Nintendo Gaming / RE: Super Mario Galaxy
« on: December 08, 2007, 01:18:22 AM »
Just totally finished galaxy after 36 hours and 333 deaths(202Mario and 131Luigi). It was great but I just can't say it's better then Super Mario 64.

1. Wish the hub world was bigger. I like the exploring in 64's hub world.
2. I like the yellow coin stars from 64 better then the purple coin stars in galaxy.
3. There are several stars that are just given to you.the last two stars(241 and 242) you get in the game, I thought they would be a little more open ended, but it was on rails.
4. I had no problem with the camera but several times I had problems with running from one surface to another(both under slightly different gravity), mario would get stuck a bit and not transition smoothly.
5. On smaller planetoids when running to the bottom of the object, you would be running in one direction and mario would just start running in another.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: My Wii hates me
« on: December 04, 2007, 12:47:06 PM »
I just got my wii back today. Everything seems to be good. They transfered all my saved data, setting, mail, and download account, sense they sent me a new unit. Oddly they did not transfer my VC or wiiware games, so I had to redownload those, which is not a big deal. I started to play Galaxy again currently at 185 stars and counting.

Overall I'm very happy with Nintendo's repair service, unlike most other electronic companies, I've dealt with. Be nice if it was not needed but it's there if there is a problem. Turn around time was two week on the dot, which is a little long but UPS was the main fault and odds are they are having a high load of traffic at the moment. It was only in nintendo's hands for two days.

Hey Professional 666 where did you get the mii icon.

If it's under warranty, it should be free. If your getting a new CPU, I'd wait till Jan 08. Intel is replace almost their hole lineup with 45nm chips, which run much cooler and on avg have a much higher clock rate. Also the current king of video cards the 8800GT should be done to a sane price by then(around $230 instead of $260-$320). In Jan, I'm building a new computer from scratch and I can post what my current build will look like if you want.

Sense you sent it in before you should have gotten a new one year warranty, from the day they mailed it back. The extra three months is only for when you buy a new system not a repaired one as far as I know. You should ask when you call the help line.

I also had a disc clicking read problem, mostly just happened with wii sports but it was random. Have not had a messaging or bricking problem. I registered my wii on nintendo's website, so I got a extra three month added onto my warranty for a total of 15 months.

Have you ever sent in your wii, or have you just called?

I called, talked to him for 15 minutes, he said it was covered and he would email me my UPS info. Got my UPS info in about 20 minutes and I took the wii to the UPS store, when I had to go out that day.

I just sent my wii to nintendo on Nov 19 because of this problem. I got my system on launch and I first noticed it when the godfather game came out, it was highly noticable. My problem tho does not sound anywhere near as bad as your, as it did not effect my ability to play any games so I just left it alone, but now that I'm getting closer to the warranty expiring and i've beaten galaxy once, I sent it in for repairs.

I was on the phone with the support guy(nice old guy) for about 15 minutes and he e-mailed me a link to UPS, to get my shipment(free both ways) info. They got it on the 26 and shipped it back out on the 28 and I should get it back on Dec 4th. They are sending me a new wii because the serial number is different. I also get a new one year warranty start the day they ship it back. As long as there are no problems with it when I get it in the mail, nintendo has among the best costumer service, I have ever seen in the electronic field. I had to call back a second time because I forgot to ask a question and that person was also nice. If you have a old stand def TV, tell them that up front, it will save you a lot of questions. The 2 week turn around time is a little long but that is mostly UPS and they are most likely getting slammed right now.

As a person who builds computers instead of buying them premade, I've run into this problem before and it's a defect in the GPU or extreme overheating.

I waited a long time at my local toysrus, about 45 hole minutes of pure pain

I went to the local toyrus, which was one of the few to have a midnight launch and they had a stock of like about 250, if I remember correctly. I got there at about 11:15, got in line at 11:25, and was walking out the door by 12:15, with one of the last three wii's.

Minor spoiler for end game. Just that the game is not totaly over.
Not really, as a person that has gotten all the stars I can tell you that there is still stuff to do. There is a option to restart the game from the begining with something special(You don't loss your completed game).

I just finished Super Mario Galaxy. Got all the stars in a little over 21 hours and beat the final boss twice. I thought the game was overall on the easy side. Here are the stars I thought were challanging. Making the names a little odd but people that have tried the stages should understand while people that have not done them should not get anything spoiled.

Ghost Zone Coin Challange - You only need 100/150 coins, so don't worry about getting a odd coin here and there just get coins that are in groups, and work by the outer wall before going towards the center.

Toy Zone Coin Challange - You also only need 100/150 coins, so don't worry about the odd coin. Leave the area near the starting area alone and work on the bottomleft and the top right/left parts. The top right has the most coins in a single area.

Fire Zone and the Green Star Zone "riding the ball" can both be hard. I finished the second one on my first try. I almost passed out from not breathing when I was finished tho.

Green Star Zone, wave riding can be hard. Don't try to take a shortcut to finish faster, it dosn't work I tried. You need to learn to move to the left and the right even if you can't see where your going. After you try a couple times you'll understand. Also take the blue ring area slow, after the blue ring area, you start heading up, be caeful after you reach the top the course turns pertty sharply to the right, even tho it doesn't look like it will.

Ghost Zone Boss One Hit Challange(rock guy) - Don't rush, just because you have the needed tool to attack the boss does not you always should. If you try to attack the boss every time you possible can, you will die from a mistake.

Thats all I can really think of off the top of my head, at the moment.

I watched "Howl's Moving Castle", "Castle in the Sky" and "My Neighbor Totoro". They were all good imho. Just added "Spirited Away" to my queue. Need to see if I can find a copy of the manga for Nausicaa.

There was a funny video a fan did of the Lord of the Rings the Fellowship of the Ring. They took the fight at the end and recut it so it looked like it was done by Michael Bay.

BI-WEEKLY UPDATE:

Previously Recommended
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is on it's way from netflix.
Wonderfalls is really good, no wonder fox killed it The third and final disk is at my house waiting for me to watch it. Me want season 2 Currently 5/5 stars

Supernatural Normal I don't like any type of horror shows/movies, but this is good, Currently need disk 2 of season 1. More about it after I watch some more.

Stuff I Picked
The Lost Battalion This is a very good world war 1 based movie. If you liked Band of Brothers, try this one.  5/5 stars

Robin Hood watched the first disk and it's really good also. Was really surprised, it could have been terrible. More about it after I watch some more.

Space: Above and Beyond Could barely get thru the first disk. This show has not aged well in anyway. From the acting to the special effects it's just one big meh. 1/5 stars

Transformers This move is crap, I hope Michael Bay is on strike with the other movie/tv people and he never comes back. I just don't know whats the worst part of the movie. Corny dialog, how he frames stuff in camera, the plot or the characters trying to be funny and just failing. 1/5 stars

General Chat / RE: So, I just finished the book Starship Troopers...
« on: November 04, 2007, 12:57:30 PM »
Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles is a 1999 mid to low budget animated children's  tv show. Because of that it does not have as much of the politics, the book has. They also went for a ultra realistic graphics and the show has not aged to well in that regard. Also the show ended with a cliffhanger. It's the best version of Starship Troopers in a video format, but don't expect a lot, because the show was limited. Overall they did the best with what they had to work with.

General Gaming / RE: Crysis on finite hardwares
« on: November 01, 2007, 10:48:44 PM »
For people looking for a newer video card for Crysis, there was a new super video card just released. The Nvidia Geforce 8800GT 512MB. It's more powerful then the 8800GTS 320MB($300) OR 640MB($400+) models and once prices settles down you should be able to pick it up for $200-$250. And there is going to be a 256MB version for less then $200. This move is kind of bad for nvidia in many ways because they just destroyed most of their lineup from the 8600GTS($150) up thru their top of the line 8800Ultra($750). If you take two 8800GT and SLI them, they have a huge performance difference(higher) compared to the 8800Ultra and you save almost $300. The 8400,8500,8600 series of cards are meh considering you can get a ATI Radeon X1950PRO for $135 shipped or for as low as $100 if you want to mess with rebates. And ATI X2000 Series mid to high end of cards suck badly anyway and the 8800GT just makes it worse. And their low end, again just get the X1950Pro.

8800GT Review

Can't wait till I can build a new computer later this year. I was waiting for the 8800GT(256MB or 512MB) as my videocard unless something even better comes out. I'm still waiting on AMD's K10(duo or triple core) or Intel's 45nm Core2(duo/quad), which ever is better for the money. I'll most likely go with AMD because their motherboards on avg are cheaper for what you get unless the K10 under performances.

I never said Tiger had no improvements, I said just be a little weary when you can do major upgrades, till they have been out for a while and many more people have tried it out to see if they had any show stopping problems, because of some odd thing they did not know about when as apple was testing it.  Just let the people that always upgrade at the first moment they can, kick the tires a bit.

Things like Tiger in a nutshell are a bundle of patchs rolled up into one huge single patch put on a disk, so unless you like to be on the bleeding edge, I would wait a few months to see if others are having a smooth time upgrading. Unless you really now what your doing, most of the time I recommend to people never upgrade unless their is a new feature, the update gives, that you want. If it's a single patch or a important security patch, generally upgrade should be ok.

Or you can have the install disk, blow away the current installation and reinstall fresh. But you will lose all the stuff that was on your computer. In any case before you ever do a major upgrade or reinstall, backup. Backup often.

Speaking of upgrades, I just upgraded to Xubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" on my notebook from Xubuntu 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon".

Might just start using debian testing "lenny" instead, more options, control and less crap.

I highly, highly recommend this show. Its cancellation single-handedly made me stop watching television since every show I enjoy gets canceled. Like Futurama... which luckily got renewed!

The 1966 adaptation of Edward Albee's play Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is excellent. More people need to enjoy that film.

I just looked up some backround on that show on wikipedia. Man fox hated that show even worse then firefly....
Aired only four episodes, out of order at that and changed the time it was on. That is a one two three punch there. I added the first disk to my queue.

I think we have all learned fox hates good shows...

Might I also suggest Super Natural? Great show that I think gets overlooked by a lot of people.

Own Serenity
Watch the second season of "Dead Like Me", It was really good, the episode dealing with Rube's past is one of the best in the series. Very Sad
Also they are by the looks of it bring out several direct to DVD movies and sequels, personally just give me another season of the show, but this will have to work.

Added the first two disks of Super Natural Season 1 To my queue, sounds intriguing.

I'll throw my vote on Firefly and Supernatural as well. I actually miss having tv mostly for Supernatural (and now, Heroes and Lost).

Also The Office (British or American version, both are good, for slightly different reasons).

I just started watching Lost on DVD. I can't believe I never got on the bandwagon before now, but it's great. I'm partway through Season 2 right now, and I've been very impressed with the storytelling, character development and the unexpected twists and turns. Great effects for the most part too. I've heard it said before, but it's true: it's the most "movie-like" tv show I've ever seen.

The office just did not mash well with me. I can see why people would like it, but it just did nothing for me.
Added The first two disks of lost to my queue. Heard as it goes on the later season degrade in goodness, but i'll give it a shot.
I would guess you still have a tv considering you play videogame, so why don't you uses a pair of bunny ears to watch it over the air.

Second one looks really interesting.

Yes, Wikipedia is were I found that

Other things netflix recommend to me while adding the above stuff was Robin Hood and Space:_Above_and_Beyond[

Is it just me or does fox get in the frame of mind to kill a show, before it even airs.

The uses of moon/sun in my example was just because I was limited by the message board in how I could nicely show the grading system. The -/+ lower/upper modifier could be displayed nicer in real use. Also there is no A- or B+ in the system I talked about before . Here is the system displayed as a rough chart.
