Me, after winning the 2025 predictions thread:


The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct is in a few hours. Nintendo of America's YouTube post stated there will be no game information, but I was reminded to submit predictions for all both of you still posting on this forum.

• Nintendo will raise Nintendo Switch 2's MSRP. This prediction feels like the easiest layup. Sony and Microsoft opened Pandora's Box first, and Nintendo certainly isn't eating any increased cost.
• A new non-Mario Kart World Nintendo Switch 2 bundle. Gotta soften that price hike somehow.
• At least one game that revolves around or at least significantly uses the Joy-Con 2 Mouse Mode.
• Super Mario Maker 3 with a new Super Mario Bros. Wonder level theme. This feels like the only way to justify why Meetup In Bellabel Park is such a clownshow with no new Worlds/Levels.
• Mario Kart World will get a free update (i.e. actual content, more than merely a bug fix) and paid DLC.
• The My Mario Drawing Board will be released outside of Japan. I'm trying to speak this into existence. If I'm traveling to Nintendo New York for the Mario & Friends Wood Block Set anyway, I want the fake Magna Doodle while I'm up there.
• The next Super Smash Bros. will be announced/teased and won't be a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate port. Sakurai won't start posting daily updates yet.
• More features/enhancements to GameChat.
• At least one of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. I will predict this every year until I get it right.
• Need something outlandish: Metroid: Samus Returns HD SEGA Dreamcast™ – Nintendo Switch Online.

Alright, time to descend back into the shadows.

That's intentional. Separate apps mean easier development, maintenance, and deployment. If everything was on a single app, code changes could break existing functionality in other parts of the app requiring a ton of regression testing before release. As separate individual apps, Nintendo can roll out bug fixes and improvements much faster.

TL;DR: You should want separate apps. If one app fails, it won’t take the other functionality down with it, and it's much easier to fix.

What bad press and what was deserved about it?

My guess is Mario Kart World’s MSRP or merely Nintendo Switch 2 pricing in general.

Also, most people aren’t happy with Litigious Nintendo® though to be fair, the reporting on those stories is often thoroughly irresponsible and largely misleading. It’s easier to get mad about a sensationalized headline than it is to do even a minimal amount of reading.

The frustrating thing is that they had a system on the market for years that had glasses free 3D and they didn't re-release these games then.

The Red Viper emulator for modded 3DS’sesses is really good: makes use of the 3D slider, can be played 2D, has save states, and offers color palettes. It’s holding me over until I can fully mod my Virtual Boy.

But the approach they're going with is laughably greedy for a product that's notorious for being a huge bomb.  Will they even sell a thousand of these things?

Brother, have you met Nintendo fans? 😂

The Virtual Boy accessory is $99.99 USD; the cardboard one is $24.99 USD.



I may have been able to justify $99.99 had Nintendo included a wireless Virtual Boy controller.

The Nintendo Direct was fine.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was an interesting choice. The post-credits scene in the first one teased Yoshi then the inspiration for the second movie is [checks notes] a game that didn’t even include the character. Granted, Super Mario Galaxy 2 did feature Yoshi. My preference would have been to see more of the Mushroom Kingdom and neighboring lands. The plots of the games aren’t that deep so the writers are largely making stuff up anyway. I didn’t think they needed to pull the space card yet. Not a big deal either way. The first one was good so I’ll watch the sequel.

The focus on multiplayer for the Meetup in Bellabel Park expansion was off-putting given I played Super Mario Bros. Wonder entirely solo. Nintendo hinted at more actual stages which is what I banking on. I don’t have enough information at the moment to have an opinion on this. Super Mario Bros. Wonder was so good, a sequel or expansion with new stages was all I wanted. And it’s one of the few games I’ll double dip to have a digital copy for the faster internal memory/micro SD card express loading. I’m kind of kicking myself for not making the switch to digital sooner, knowing I was planning on doing so with Nintendo Switch 2.

Samus zooming around in that Tron Light Cycle had me thinking that was a spinoff at first. It’s nice that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond got a release date, and Nintendo managed to squeeze it into 2025. It suspect the Amiibo is going to be m-f-ing annoying to actually get.

Resident Evil Requiem releasing day and date with the other platforms is getting tons of fanfare yet still feels like it’s being undersold. It’s a really, really huge deal. Here’s a major third party game getting a simultaneous release on Nintendo Switch 2. We didn’t get a ton of those on OG Switch, right? You may have to fact-check me on that, Luigi Dude in particular. Hopefully, Nintendo Switch 2 performance is solid (predicting 30 FPS). This may still be a Valve Fremont game for ol’ Adrock.

That was one of the most content packed directs filled with one of the largest variety of Nintendo published games.  The fact that many people are acting like nothing was shown, has just once again shown how badly the internet has rotted the minds of many gamers. 

Over 10 years ago we would have been lucky to even see half the number of games in a single direct, and most Switch era Directs didn't have this many games.  Yeah at this point I need to stop even lurking message boards because there's nothing worth reading.  It's nice to see a few reasonable people try to talk sense, but they sadly get drowned out by the never ending wave of cynical assholes who'll never be satisfied, or just blatant trolls that have nothing better to do with their lives.

May I ask what internet hoods you’re inhabiting these days? Mostly just curious. Who TF are these people? Are they the type who will never be happy?

I was browsing a rather huge thread earlier, and the reactions seemed largely neutral to positive, leaning on positive. Anecdotally, unless there was literally nothing for me in the entire Nintendo Direct, my opinions generally lean positive as well.

I like these Nintendo Directs, but I’m not buying any of those games on release day. Still nice to see new games.

For this holiday season, I’m kind of just hoping for a sale of both Breath of the Rain and Tears of the Kingdom so I can take advantage of the improved Switch 2 performance.

I need multiple games that I can't get on the Switch 1 and a price cut for both the system and games in my country would help a lot too.

For first party Nintendo games, usually like 20% on eShop then whatever you can get at other stores for physical games. The console price isn’t dropping though. After eight and a half years, Nintendo Switch 1 is still rocking its launch price which is wild.

PS5 just got another price hike so I’m probably out on that. Help me, Valve Fremont. You’re my only hope.

No. This is specifically for Switch 1 pricing.

Despite Switch 2 currently cleaning up, it would be a colossally terrible idea to raise prices less than two months after launch. Even that pre-launch accessories price hike was pushing it. Nintendo is still in the user acquisition phase with people balking at the price yet buying the console anyway. I suspect it will push back a Switch 2 price increase for as long as possible though one is inevitable. I predict sometime in 2027.

I'd be interested in snagging a Switch OLED Model down the line just to have one with the Mariko chip that can be overclocked. That will have to wait until it's on clearance pricing. I have a launch Fusée Gelée Switch so I can mod that for now. I should replace the battery anyway.

I am wondering how folks are using and enjoying their Switch 2?

Switch 2 has been great so far. It's Better, Newer Switch® which is both exactly what it should be and exactly what I wanted. Sometimes a concept simply works really, really well, and there's no reason to futz around with it. This is the first time since what, Game Boy Advance that Nintendo didn't try to completely reinvent the wheel. Even Nintendo 3DS, prioritized the top screen so we saw fewer games do cool things the dual screen setup.

The refinements in Switch 2 hardware make sense. A second USB-C port, magnetic Joy Con 2, rubber pads on the back, mesh grating on the fan vent, and sturdier kickstand are welcome additions. Even though the integrated Ethernet port in the Dock was on the OLED model is appreciated because it wasn't outside of the realm of possibility for Nintendo to take it out.

The Pro Controller 2 is arguably my favorite modern controller. It features more refinements to an already excellent controller: lighter, better finish (notably no gloss), raised Start/Select buttons, bigger face buttons, more ergonomic prongs, headphone jack (!), and improved analog sticks. The right analog stick is actually shorter than the left one which makes sense positionally. Also, the sticks are thinner and don't touch the "wall" of the shell. This supposedly prevents wear and tear including stick drift since plastic isn't rubbing up against plastics. We'll see if this ends up being a better solution than Hall Effect or TMR. I don't know if I'll ever use GL/GR; it's nice to know the option is there. Otherwise, the only things missing from the Pro Controller 2 are the analog triggers and digital click (it's never coming back) and to a lesser extent, the speaker from the Wii Remote.

I read that the screen has ghosting especially in 2D games. I haven't tested this, and I normally do not play in Handheld Mode. A $450 console having such an obvious flaw seems more clickbait than anything. However, I don't want to handwave away other people's concerns just because they don't affect me. This may be more YMMV.

The only Switch 2 game I currently have is Mario Kart World. I don't want to write a big, long thing (yet?) so I'll only say that it's mostly fun albeit sometimes frustrating, and I appreciate Nintendo at least trying to break up the formula and introduce something new to the series. The intermission races are kind of corny. And there are tons of instances in which the game doesn't respect the player's time (notably when retrying or the lack of that option in Grand Prix/Knockout Tour). Getting Mario Kart'd in first place is still a thing.

Micro SD cards are still prohibitively expensive. I'll try to coast until at least 512 GB is available. Also, I'm mildly concerned about the Joy Con 2 connector. I feel like the male end should be on the controller since it seems more likely to break. Then again, I'm not a hardware engineer.

Just goes to show how once again the online gaming space is literally an insanely small bubble that represents less than 1% of the real world.  All the negativity that so many were saying would hurt the system, is once again something the average person doesn't give a **** about.

I don't think anyone can make this claim yet. All sales so far have been early adopters, largely the kind who wait in line for hours at a midnight launch if they couldn't preorder.

If you're strictly referring to people who claimed Switch 2 would bomb, sure. That wasn't a likely scenario given Nintendo hasn't made any dramatic, glaring mistakes. However, like Ian and a lot of people have been saying, the bigger issue is game pricing. Whether all that negativity ultimately hurts the system is yet to be decided. In the current global economic climate including and especially long-term wage stagnation, I'm inclined to lean toward yes, game prices will hurt the system.

This isn't a Nintendo specific problem. Sony and Microsoft have raised prices on hardware that has been on the market for nearly half a decade. Across the board, everyone is going to feel the squeeze. The shortsighted view is that this is merely a $10 or $20 price hike depending on the game. The reality is that even $60 for a video game was getting hard to justify because everything else was getting more expensive. It's just the hierarchy of needs, can't spend recreationally when you have to pay rent and buy groceries. Even fast food isn't cheap anymore. 🤷‍♀️

I can’t blame anyone for not wanting to pay these game prices. I don’t pay that. Granted, I’ve spent $80+ on some retro games. However, those go up in price; current games eventually drop. For example, I bought Tears of the Kingdom for ~$52 in July 2023, about two months after release. Spend what you feel comfortable spending and don’t spend a penny more. It isn’t as if Mario Kart World is going anywhere.

My plans haven’t changed. I intend to snag Switch 2 at launch. I’ve already set aside money for it, and Mario Kart World is cheaper in the bundle. With everything in flux, I want to get the console itself ASAP. Sony just increased PS5’s price in a bunch of regions this week so there’s a real possibility Nintendo eventually follows suit. Digital downloads wouldn’t be subject to tariffs though I’m skeptical Nintendo will adjust the pricing accordingly.

I’ll probably get a Switch 2 Pro Controller though I believe Switch 1 Pro Controllers are backwards compatible, and I’ve only used one of mine to pair and update so it’s practically new. The Switch 2 Camera is gonna be a no from me, dawg.

Adding to the mix is a wild localization from a team that originally chose to include ‘90s American pop culture references such as Austin Powers jokes into a Japanese game. It’s a community fan favorite.

Darn, this is a big miss for me as I generally don't like Working Designs' translations. Some of the changes are innocuous like making a random villager in Alundra into a surfer dude. Corny but fine, I guess. Then, there are far worse instances like attempts at humor that are really off-putting as well as certain choices that recontextualize the original intent.

Maybe I'm yelling at clouds. I'd rather have a closer translation. For that reason, I was looking forward to Lunar Remastered Collection. I may have simply missed the train on Working Designs since I didn't play its published games until well after the 1990s. At least Lunar: Silver Star Harmony has a new translation. Unfortunately, Eternal Blue never got a similar remake.

Beyond that...

I would have even loved to see the Collection expanded with the other versions of the games and offshoots like Silver Star Harmony, Silver Star Complete, Lunar Legend, All The Lunar: Hyper Applications, Lunar: Sanposuru Gakuen, and Lunar Dragon Song, just to make this the definitive compilation.

...feels like a major missed opportunity and is perhaps not in the spirit of such a collection. This was probably the last best chance to get an official translation of Mahō Gakuen Lunar! AKA Magic School Lunar! (though I read it isn't very good) and/or fix Lunar: Dragon Song. Oh well.

Assuming a full on-cartridge physical copy isn't available, would you be willing to buy a game on a Virtual Game Card, or would you just bite the bullet and get a full digital copy if it came to that?

I’ve long planned to go fully digital on Switch 2 for the convenience. However, I’ve softened this stance and will get a physical copy if I see a Godfather offer. For example, I got Super Mario RPG at Staples for $30 last year.

Virtual Game Cards are the worst of both worlds for my purposes. I have to download a large file and physically switch out a game card that takes up space in my house. The main benefits are you can share with friends and trade them in, neither of which I generally do anymore.

I did recently find out that later releases of Switch game cards sometimes include version updates which partially addresses one of my problems with physical media. Something to keep in mind if I eventually buy a Switch 2 game card especially since I rarely buy games on release day.

So what is something we as gamers can do to lower the price not only by talking to Nintendo online but also with Trump and with our local governments?

Assuming this is a serious question, not much.

Nintendo can set the price to whatever it wants. NOA President, Doug Bowser, stated the tariffs "weren’t factored into the pricing" of Switch 2 so chances are, it’d get worse with tariffs. If you oppose the price, don't pay it. There are no alternatives. My expectation is Nintendo would smooth out a price increase in the United States by raising the price everywhere as it can't afford to jeopardize the largest video game market.

As for this administration, LOL. Good luck.

They’re not listening to anyone; this country is getting exactly what it voted for. Referring strictly to the economy, electing a man who inexplicably managed to bankrupt casinos (plural) to run the economy again especially after he tanked it last time was an unfortunate self-own. Anyone with even a basic understanding of tariffs immediately knew they were a fucking terrible idea. Imagine inheriting the best economy and stock market in decades then in less than three months, shooting yourself in the face.

You can try calling your representatives, but in roughly 80 days, they haven't done but jack and **** so I wouldn't expect a ton there. As always, consumers will be left holding the bag.

Then again, I guess there's a scenario where rich donors getting slammed by a destabilized market put pressure on representatives they've backed financially to actually do their jobs, and we get some of those checks and balances. Even if that happens, consumers will still be left holding the bag, but maybe it won't be as egregious.

In 2 years we might have chip plants here in the US capable of making them

Yeah when it comes to game prices, gamers have to realize that we've been insanely lucky the last few decades that game prices haven't gone up the same way lots of other prices have over the years.  With video game development cost rising way more during this same time, it was only a matter time before prices went up.

“Lucky” is not the word I’d use to describe what’s happening here. While game prices haven’t increased at the same pace as living expenses, publishers have benefited over the decades from a boom in user growth with higher attach rates. Then, the most predictable thing happened: user growth slowed (because infinite growth doesn’t exist) while development expenses exploded yet most companies never planned for any of this. Publishers aren't eating that cost; it always gets passed to consumers one way or another. We all understand this part, right? And none of this accounts for the egregious discrepancy between executive team compensation and like, a developer’s salary.

From the consumer side, wages have stagnated while spending power has lowered. Everything (e.g. utilities, groceries, rent etc.) has far outpaced inflation, just being alive costs more. And not for nothing, the inflation argument uses national averages so it doesn’t account for regional differences in wages and cost of living.

Publishers can set the price to whatever they want. When people can’t afford that price, no one benefits. Anecdotally, I rarely buy games at full price due to my LOL gaming habits. Still, I get why people are mad about this because it isn't just about me, and it reaches way farther than video games. I don't think it's healthy to live in a world as a wage slave where you don't get to unwind and relax.

That said, gaming has not always been “a rich person’s hobby”. You have Neo-dodge a lot of things to get there.

Now the question is, what is Nintendo's true motivation here?  They're increasing by quite a lot, more than what was predicted.  Are they being greedy or is this all just baking potential tariffs into the price?  I assume Nintendo set the prices anticipating tariffs.

Those are part of it, I’m sure, though I imagine there’s pressure (or at least gently nudging) from third parties. Most publishers are not managed as well as Nintendo is which has been warning the industry about rising development costs and the challenges meeting deadlines as games become more complex yet everyone told Satoru Iwata to STFU at GDC 2005. Despite having among the highest wages, retention rates, and employee satisfaction in Japan, Nintendo is still in a great position to absorb extra expenses. Beyond why-would-it-do-that (because LOL-capitalism), third parties are in greater need to hike game prices except it’d be really hard to do that if Mario Kart World is sitting there at $60.

We can make the argument that hey, maybe your company shouldn’t exist if you’re that **** at managing your own business, but it isn’t helping anything for Nintendo to view them that way.

I was pretty satisfied with the Nintendo Direct with some caveats.

$449.99 USD MSRP was about what I expected though I was hoping against hope that we'd get $399.99.

Charging for Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour is fucking LOL. I probably wasn't going to play an interactive instruction manual anyway. Now, I'm definitely not. GTFOH, Nintendo.

$79.99 MSRP for Mario Kart World is LOL 2: The Reckoning. While it looks amazing, I stopped paying full price years ago when I realized I wasn't finishing the games right away. It's entirely fair for people to scoff at the price. Personally, I wasn't even upset. Whether it was $59.99 or $79.99, I wasn't paying that anyway.

That said, I will try to snag the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle. I'm essentially getting the game for $50, and I can live with that. As soon as there's a patch or version update, the physical card holds no value to me.

$10 performance upgrade packs for Switch 1 games is in line with Sony's pricing with PS5 upgrade fees. Obviously, would have preferred free but not especially upset about Nintendo meeting Sony on price here.

I have yet to actually play The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom so getting the upgrade pack with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is a nice bonus for me.

I don't really care about GameCube on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack as I have a modded GameCube and would rather play all my games on original hardware. I'll snag one of those controllers though.

Donkey Kong Bananza looks amazing though I will, once again, wait for a sale. I originally didn't especially like the DK redesign when the Nintendo Switch 2 teaser came, but I've come around to it. I actually really like it. Donkey Kong is very expressive; it works.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond similarly looks amazing though I will, survey says, wait for a sale.

Not in the Nintendo Direct: I am patiently waiting for Resident Evil 4 Remake to be announced so I can continue kicking the can down the road on the PlayStation 5 I keep telling myself I will buy some day.

Ultimately, it's in my best interests to get the console in my house as soon as possible before those dumbass tariffs kick in and **** everything up. Nintendo hasn't dropped the price of Nintendo Switch so it isn't as if we can expect prices to drop. If anything, expect the opposite. Sony raised the prices of PS5 and its accessories so Pandora's Box is open. Different companies, sure, but it only takes one. Sony didn't even take as much heat for that as I thought it should have.

TL;DR:

• Getting the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle
• Leaning on the upgrade packs of OG Switch games included in NSO + EP to get me through Year 1
• Game prices hikes = corny, but I wasn't even paying the previous prices so 🤷‍♀️
• Donkey Kong Bananza = 🤌
• Metroid Prime 4: Beyond = 🤌

Gotta sneak this in before the Nintendo Direct in like five hours:

• Switch 2 will launch in the first half of 2025.
• New 3D Mario for Switch 2.
• At least one game that revolves around or at least significantly uses the rumored mouse-mode functionality dealie on the Switch 2 JoyCon.
• A new IP exclusive to Switch 2. I guess this could be the same game as the one above, but it’s 5:45 AM EST and my one brain cell isn’t brain cell-ing.
• The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will get a resolution/frame rate bump on Switch 2, not a dedicated remaster.
• Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack will coincide with a teaser for the new Super Smash Bros. on Switch 2.
• Native party chat on Switch 2. I keep hedging my bets on this one. A girl can dream.
• Nintendo will publish a third party game (not its own IP outsourced to a third party to develop).
• At least one of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD or The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. I will predict this every year until I get it right.
• Need something outlandish: Miiverse successor, Miiverse 2: The Reckoning (name not final), just some kind of social network or social network adjacent thing that hopefully, mercifully Nintendo does a much better job of moderating.

See y’all in the winner’s circle next year when cruise to victory with my hot and fresh takes (ignore that half of them were recycled from 2024).

BTW, this started because you first claimed that piracy is morally correct. There's no point in discussing this further when you've Neo-dodged every criticism about the original claim.

Stealing implies someone had something taken from them. Piracy never takes the original game away from the dev, it just makes a copy. You're talking about nintendo like they're a starving indie company when they're the richest company in japan period.

They have sold over 140 million switches, made over 1 billion dollars of profit on software sales and the switch is on pace to become the best selling console of all time. I think they won't lose sleep if a few million pirate their games, especially as the switch has been pirated day one.

Won't lose sleep? Nintendo literally sued Yuzu into oblivion because of people pirating Tears of the Kingdom.

If piracy hurt sales as you pretend it does, the switch would of failed.

At least someone here comprehends how piracy preserves old games. But tbh yall sound like boomers who bought the "you wouldn't steal a car" anti piracy campaigns, and can't move on and accept that publishers do a piss poor job of providing access to their legacy titles.

As a passionate fan of Nintendo, I wish they'd announce and release some really cool sequels for series I love like Mario, Metroid and Fire Emblem ... which I'll then be justified to pirate because they are a greedy **** company that doesn't deserve my respect!

Companies aren't your friends. I view it as a purely transactional relationship. I exchange money for goods and services, and if a company doesn't or no longer provides those, they don't get my monies. My respect doesn't keep their lights on.

I mean I agree with you that piracy can be bad for current gen games, especially indie games. I never pirate indie games. But if it was 1 million people pirating something like virtual boy wario land? There's no harm being done because nintendo isn't even selling it.

You moved the goal post, and I’m not interested in going down that rabbit hole here. If you want to have that conversation, start a new thread or use this one I created in 2022.

Even then for AAA games, there is no good evidence that 1 pirated copy = 1 lost sale. Especially because publishers rarely make demos anymore and a lot of people use piracy to demo games to see if they'll actually like them. Only steam has good refund policies afterall. It inherently relies on an assumption.

I mean for super popular stuff like Zelda, Mario and Pokemon they can survive, but pirates don't just stop at these games.  How would you feel if Metroid Prime 4 gets pirated over 1 million times?  Even if not every single one of those pirating the game would buy it, for smaller franchises, just getting a few hundred thousand more sales can be what makes the difference between companies greenliting sequels or deciding it's not worth continuing this franchise.

I agree with the rest of your post. Just wanted to highlight these bits.

While Nintendo’s methods may often seem draconian, no company can afford to set a weak precedent. It becomes that much harder to fight it the next time when bad faith actors push a little farther.

(And, for the record, I always though mini-discs were cool. It seemed like another leap to the future. They could create a store these huge games on these small discs. Wii with DVDs seemed like a step back.)

Opting for a miniDVD based format was such an unnecessary unforced error especially in hindsight given Wii used full-sized 12 cm discs. Nintendo forced publishers to make compromises Sony and Microsoft weren’t and during a time it really couldn’t afford to be doing that stuff coming off of Nintendo 64. Some of them chose to squeeze data into one disc. I’m still salty that Skies of Arcadia Legends has worse sound fidelity than the original on Dreamcast.

On a more positive note, the disc eject button GameCube and the smooth edge of Wii U discs were both 🤌.

May I bump this thread to express my annoyance with the fact that Broadband Adapters got stupid expensive before I got my set of eight.

I just need two more.

Would you consider aftermarket options like the Eth2GC? It doesn’t work with original discs so you’ll have to run Swiss or some other homebrew option like CubeBoot. I know it isn’t the same. The prices for the Broadband Adapter are ridiculous.
