IMPRESSIONS: MADWORLD

Throwing generic enemies underneath spikes never felt so good.

After getting the chance to play MadWorld at the New York Comic Con, it appears to live up to its hype.

The game is very easy to pick up and play thanks to the simple-yet-deep controls. The Nunchuk is used for a variety of things besides movement with the analog. The Z button jumps and the C button centers the camera behind the main character, Jack. The camera can also be manipulated by holding C and moving the analog stick.

A basic gesture of the Wii Remote does a powerful melee attack while the A button is used to do basic punches and kicks. The B button activates whatever weapon you're wielding at the time; in my case, the chainsaw. You use the weapon with a Wii Remote swipe. When the A button is held near an enemy, Jack grabs the enemy. Gesturing with the Wii Remote then throws the enemy. However, if the enemy is squirming, you have to shake the Nunchuk and then Jack head butts the sucker into submission. As you stun enemies, the ability to finish them off in an absurdly violent manner becomes available. If you press B at the correct time (when "Finish" appears on the screen) and then do the correct gesture, as indicated on screen, you perform a powerful finishing move. In the demo, I did such things as sawing off an enemy's legs and then stomping his head, and ripping a person in two.

The gore factor in this game is high, but it's extremely stylized so it's not unsettling. MadWorld is all about stylistically killing people to earn points. It's very satisfying when you notice a fan off to the side and then knock an enemy into it, only to see him be cut into pieces moments later. After I accrued a certain amount of points, I unlocked a "Bloodbath Challenge," which appears to be the category that the infamous Man Darts mini-game falls into.

The Bloodbath Challenge that I played, called Death Press, involved throwing baddies into a hole in the ground where a big spiked platform would fall into and then rise. It was very simple, but it was a lot of fun. There are a lot of really nice touches. For example, when you grab an opponent, you are automatically turned to face the hole. Also, as you throw more and more enemies into certain doom, the hole fills up with blood and the bodies begin to float in. It sounds very morbid, but the effect is really impressive.

MadWorld doesn't seem to be an overly complicated game, but it seems to do everything it intends to do wonderfully and with a lot of style. Color me black, white, red, and excited for this delightfully gory game.

So the A button is used to punch, kick and grab enemies?  Did you ever find yourself accidentally grabbing an enemy when you wanted to punch him or vice versa?
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

My only concern is that it may get repetitive later on in the game.  Aside from that, it looks top-notch.

You have to hold to grab enemies. And punching and kicking is kind of one thing in this game. It's merely a melee attack button.

Graphics-wise?  This is my concern too since Nintendo changed Twilight Princess's twilight look for this very reason.

I think I get your point. The graphical style is amazing at first, but I could see it getting stale after a while. Same with the gameplay.
Regardless, I'm really pumped for this game. If it can stay visually interesting and the gameplay holds up, MadWorld will be amazing.

Actually, I'm not too worried about the graphics.  I think it'll be like Viewtiful Joe in that they'll keep the same style throughout, but switch up things just enough to keep it interesting.  I'm talking about the gameplay.  I hope it doesn't turn into a repetitive beat'em up by the end (this could be avoided with some clever surprises and keen level design).

It worked fine for Resistance.

BURN.

;)

Personally I'm not too worried they seem to be well aware of it and have kept the gameplay length down to avoid this. Platinum Games is an extremely talented team and I really have no doubt in their abilities to make a compelling game from beginning to end. Already the game has a ton more variety then the vast majority of beat em ups.

Please do not lump Jack T with conservatives. He is an idiot as are the opinions from both sides which are so anti-violent video games.

:( Tell me about it. I recently started trying to get further in Scarface, even thought about going back to Okami, trying to make some damn money in AC:CF and....

Just bought Skate It the other day and after 2 levels or whatever its pretty fun, but i see myself skating around freely as opposed to getting challenges done so i dont mind if that takes a back seat to my other games. But i did also get Bully and Boom Blox... though i lent those to my girlfriend since she finished Trauma Center: New Blood and wanted something new to play, so it might be awhile before i get those.

Too many games dammit.. i never understood how people ever thought there was a wii drought..
