I have two XBL accounts, so you need to take that into consideration as well. All of the serious gamers I know also have at least two, some of them even three accounts. That could amount to 1mil accounts, but only 750K actual users. Could explain the different figures, but I don't think they could collaborate all that data to get those kind of stats anyway.
Although XBL has been out for almost 2 years (released in the US Nov 15, 2002), it's only been here in NZ for 5 months, and there's a few countries out there that have had it for even less time than that. That's another thing to think about because not everyone has caught on to it yet.

You pay for your subscription when you buy your Live Kit ($100NZD), so they do get profit from this system, and many people, myself included, are happy to pay this fee because the service is a great one and well worth the money. I find it much more forgiving and user friendly than online PC gaming.

Are you buying from an EB games? They privately ship their product from Aussieland, so they have player's choice titles for retail, just they're not 'official', Monaco-approved ones.

Out of interest, did you see a deal a little while ago where you would recieve a free player's choice title with a new GC? It was with both EB and Central Park down here, so I have a suspicion it was Monaco's bidding. It was on top of the Zelda bonus disc deal as well, so I sold my Cube and bought another one.

I buy from EB and Gamesman. I'm pretty sure that Gamesman has Players Choice games too.
I saw that package in EB, and really wanted the Zelda game, but I didn't wanna buy another Cube just for the game. Since you can't buy it retail, I bought it off someone that was buying the package right there and then in the store for $80 They seemed pretty happy to get rid of it...

Right with ya

Mumei, I think they just wanted to emphasize that they were linked, but the storylines don't really crossover in any way (WW's reference to the OoT Link isn't crossover imo, just trying to continue the story in a way that makes you believe it's all part of the same world, not the same story)

Sorry, my bad. You're right Mumei, that was only for this year (or more specifically, the year ending this year...lol, weird electronics market), should've clarified.
Yeah, as you can see from that link, Xbox is being destroyed in the Japanese market, which is why M$ is trying to raise that market's awareness of the current product before they launch the next one so they can try to contend with Nintendo and Sony on their own ground. I still don't see it ever happening though... Ninty and Sony pwn Japan

evil intentions: Yeah, you just plain can't play UT with a bad ping...
You'll beat the last level (the Maw) on Legendary if you play co-op
It's actually sort of funny that Brute Force is another fav of yours coz it's the only other Xbox game that was made with the Halo engine (dunno if you already knew that...)
mouse_clicker: I was playing against some friends at the time; if I can avoid playing bots then I will, just because they don't act at all like people (but have to admit that UT bots are prob the best I've played).

(I refuse to abbreviate it lest it have an impact on it's greatness) Metroid Prime is the best game I've played on GC, bar none. It's quite possibly my favorite game of all time, but I think that Metroid Prime 2: Echoes is going to take that place
The story was easy for me to understand, even though the only other Metroid game I'd completed at the time was Metroid Fusion. I thought the storyline was fantastic and how it crosses games is even better. The Zelda games don't do this to even nearly the same degree.

Umm guys, they're just using a model, they're not actually using porn directly. They're using the image of sex, just like Britney Spears, Christina Aguliera(sp?), and many other singers use the image of sex to sell more records, even though their target audience is mostly adolecent females :? but go figure... I guess it makes the guys watch their videos.
From a marketing point of view it's easy to see why M$ is making this move; Japan is a huge market, bigger even than the US one. If M$ can inject some awareness of the product, even if it's by making you look at a sexy girl first, their new console will have a higher chance of hitting it off there, and if they can acheive that, they'll take over the console business. Personally, I don't see it happening though. I've played a few japanese people on Xbox Live, but I bet there's way more on the PS2 Network. Xbox has already surpassed PS2 sales in the US by about 700,000 units and growing, there's no need for this kind of advertising in that market.

That seems to point to a end of 2005 release, prob a bit before christmas to get the holiday sales
Nintendo stated at the previous E3 that their 'Revolution' would be ready to release at the same time as the other contenders. Doesn't necessarily meant we'll be getting a peek at it anytime pre E3 2K5 though...

I'm pretty disappointed that one whole screen in Metroid Prime: Hunters is dedicated to just a map. It could've been used in a much better way...
The hardware is a great idea and everything's in place for revolutionary games, but it's still the developers way they use it that'll make or break the DS. I'll be getting one either way.

Even in NZ it's like that. Xbox Classic is $54.95. PS2 Platinum is $54.95. Gamecube Players Choice is $69.95. That's $60.50CAD, $45.80USD, so we're getting even more ripped off.

Oh yeah, you really can't beat CS when it comes to FPS games with alot of strategy, it's the Mack Daddy of them all. I love it BTW.
I already realised about the weapon mutators, but I'm not sure if it would be the same because it would be hard to make it work comprehensively without compromising gameplay, I guess it's possible though. Slowing down though, that's a good point, except any game that I play online is sped up if anything (it's fast enough for me already isgust but I think a great game would be a TeamDM with the Zoom Instagib mutator, dodging disabled, and the character movement speed dropped down a bit but not to the point where it's sluggish. Maybe some sort of respawn time growth rules too. It would  make the shots alot easier to hit, so you'd be forced to use cover more than in the normal game. Think that would work?

Tell me about it. It's a pretty dumb feature really, unless you have friends on your list and you wanna see their face I guess... be cheaper than a phone call I dunno, I wont be buying one.

I feel like I'm repeating myself...
It's not just having two weapons of course, the ease at which you can die is a big factor also. Halo's more 'peek round the corner and gun', coz if you run and gun, you die. My previous point with TS2 is that you can just run around without any real danger coz you take a while to die and you're very hard to hit if you run in erratic strafing patterns. Dying quickly does add another element of strategy to the game because you have to plan your assualts as a team, not just run in, grab it, and run away like I said before for TS2.

Yeah, but TS2 is just run and gun. I played it and had someone running after me the whole it took me to steal their bag and take it to my base. Where's the fun in that? Though the game does have pretty fun mini-games

Don't buy 3rd party controllers! They always break. Buy ninty! *cheesy wink --> *
Buy yeah, Ninty's the best. Except one of the N64 3rd party ones had a useable non-blister giving stick *sigh of relief*

Over here (NZ) they had a cube bundle for sale with The Sims, I think two other games and a 'FREE' standard 59 memory card. Look on the back of The Sims and how many blocks does it take to save? 60! Can't even save the game with the free 59 mem card! lol Pretty pathetic in a way...
So far I've only bought 1x251 card, got a free 59 with my cube (not the Sims bundle, lol) and I've got 2 more 59's coz they seem to be giving them away with games quite a bit. I don't own any games that need big saves so I'm alright  with my 251, but I'd like a 1000 and whatever it is one. BTW, when I bought my 251 over here it cost $79.95, 59's are $39.95

Well, it's very different in alot of ways... apart from being on different platforms (even UT on PC and UT on Xbox are almost totally different games) the gameplay is very different. You'd think they don't differ much at all coz after all, they both have CTF, they both have Deathmatch/TeamDM, but they're both very different all the same:
- UT2K4 MP you can carry many weapons, Halo you can carry 2. Making UT2K4 more action based, Halo more strategy based.
- UT2K4 has much faster gameplay than Halo, defining them even more into the action/strategy catergories.
- UT2K4 CTF you can carry the flag and shoot at the same time, but in Halo the flag carrier can't shoot. Again, action vs strategy.

Pretty much any reason I come up with will breakdown to UT2K4 being an action game, Halo being a more strategic game. I wouldn't say any one of them is better than the other; they're both popular games and both for good reason. I'd just recommend Halo for a more strategic MP game, UT2K4 for a gung-ho action MP game

Yeah, it's something that opens alot of gateways for people that are, like you say, idoits.
I expect you can only vid chat to people on your friends list, so that's one good thing coz at least it offers a small amount of control as to who you're talking to. Also, you need a credit card to actually get Live, so at least if there are kids using it, their parents will have to approve first. That kind of stuff can be locked by parents anyway (if they can figure out how ), so that's good too.

General Gaming / RE:I know there is a stronghatred for the ps2 here

imo the original Xbox controller (the Duke) is the best I've ever used, (except not great for fighting games, for that you need arcade style joystick and six buttons, NO exceptions). It's cradles well in the hand, and the button layout is such that you only have to move your thumb a slight amount. I hate the Xbox Controller S an extreme amount, but now it's the only one you can get. Triggers over buttons are debateable, but since they're pressure sensitive, they're the next best thing to an accelerator for racing games; buttons don't allow enough control over your speed.
PS2? They really should've made new controllers for this, and not used the crappy dated PS1 controller but just made it pressure sensitive (sarcastic yay!...). I don't care about the symbols because you only have to learn them and it really isn't that hard. Only game that's good for this conttroller imo is any of the SSX games (have to use your middle fingers, works really well). The stick's positions need to be changed.
Gamecube? Comfortable in your hand, but a bit too small. The button layout is pretty bad for alot of games, but works well for Zelda games, and Metroid Prime works well too eventhough it's not setup in the 'traditional' console FPS layout. I love the triggers, but the Z button is pretty lame. I don't know where they get off not making the buttons pressure sensitive; not only does it add an extra feature that the developers can work with, it also makes the controller easier on the fingers over long periods of gaming time. The octagonal indentations around the sticks work really well for 3rd person platform/adventure games, and are gererally just good for getting a precise 45 degree angle when you need it. Ninty really needs to drop their 'traditional' d-pad and stick grip designs though; the d-pad is just plain crud, you really dont wanna use it for anything except toggling stuff (Metroid, Rogue Squadron), and the stick grip gives me blisters, just like the N64 one used to (but at least it's rubbery and not that hard plastic).
Umm, I don't hate PS2, I just don't really like it either Eventhough I own one...

I think it's only for video chat so far, I don't think they'd want to intergrate it into online games because of precious bandwidth. Maybe for offline games? ala EyeToy (god help us... not another one...)

I've got an Xbox and quite frankly I really don't care if the Xbox2/Xenon is backwards compatible or not. Either way I'm still going to keep my old one and if I want to play my old games well then that's what it's there for (though it does take up alot of floor space ). The reason it may not be is because the Xbox2 may not have a HDD, and many of the Xbox's games use it to load up levels dynamically while you're playing and/or cut down on loading time by saving to the HDD, so obviously if you take away the HDD the games wont work. That's what I read anyway...

People misunderstand Halo by thinking that it's the single player campaign that everyone falls in love with; they'll play it, and like me, will wonder what all the hype is about. It's too short, some of the levels are really boring, etc. It's still good fun, but not enough so to outweigh the bad single player experiences.
To fully understand why people like Halo so much, you need to play a large multiplayer game (at least 4v4, but 8v8 CTF is best). It's only then you'll know why so many people are looking forward to Halo 2
