everything the 3ds should do!
« on: September 30, 2010, 09:46:20 AM »
I think that the 2 arm’s will not both be pushing poly’s, one will be for running an OS and input devices, enemy AI and other such stuff, leaving the other one just for graphics!

The two camera’s will be capable of hand recognition, meaning you can put your hand behind the screen, and you will see a digital representation of your hand displayed in 3d which can interact with the game.

It will have apps, Imagine the things app store developers could do with the sensor’s and features of the 3ds.

and I am hoping for 3g, you can always download 3dsware, apps and other things over the 3g, as the cost of the data will be included in the cost of the software.

you can pay 1000 nintendo points and use the 3g for internet.

and for any free software or online gaming you will need to use wifi, or have paid the 1000 points.

I think 3g will make nintendo plenty of money, and for the consumer it will be a choice as to whether they want to pay to use the 3ds on the move or not pay and use wifi, but I know given the choice I would pay to use a system like this, especially if there was no contract!

That is an excellent idea. I hope that gets used in the AR games at the very least.

and as far as I know there is no 3G in the 3DS

First off, **** graphics. Secondly, neither ARM will be used for graphics, that's what the GPU is for.

Did you just say that the central processing unit has nothing to do with displaying images on the screen?

Hi

Thanks,
there hasn't been any 3g announced, but my guess is that they haven't decided not to put it in yet, my point is that they would make a killing on it if they did put it in and it would be a nice selling point.

First off, **** graphics. Secondly, neither ARM will be used for graphics, that's what the GPU is for.
Haha, obviously a lot of pent up rage lol.
Anyway it would be foolish to think that some nice looking graphics (and system power) isn't important they are, and for too many reasons to list but here are a few.
1) Nice looking games look well, nice!
2) Nice looking graphics help to sell games, therefore more can be invested if the graphics can be nice, which means longer production times, which means more polished game mechanics, physics, control sytems and just better games.
3) Nice graphics can give a game an epic feel.
4) It's easier to develop for a system when you'r not going to be constantly hitting limitations.
those are just four reasons, and all four are quite important.
In truth I would have said the same thing until I played cod world at war on a ps3/hd screen, it blew my mind.
but anyway, yes the cpu and the gpu both play a part in the graphics, although having seen 3ds screen shots I would say that the gpu plays a bigger part than the cpu.
In most of the screen shots you can see that the models look a little bit blocky (sometimes) but are rendered extremely well, that is because the cpu calculates a wireframe (polygonal) model of the game world, this is sent to the gpu which then colours (textures) it  and adds effects like shading, lighting and other stuff to it, then the gpu sends a flat image to the screen, and since the cpu is doing less work than the gpu things look a bit blocky but very nice.

My original post (I gues you didn't read the whole thing) was that only one of the arm 11 processors is actually doing graphics stuff, while the other is running an operating sytem, taking care of input and  running other game processes like enemy AI and physics, meaning the 3ds would be capable of great things as well as great graphics.

i think by now Nintendo has a pretty solid plan on what it wants to do with the system as far as networking go. The system was a go in Japan until they realised there was no way they could meet the demand in the fall.

1) Graphics mean nothing, in many cases I would rather play tetris and cubivore
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-SY91xf5pw
not my review, but its spot on

2) commercialism is the bane of artistry
3) the word epic is overused and often poorly understood.
http://www.writingexcuses.com/2010/03/28/writing-excuses-4-12-writing-epics/

4) its always a puzzle, no matter how "powerful" a system is, sometimes great ideas are developed because of limitations.

NWR has permission to use any tentative mockup/artwork I post

Ok I hope they include 3g, if not at launch hopefully in an update (think ds/dslite)
Its kind of arrogant to say "graphics mean nothing", "graphics mean nothing to you" would be a fairer statement!

I totally agree with "commercialism is the bane of artistry" (although damian hirst might not) but unfortunately if it costs a lot of money to produce your art, it's hard to just do it for the love of it!
I understand what the word epic means, and yes I guess I did misuse it but you knew what I meant, and surely language serves no other purpose than to convey meaning.
I would say that the last statement is only true a small percentage of the time, but what actually tends to happen is that a developer just says "nah we can't make this game work on that machine" and it doesn't get made.
case in point http://www.nintendo3ds.org.uk/child-of-eden-on-3ds-dont-make-me-laugh/
child of eden is the pinnacle of games as art and it couldn't have been made on the wii, it would have been impossible.
Anyway I seem to have ruffled a few feathers here, that was not my intention!

Wouldn't their need to be specific hardware built into the machine if it was to be 3/4G capable?

Yes, but nintendo hasn't fully announced everything about the 3ds yet so it might be in there but we just don't know about it yet.
or they might put it into a later iteration like the iphone did.

I don't think Nintendo will let people do that with StreetPass (might as well get used to saying that), precisely because of situations like that. Would be interesting, of coarse I guess they could put a parental lock on so parents can stop their kids system from getting pictures.

They got an app for that on the Android Market. It's not 3D, but random pic swaps with strangers might be something to come to the 3DS market at some point.
