Well, I find music and movies much more replayable than games - music especially, since it's shorter and you don't have to invest much time per session.

As IceCold already said, most people listen to albums more than once.  Hell, I've probably listened to The Downward Spiral about four hundred times, easily.  (Granted, I've purchased the damn thing three times, but that's besides the point.)  If I purchased the CD for $15 that equates to less than four cents per hour.  Not bad.

You could all get jobs as "gaming journalists."  Then you won't be playing for nothing.

I think Gaming can be a fairly expensive hobby.

Ask yourself how much money a year do you spend on video games?  Me...this year I have spent over $200.00 and will be approaching another $200.00 by the year end.

That isn't cheap.  That means for an entire year I have spent over $400.00.

Now, think about some of the different hobbies out there and tell me if it is that expensive:

Stamp collecting
Sewing
Baseball
Soccer
Bike Riding
Track
Swimming
Illustrating
Camping
Football
Basketball
Disc Golf
Puppets
Trading Card Games

You can go on and on with the list.  Most of those hobbies do not REQUIRE large investments...and many that do require larger investments don't require continual investments like video games do.

If you're a Cheapassgamer - which you should be - then you can enjoy gaming pretty extensively and pretty cheaply.

Which I do.

I have been talking to a friend of mine about gaming and how expensive it is.  Basically, I don't understand how people can afford to own multiple consoles.  It doubles the number of games you want to buy, and therefore doubles the number of games you can't play.

Unless you decide just to rent games and play through them, but still that isn't the best solution either.

Like I said before it depends on the application... Take chess.  If your just playing it to pass time then it's by definition a pastime.  If you like to carve your own pieces, collect sets, compete, follow major chess events, then it's more of a hobby.

A hobby is more in lines with the amount of time and attention and not the $$ invested.

Video games can be a hobby... but for most people it's just a pastime.

$1000 for a year-long entertainment budget is absolutely incredible.

There are hobbies that can burn that kind of money in a week so a YEAR for $1000 is excellent.

Gaming is a relatively inexpensive hobby compared to much of the things that normally classify as hobbies, but it also depends on how into it you are.

If you bought every system and every 7.0 or better game on every system, it would be pretty damn expensive.

Shecky, umm, how to say...

Right there, on the page you cited to show the difference between hobby and pastime, at the link you provided... "hobby" was listed as a synonym to "pastime."
