Exclusive Content you already own (Idea)
« on: May 24, 2005, 06:13:16 AM »
I have an idea for another possible way to market the Rev.

Suppose the last few big Cube releases (Zelda, Kirby, et al) had some exclusive content on the disc that could only be accessed in the Rev. Like maybe they could support the new controller in some fashion, or maybe offer an exclusive sidestory/dungeon in Zelda that takes advantage of the Rev's added horsepower. Or if Mario Strikers supported the Rev's online service.

I imagine if they had time (and disc space) they could even offer a higher resolution version of the game when it's in a rev.

That might encourage more of the Cube's owners to jump on board early with the Rev. It's also not so farfetched since they did something similar with some of the GBA games that came out around the launch of the GBP

I dunno i think most die harders, basicly everyone that is still buying cube games that late in cycle are going to get the Nrev already.  I think giving away free cd's of videos of the Nrev in places like Wally World and EB's may be a better move.  Maybe buying a 30 min spot on G4TV or the like would be good also.

True, but it might encourage them to adopt earlier, especially if the launch lineup is less than great. Kind of like how a lot of us bought a DS to play the GBA games on a better screen, and the DS-exclusive lineup really won't be that strong until Q4 of this year.

If they do a spot (I doubt they will), I'd like to see them buy it on a channel with a little wider variety of viewers. Remember, this thing is supposed to attract non-gamers. I think it'd be funny to have one on Hallmark or Lifetime or something and show a whole bunch of middle-aged woman gamers.

"everyone that is still buying cube games that late in cycle are going to get the Nrev already."

I'd say that's probably pretty accurate.  And anyone who is considering jumping ship is doing so for some pretty big reasons (ie: dismal third party support and numerous broken promises by Nintendo).  If you're jumping ship you've probably lost faith in Nintendo in which case being able to play Cube games with extra stuff isn't going to win you back.

Plus Nintendo has a bad reputation for rehashing.  If exclusive content in Cube games and the download service are the main focus on the Rev initially then people are going to justifiable classify the Rev as Nintendo trying to squeeze more blood from a stone.  They already re-released tons of SNES ports on the GBA, released that incredibly overpriced NES Classic Series, re-released NES games on the e-Reader, and launched the DS with a port being the only first party title.  Following that up with more focus on old games isn't going to fly with anyone who's considering jumping ship.

I know I wouldn't buy a Rev if replaying old games was essential to get any significant enjoyment out of the Rev at launch.  I didn't buy the DS because of that sort of BS.

Didn't the Zelda Oracle games have some exclusive content for the GBA? I'd say the idea is nothing new to Nintendo.

The Oracle games had an exclusive store that opened up when you used your GBA.  You could buy a couple of rings you couldn't get otherwise.  It wasn't anything huge.  Certainly not as big as a new dungeon or a unique control method.

Personally, I hate the idea.  I hate it almost as much as I hate Microsoft's micro-transactions.  You pay for the game up front.  You should get access to everything it has to offer without shelling out additional cash for new weapons/maps or a new console.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

You had to buy a GBA to get access to the island on AC, that didn't take away from its enjoyability for those that didn't have one.

Well, if the games just allow for superior input using the Revolution's new controller, I won't mind. But if it's much more than that, and has elements which could be done just fine with a Cube, then that wouldn't please anyone. I think part of what Microsoft is trying to do in launching early is target Nintendo fans, and so Nintendo really needs to give the Cube its best until the last moment unless they want to lose more market share.
