It is sad that everyone is going to check out IGN's review of this game and automatically dismiss it for Game of the Year. This game IS the game of the year. It kills Metroid Prime. It kills Splinter Cell.

I have not been this truly happy playing a Nintendo game since I got Super Mario World on SNES.

People who play the game will know that.  IGN's job is to draw numbers out of a hat and call them reviews.  The people who listen to them... well.... I have to wonder about them.

There is no doubt in my mind that Wind Waker will be game of 2003 though.

That is too bad.  All I can say about Wind Waker is that it's nothing short of amazing.  I would definitely vote this game as GOTY.  One of the biggest reasons that I admire Shiggy Miyamoto so much is that he treats games not just as games, but as an artform.  Every project that he's involved in shows this.   His games accomplish the reason that we have games, to have fun, yet he adds so much more than just that.  Wind Waker is one of those games that gives you goosebumps when you play and also when you watch the story progress.  The nostalgia that this game has adds to the over all effect and atmosphere, but you don't even need it to be awe-struck by this masterpiece of a game.  I think that this is why Nintendo continues to do well.  While other companies try to put attitude and image into their games, Nintendo brings it several levels about that.  Their games are not just image, but substance.  Wind Waker is a beautiful game, but at the same time, it has so much along the lines of story and atmosphere.  The gameplay is deep, while it challenges a person's reflexes, it also challenges a person's mind.  Sometimes, I wonder what else developers can add to a video game, since it seems that they are so advanced already, but I've learn that there is always something that no one else has done, or had done well and you can see it.  I find it really sad that some people aren't giving games like this a chance and are into that mainstream way of thinking where attitude and pretty graphics are all there is to a game.  They are missing the fact that games don't just let us have fun, but also give us a new perspective on things while they remind us of who we are.
Professional soldiers are predictable, but the world is full of amateurs.

Does anybody know if we get to battle link's shadow or mirror in this game?  Also some friends of mine are hoping the silver arrow will be brought back in this version to battle Ganon with; any thoughts?

One more thing I wanted to comment was, Hyrule is huge!  It acutally takes a good bit of time to sail to differant area's.  At time's it can be tedious, but then again it gives you a definate feel of just how large the land of Hyrule really is.  It's amazing at times, I could swear I was watching a cartoon, such as Samari Jack on TV.  The animation is very nice.  Effect are all good.  You can play this game a few minutes at a time.  Every time I have turned it on, I have played at least two hours, some of which is just exploring, and fighting the old man in Link's village.  I like fighting the Bull enemies also, really strong, but no match for Link's speed and agility.  Very happy with WW so far.

I guess I need to chime in after having played about 18 hours of Wind Waker since I got it at like 2 PM yesterday. I am absolutely in love with this game. This does beat Ocarina of Time and it also compliments it fantastically. The story so far is great (I'm around dungeon 4).

The thing I like most about Wind Waker is that it feels so much like old school Zelda. I haven't felt this since I played A Link to the Past. The artwork for the game is perfect. I honestly think this is the way Zelda is supposed to look with the monsters, the sky, the water, the life of Hyrule. It fits. I didn't feel this atmosphere in Ocarina of Time and never quite wanted to accept the game.

This game is by no means easy, either. The puzzles and challenges are very much like Ocarina of Time. The thing I notice is the damage amounts. I'm kind of glad that we don't run around bleeping and nearly dead (that always got on my nerves). I think a good amount of people will have a hard time just getting through to the end of dungeons. My guess is that Miyamoto wanted a game that was challenging for all people and the way they did it was by reducing the damage. Otherwise, if the correct amount of damage was dealt with each blow, there wouldn't be anything easy about it. So this is definitely more about puzzle and problem solving. Admittedly, I've been stumped at times in getting through some rooms of the dungeons. I've spent an hour or two just running around making sure I didn't miss something. It's great.

A Link to the Past, in my book, is (or was) still considered the best of the Zelda series. Wind Waker has resurrected the feeling I haven't had in years. It's pure fun. I think the color scheme of the world makes a huge difference (compared to OoT's dingy faded Hyrule colors, which looked beautiful at times but just weren't Zelda colors like I was used to).

As far as difficulty goes, I would say its closer to Master Quest's difficulty level than OoT.  Which is a good thing.  I recently played through a part where there are about 25 enemies, the place where you get the master sword, and was very impressed that the game ran silky smooth with that many enemies on screen.  Very fun.  I love the enemies in this game, more so than the ones in OoT.  Majora's Mask was a good Zelda game, but WW is the true sequel, and delivers in all extents.

If you are so worried about spoilers then why are you reading a thread where people are discussing the game. Maybe you should use your head and not read topics that discuss Wind Waker since they may contain spoilers. Oh, and cussing people out is against the rules so maybe you should be banned.

My daughter and I have been greatly enjoying the new Zelda. I do have a complaint however. I've noticed whilst sailing, during sunset sunrise transitions, I get these whiteish vertical lines forming. It's extremely noticable, quite annoying and offputting and quite spoils the effect of the transistion. If the remainder of the game didn't run fine graphically, I'd suspect something wrong with the game itself. As the problem doesn't occur at any other time, nor do I suspect my television or the Cube itself.

I've heard reference to something known as 'dithering' and was wondering if this was a result of that process, and , was curious if anyone else has experienced something similar? Thanks for time and input.

Sorry guys, assumed this was info everyone new already.  But seriously, thats a very small peice of info.  If that ruined the game for you, I am sorry, but maybe you should consider staying off the Hyrule board until you beat the game.  Thats what I did after the Japan version was released.  People were talking about it, and thought that I new more than I wanted to, so I didnt read the Zelda post.  As you pla further into the game, I think you will come to see that you experice will not be ruined in the least from the info you read.  But from now on, I will remember to post -Spoilers- when needed.

I think that's some kind of dithering. It happens at other times too, but it's not as noticable.

Ah, as I had suspected. Unfortunate that for as I mentioned, it quite spoils those moments. Can't say as I've noticed it elsewhere, but now that you've brought it up now I'll be looking for it.

On the whole, when we first booted the game up, as soon as I saw the wind blowing Links cell shaded hair any concerns about the 'look' of the game vanished as the 'wind' took them away. As we've continued the adventure, other than the 'dithering' effect alluded to, I've been impressed with the various lighting effects. I applaud Nintys choice for cell shading. As others have noted, the game has brought back earlier 'feelings' from earlier incarnations. I think the 'animations' are first rate, and I've enjoyed a lot of the dialogue text. My daughter and I have laughed out loud in places..."FWWWIIPPP! I say!" And we had to pause the game and howl when Link went up to the large pig back on Outset, and it tried to run away . The animation and sounds were a hoot! This kind of stuff is scattered througout the game and it's these little gems that lift the game to a new level of fun and enjoyment. Much like a Chuck Jones cartoon, this game operates on more than one level. I honestly don't know how Nintendo is going to top it in the next incarnation.

Game play is spot on, though I must be loosing my game chops. I've actually died a couple of times. Imagine having your enemies actually block/parry your attacks? Unlike Z: OOT the bad guys don't wait and attack you one at a time when 'targetting'. What a concept. I also like how the enemies react to your actions, their AI I guess. When I was fighting some Moblins I took out a bomb, when they 'saw' what I had, they ran away so the explosion wouldn't hurt them. I had dropped it down in front of them while standing on a ledge. After it exploded, they returned to the attack. Pretty spiff I thought.

Major thumbs up on this one Ninty! Very well done.

To answer yellowfellow, I'm going to have to possibly include some spoilers, so be warned...

*******SPOILERS AHEAD MAYBE*********

Here are my thoughts. They basically follow two tracks. One is that when the Hylian society sort of perished in the flood, the Zoras and Gorons fell apart, too. Their societies were reliant upon relations with the Hylians and without them, they died out. I have an even better idea, though. If you remember in OoT, Gannon went after the Gorons and Zoras first, doing awful things to them. We see that in young Link's world, and in adult Link's world the Gorons are once again faced with huge troubles (locked away). The Zoras were frozen..... the Hyrule people were still in existence. So when Gannon's evil power started to rise again (before the gods flooded the world and stopped Gannon), maybe Gannon destroyed the Zoras and Gorons. The genocide and the impending doom of Hyrule sent the people into prayinig to the gods to put a stop to it, and in return the gods felt there was only one thing they could do to stop Gannon... so they flooded everything in hopes of burrying the problem.

Sounds reasonable to me...
