Yeah, I know Kairon, I have nothing tangible to base my theory and it could very well not happen. But to me it would just be common sense.

What you are saying about the GB/iPod merging can also apply to Wii.

Wii will have all the electronics to play movies and music, and an Apple media-center would have the electronics to play games. Combining both makes sense since you can only do one of these at a time anyway.

Oh, and just another possible clue before I go to bed... What do you think the Broadway and HollyWood code names really mean?

by the way, all this speak of nintendo comparing themselves to apple.....I FIGURED OUT THE LAST BIG SECRET OF Wii!!!

The Wii will become an iPod docking station via usb, from which you can d/l songs from iTunes on Wii Wi-Fi connection, and play them on your house speakers. Also you'll be able to d/l iPod original games on the next line of iPod that plays games using a scroll wheel, its GENIOUS!!! they alreayd made iPod with video, why not handle a simple game? when it happens, remember who called it!!!

Actually, you wouldn't be the first, I called a similar scenario sometime ago, though not here.  But I'm happy to see a second person having thought about it!

Iwata, when the Revolution was first unveiled, alluded to something that wouldn't be game related...But at the same time saying that Nintendo was to remain focused on games... So, what if some other company took care of all the non-game stuff?

They want to build a game store with a model similar to iTunes, but they don't have the expertise to build it in-house. Apple has it, they could provide the infrastructure, servers and front-end for the Wii store. And while they are at it, why not sell tunes and movies that can be played on the Wii or transfered to an iPod?

Apple is currently trying to find a way to reach living-rooms, so they can sell TV shows and movies directly on a TV. They cannot go with Sony, because they directly compete with them in many areas, including selling movies and music online. Same thing with Microsoft. Both Sony and MS hope to use their next-gen console to sell movies and music online, thus bypassing the iPod and iTunes phenomena.

If Apple released a Media-Center for the living-room like it's rumored, they would have to compete with the PS3 and XBox 360, which would probably sell for about the same price, but the PS3 and XBox would have tons more games. By making an alliance with Nintendo, they could enter the living-room media-center market, and have tons of cool games from none other than Nintendo! They wouldn't need to release their own machine, the Wii could provide all the functionality needed. iPod games from Nintendo wouldn't be so far behind...

The best argument that can be made for this scenario is that Nintendo and Apple are complementary. They don't directly compete, as Apple doesn't sell games or games system, and Nintendo doesn't want to start selling movies and music themselves on Wii.

Aside from the game store itself, Apple could also build the Wii interface, with part of it being similar to Front-Row.

By some coincidence Apple released, no so long after Nintendo, a small remote included with all intel Macs that's used to control the Front-Row media-center application. They tout the fact that it only has 6 buttons, which is not so far from the  simplistic Wii remote design. The Wii remote would be just perfect to control Front-Row, and the motion sensing could have the bonus of enabling variable speed scrolling in long lists.

A $200 TV setup box that has iTunes built-in, can download/stream music, TV shows and movies on a TV screen, that can officially dock an iPod, AND play the Nintendo game catalog, plus all new kinds of games like a next-generation Mario using an evolutionary 3d control device? This would sell like crazy...

I could go on an on about why it would make sense, and what clues can we find about it. But I don't want to look like a lunatic

Actually I stopped believing in my theory sometime ago, seeing I was the only one to see so much into it. Also when Apple announced the switch to intel, I began to think that it wouldn't make much sense since Wii is using a PowerPC. But... Apple has invested millions in producing code written for the PPC, they can't just throw it in the trash when the transition is over...

But here's why I'm starting to believe in this theory again...

Wii could (also) mean "we" as in "We, Nintendo and Apple"

Considering it would be a major alliance between a big Japanese and a big American company, my "WWII minus War = Wii" theory would also make sense...

Apple haters, prepare yourself mentally for when Nintendo drops the "Bomb" in a few days.

Just a little visual note for the few Nintendo fans that hate Apple:

Do I really have to explain?

Ok let's forget for a moment about the people that don't like the name, it's obvious that most of the time their arguments end up looking childish. They are running in circles with variations the same jokes. If you don't have anything else new to add, well... don't

For those who don't hate the name, here are some wishful speculation of mine about the name. It makes you think about WWII? But there are two "W"s instead of one...

Remove War from "World War II" and you get: World II, or Wii in abbreviated form.

World II would be a great alternate name for Nintendo's Wii.

Virtual Reality, in the broader sense of emerging interactive 3D technologies, can be described as a "second world" into which we can build and do things that are beyond our physical reality. Think about "Second Life", the online multi-player virtual world, which is also using the same concept in its title.

I guess you could also remove "World" from WWII to get Wii, but "War II" would be more suited for the competing consoles, which are pushing hard for their best-selling war simulator games. So I guess it could be either World II or War II? I like World II better...

"They chose to create new wars, Wii chose to create new worlds." Could be one of the slogan for Wii

EasyCure, great post and thanks for quoting me You should separate your post into paragraphs though, but don't worry about it, I made the same mistake (a long time ago) when I first started to post on forums.

"i wish nintendo was 'one' person. i'd go find nintendo, and beat him/her till they could no longer think. "

You just proved my point... I hope guys like you leave the Nintendo platform. We don't want aggressive bullies like you in the Nintendo community.

"It's categorically, an indefensibly bad decision."

Way to go guys, that's a solid dogmatic argument. Make sure everyone defending the name looks like a fool...

You think you are the majority, but seeing how you aggressively ridicule the name, and more or less directly attack anyone that could try to defend the idea, I'm sure many of those that are indifferent or like the name restrain themselves from posting, fearing very negative replies.

In reality, amongst all readers of this thread, you (people having a very negative reaction) are probably the minority, and it should be revealed over time, as the dust settles.

You guys are saying that the name is bad because others will make fun of it. If it's a bad thing why are you making fun of the name yourself? Why do you try to invent new sick jokes in every post? Why do you encourage and participate to this immature name-calling game?

Edit: ViewtifulGamer, great post, and you don't even like the name that much

Here's my first post... unfortunately I don't think I'll make much friends here, since I "like" the name, and I have a somewhat crazy theory about it...

It's almost impossible that Nintendo wasn't aware of the consequences of this decision, maybe the controversy wasn't part of the initial plan, but they decided to stick to it, for the sake of it and for all it stands for.

I see that some people commenting don't hate the name that much themselves, but are afraid that it may be ridiculed at school or at their workplace... Well it shouldn't be that way... Nintendo, yourself and the world in general, shouldn't be at the mercy of schoolyard bullies!

Let's say that there is new some asian kid named "Wii" in your class at school, will you:

A) Make fun his name, calling him "wee wee", and encourage bullies to ruin part of his childhood?

B) Try to look indifferent to the name, taking a "low-profile" approach to be sure not to be ridiculed for defending Wii?

C) Defend Wii against the bullies, and side with people that are tired of mean jokes and verbal abuse (or textual abuse, on the internet)?

There is a lot of intermediary possibilities, but for the post I only use 3 categories.

Nintendo wants us to be part of group B or even better, group C. If people in group A don't want to buy the Nintendo Wii because of it's name, well so be it... We don't want you playing our console, because we don't want you to drive the Wii market toward mindless, ruthless games. You like making fun of other's people name? You hate the French or like to make fun of other languages? (Oui?) We don't want you on our online gaming network.

Group B and C are really the majority, though group A tends to be "louder", and adults usually shift towards group C as they get older, and incidentally stop playing video games since what they see on the PSx and XBox is aimed at group A in particular. You see, group B and C really fit the market Nintendo seems to be aiming at with the Wii. These people won't mind the name, some will actively defend it if they have to.

After all, it's a single syllable, and the sound of it is used much more commonly to say "we", which has a more serious and profound meaning.  It also has something to do with the sound "Weee!" that we innocently shout when we have fun (usually when we were kids). Games can be serious (Chess, puzzles) and/or also innocently fun. Four players Pong with the Wii remote? That in itself could produce many "Weeee!" from perfectly sane adults in all parts of the world.

The name Revolution was a cool name and all, but it has a political meaning to many... The name also sets the expectations too high, people expecting things like force feedback and virtual reality. Wii sounds more like "A new simple way to have good old fun". People ridiculing the name will only help to create that market amongst non-players, by exaggerating the contrast between the Xbox/PS market and Nintendo's market. The XBox/PS market will be seen even more about bullying others with virtual guns, cars, making fun of names and cursing through voice links. In contrast Nintendo's market will be seen as being about simple innocent fun.

The look of the console is serious though, and there's a reason to it. Adults (a good part of what Nintendo is aiming now, despite what some say) also have "serious lives", so when they are not playing they want the console to blend with their living room. But when you power it up, the shiny blue light comes out of the dvd slot, putting an emphasis on the fun content of this otherwise serious looking rectangle box. And then you can say "Weeee!" and wave your hand in the air like some crazy kid with a laser pointer We'll get used to it, just like we'll get used to say the syllable "Wii".

The jokes will get old quickly, anyone still making these jokes in a month will only help the cause, generating a lot of "We don't care" or "We like the name".

"Nintendo wee wee ahaha"... Whatever... who's looking immature now? It's an old joke already...
