

The Zambardo Prison experiments were worse for only two reasons: 1) they went on way too long; 2) Philip Zambardo ended up marrying his intern (or some ****)

Didn't they go on for less than a week, even though they were scheduled for a month?

Either way, the concept smells of a reality TV show.  We'll film it in a foreign country so US laws won't apply. :D

Wait, why is it bad that he married the intern?

The Zambardo Prison experiments were worse for only two reasons: 1) they went on way too long; 2) Philip Zambardo ended up marrying his intern (or some ****)

She was actually his girlfriend and not his intern, and she had to show him the reality of the experiment since Zimbardo started to give in to the roles. The whole experiment had to be stopped since 1/3 of the students assigned to the guard roles apparently showed "genuine" sadistic tendencies and many of the students in the prisoner roles suffered emotional trauma.

The "or some ****" part was about her status as an intern. I think when I originally learned about the experiment I was told she was a "student" and not a "grad student" which could move her back within the standard creepiness rule.

From what I can find, she was not a student when the experiment took place. She got her PhD in 1971, and the experiment took place from August 14-20, 1971.
