What music should I listen to next?
« on: January 26, 2010, 11:07:00 PM »
So I need help picking a new genre or sub-genre of music to dive into next. I've been stuck on Funk for a while now (especially Pandora's "Funk Bomb" channel), so I thought it might be time to change it up completely. I'd rather avoid Rock, Rap, and Reggae unless it's something really crazy just cuz those are what I routinely listen to no matter what the music of the minute may be.

So any suggestions?

I was just recently thinking about trying to revive the old music thread because it gave some things I really liked and am in the need of new music as well.

As for Kashogi's question, I went through a period recently in which I was really into Blues music, so I'd suggest that. My interest was sparked by my love of Jason Ricci & New Blood, the blues-ish band that provides the music for RFN.

Been stuck on Funk lately, eh?  I hope you checked out Maggot Brain.

For what to check into next the (sorta) joke answer is country. ;)

The better answer is that I suggest you look into Canadian music.  That's not a specific genre but I imagine a lot of Americans are unaware of acts that us Canadians regard as mainstream artists.  If you're looking for something unfamiliar it would be a good place to look.  When I'm trying to find new acts to get into I usually look towards British acts that never amounted to much in North America.

And for no reason I all I suggest looking into Kraftwerk since I wouldn't classify that as rock, rap or reggae.

I have been listening to what could be medically described as an unhealthy amount of Eric Clapton music over the last two days.

I love how give us nothing to go go on in terms of recommending music. If it's completely random suggestions you want, it's completely random suggestions you'll get! This are some of the albums I've been spinning lately (links to youtube video in title).

The Avalanches - Since I Left You: Electronica/Dance. The ultimate party album. Completely constructed from thousands of samples from the most left field sources. One of my favourite albums of all time, and to top it off it's made by Australians. Still fucking waiting for a follow-up.

Memory Tapes - Seek Magic: Electronic/"Glo-Fi". Really chilled out electronic music from a virtual recluse who up until this album had just released tracks on his blog through various psuedonyms.

Beach House - Teen Dreams: "Dream pop"/sorta- Electronic. Dream pop is a very apt description of what Beach House do, it's really pretty easy to get lost in your own thoughts while you listen to this album. Very melodic and eerily beautiful.

Midlake - The Courage Of Others: Folk/Progressive. While technically not released until Feburary 1st, this was the follow-up to my favourite reconrd of 2006, I couldn't not download it earlier. It sounds like it was made in the 60's or something, a feat which very few bands can pull off convincingly. My favourite of the year so far.

Dinosaur Jr. - Farm: Alternative Rock. Because if you haven't heard of Dinosaur Jr. I want to punch you and if you don't like them we can never be friends.

And if you don't like anything I have suggested, **** you, give some hints as to something you may like next time.

Blues are awesome when it's done with brass, keys, or a guitar. I can't listen to anything with a harmonica though. I just find it too annoying. That said, I do like Bob Dylan a lot, but he's a genius.

Check out Heavy How You Like Me Now

I actually liked that. It's pretty much Funk and Rock though which is a no-no. I need a new genre.

I own all the Funkadelic Albums. I really despise country. The only artist I've ever liked out of that genre was Johnny Cash. And I've listened to some Canadian music. I'm actually going to a show later featuring 'The New Deal'. They're alright. I like 'Of Montreal' a lot though.

I thought this was the other music thread and I was gonna talk up the "math-rock" band Foals but i guess not... Check out "cassius", "red socks pugie", "the french open" and "tron"

I like the actually music. It has a good groove and tends to change it up a bit. It's also upbeat and jumpy so it could make good dance music. The only thing I dislike is the singing. It sounds like a mix between 'Of Montreal' and 'Modest Mouse' but not in a good way. Maybe if I listen to some more...

but it's still Rock and I'm not really looking for a new rock band now.

Stop listening to Funk, and listen to Baroness. They're fucking great. It's metal.

I enjoyed the minor guitar progression, but couldn't stand the lyrics. Just terrible for my ears.

I have been listening to what could be medically described as an unhealthy amount of Eric Clapton music over the last two days.

Not a big fan of clapton; at least him by himself.

I recommend Ego Likeness- The Order of the Reptile, and Lazy Lane - Keepers of the Gloom

Very interesting. I enjoyed the beats and the keys the women sang at on both. I just wish it wasn't so depressing. lol

I like The Avalanches. Reminds me of RJD2. Memory Tapes had good instrumentation; I just wish it stayed that way. I'll check out the other songs though. Beach House....too mellow for my tastes. Midlake -- jesus man....that's incredibly folk, but not in a good "Quentin Tarintino would use this" kind of way. Dinosaur Jr. -- meh...I didn't find anything I could hold onto with that one. Just kinda sounded like I've heard it before.

=====================================================================

Any other recommendations? I'd really like it if they were a different genre from Rock, Rap, Reggae and Funk. Electronica, Classical, Foreign, House, Trance, Jazz...you recommend it and i'll check it out.

I like 'Of Montreal' a lot though.

Of Montreal isn't Canadian.  They're a bunch Georgian Canadian wannabes.

Maybe you should check out classical music.  Bach, Handel, Mozart, etc.

They're not? Really? Bummer.

I've been listening to Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven for a while. It's perfect to study to. I haven't listened to Handel yet (I think). I'll look it up.

Edit: I just remembered I don't like Handel.
