Worms™: Open Warfare 2 Parachutes Into Retail for the PSP® System and Nintendo DS™

Latest Iteration of Popular Turn-Based Strategy Game Brings Unprecedented Customization Options and Online Battles To Worms Fiends around the World

AGOURA HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--THQ Inc. (NASDAQ:THQI) today announced that Worms™: Open Warfare 2 for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system and Nintendo DS™ is now available at retailers throughout North America. Following the release of THQ’s Worms: Open Warfare last year, this new title features classic Worms humor, unprecedented customization options, as well as online multiplayer mode, pitting Worms fiends from around the world against each other. Worms: Open Warfare 2 is rated E10+ and is now available for a suggested retail price of $29.99.

In Worms: Open Warfare 2, players can look forward to classic modes such as Deathmatch, as well as several new single and multiplayer modes such as Rope Race, Forts, Puzzle and Campaign modes that challenge players to use new strategies and teamwork to defeat their enemies. The game’s vast arsenal of weaponry features 11 brand new weapons including the Bunker Buster and Buffalo of Lies, as well as tried and true weapons such as the Super Sheep, Concrete Donkey and Holy Hand Grenade. Players will command their troops across six new war-themed environments based on famous battles throughout history, in addition to a fictional battle set in the future. Worms: Open Warfare 2 also takes the battle online via Wi-Fi, allowing gamers to post their Worms expertise with daily updated stats and leaderboards on the official Worms: Open Warfare 2 website. Players will also experience new, in-depth customization options including landscape and team flag editors, as well as modified hats, tombstones and victory dances for their worm teams.

An additional Worms title, Worms 2007, is also now available for wireless handsets across all major mobile carriers worldwide. Worms: Open Warfare 2 and Worms 2007 were developed by Team17 Software Ltd out of West Yorkshire, UK. The studio is currently working on THQ’s recently announced Worms: A Space Oddity, which is expected to be available in spring 2008. Worms: A Space Oddity will mark the franchise debut on the Wii™ home video game system and will feature a control scheme designed specifically for this system.

Wow, they completely rewrote it according to the reviews.  I will have to pick this up.  Though they should really have recalled the first one, and replaced it with a complete rewrite and a letter of apology.

Hmm, stores don't seem to want to carry this title... big guns don't seem to have it and Gamestop/EB only got a single copy.

Walmart is even online only...

A week without GP?  This is fantastic....
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;

To Vudu: Zing!

I haven't played a worms game since Armageddon. I have always thought it was a good series, but I never thought it had much potential in how well it would change from game to game so I never bothered buying another one. The most they would ever change is levels and weapons, and that was pathetic.

I might actually read the review for this and see what's up (other than Online).

Well there's so many knobs they can tweak [that effect game play] that you can make all sorts of "challenges" or events, and that's sort of what they did.

I'll have to wait for Walmart to ship a copy to the store as NO ONE is carrying this game...

Walmart delivered my copy...  My friend code is up, I await victims...

(First online turn based strategy ... Been waiting a while for this.  If the same sort of energy is behind the next Advance Wars I'll be saddened)

Picked it up last week.  It's really really good.  My only gripe is there doesn't seem to be any option to allow you to pick which worm you want to use... every version of worms has had this option and I got pretty much spoiled by it.  It's omission is noticeable, but it isn't a show stopper.  The game feels perfect, and my mad ninja rope skills can be put to use properly.  Surprisingly, the single player campaign mode is pretty good.  I usually pass on the "mission" type stuff in worms.  I haven't played online yet but a bunch of my friends are interested in the game so it should be cool.

Kudos to the devs on this one.  But gimme back my worm selection! x)

I haven't played a Worms game since Worms (no subtitle) 2, so the good reviews for this one combined with the fact that it's on DS are very compelling.  Unfortunately, I've had to order it online.  Why is nobody carrying this game in a brick and mortar store?

I found it at an EB Games when I was visiting Dallas.

A few small glitches I've found are:
Sometimes at the end of the round or after killing someone you don't get a chance to retreat.  This can result in you blowing up if you are low on health and turning a victory into a tie.  This also seems to happen after the first shot of a shotgun.

The backflip jump is done by pressing B twice.  This works about 99% of the time.  The other 1% of the time you jump forward which can result in you jumping to your death.  It seems to happen more at the very start of the round.  It may be that the first B press is read as "ok, ready, let's start the turn" and the 2nd is read as "oh, let's jump off of a cliff. cool."

Overall though it's a very decent port of worms.  They even added some vertically oriented levels that are better suited for the dual screen view.

I got to play 1 cart wireless yesterday.  You don't get to pick your team, the level or the scheme, which kinda sucks, but I'm hoping that's just because it's single cart play.  When we didn't get a totally assy level, it was fun.

My copy arrived last night.  I got a friend to try out single card play with me, and it was hilariously bad.  The gameplay is fine.  It's Worms at its wormiest.  The net code, however, caused us to see entirely different things from each other.  Well, the first game didn't have that problem, but his system (the one with no card) locked up just as I delivered the finishing blow.  My system moved on to the next round, and didn't stop the game until he reset.  The second match went fine until I watched him walk a worm just a hair too far and tumble into the water.  I laughed at him for a moment before realizing he hadn't finished his turn.  He ended up in the drink anyway, although on his system he took one of my worms with him and reshaped the landscape a little.  Fortunately, it didn't interfere with my next turn, which didn't involve any of those worms.  If I hadn't won the game on that turn, however, very weird things might have happened when I got control of the worm he had killed or the one standing nearby.  Unfortunately, there's no hotseat play, so we gave up on it and played Smash Bros.

I don't know if multicard play is any better, but I hope it is.  I especially hope these problems don't happen on WiFi Connection matches, though I don't know how anyone could verify that.  I guess if someone appears to do something really stupid, you can assume it's just the game getting out of sync.

Lies, there is hot seat play. I've done it.  Just set up a custom match and add multiple human teams.
