IMPRESSIONS: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10

The operative word is tactile. Everything falls into line after that.

At an EA event last week in New York City, I got to try out EA's upcoming MotionPlus-enabled Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10. While the main focus of the event was the brand new Disc Golf mode, I also got to try out some of the regular golf, which we detailed last month.

The recently announced Wii-exclusive Disc Golf allows players to play any of the courses featured in the game with a disc in hand instead of a golf club. It's initially a bit awkward  to get used to mimicking the motion of throwing a flying disc with the Wii Remote. As you'll be able to see in the video below, I sucked at first. Because of the precision of the added Wii MotionPlus functionality, you have to be good at the physical motion of throwing a flying disc to be good at throwing it in-game.

However, once you get over that hump though itÂ’s a lot of fun to have the tactile feeling of throwing a flying disc in your own home. After you pick up the on-screen disc, itÂ’s a nice feeling to see it react to even the slightest movement of your wrist. And when you throw it, it registers everything from where you released it to your velocity and more.

However, the truly wonderful tactile sensation comes from the actual golf itself. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the Wii Remote lends itself better to mimicking the feel of a golf club then a Frisbee, but the sensation of golfing in this game is unparalleled. The addition of Wii MotionPlus is really a game-changer for any fan of golf or golf video games. Tiger Woods 10 accurately reads everything from draw and fade to strength of the shot. I remember joking with people that Bowling on Wii Sports could replace actually going out to bowl; this game might actually be able to replace going out to golf.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 comes out June 15.

Reserved my bundle with motion plus yesterday.

I can see disc golf being the party game when people are over, just like Wii Sports bowling has always been.

Like in the thread I made, if you add balance board support for accurate posturing the Wii WILL be the Golf Training/Simulation system and will be found in every golf playing executives office. Important business decisions will me made while playing this game.

Oh man, day one purchase for me!

BTW - Neal, have you played Disc Golf in reality?

Negative.
I've played Ultimate Frisbee and the like, but I've never been able to throw a disc on a golf course. I imagine it would be fun.

I'll take that as a positive sign then.  If you were to throw one w/o any experience results would be poor, just like we saw in the video above.  I'm not saying you suck at disc golf, I just think its cool that someone w/o any experience struggled in the game as they would in reality.  Was there by chance anyone there who had played Frolf?  How'd they do?

I know what you're referring to, and I don't think his approach to playing Wii (bowling from the couch, doing everything with absolute minimal movements) will work with MotionPlus.

EASYCURE: I remember thinking(don't ask me why) this was a blond haired, blue eyed, chiseled athlete. Like he looked like Seigfried before he became Nightmare.

I didn't really see anyone besides Flames/Luke play (he did worse than me :P). I'm kind of torn on the realism that MotionPlus brings about. For example, I do play golf occasionally in real life and I noticed that what I do wrong when I play, I did in the game. This is beneficial from a learning standpoint, but I feel like it might kind of suck in a video game.

I want to be like Tiger Woods in a golf video game. I don't want to be like me.

I'm really excited for this game only because it does feel spot-on and I think my dad would love it.

Likewise.  This game might finally convince my dad to buy his own Wii instead of coming over to bowl on mine every so often.
