General Gaming / Xbox vs PC
« on: June 05, 2003, 12:36:55 AM »
I always read articles about Xbox on the console "war" but none about the impact on pc gaming. I have the feeling Xbox is a serious threat to pc  games, with so much Xbox games being ports of pc games. Is there a clash between the pc and Xbox communities? Or maybe a large chunk of the Xbox players used to be PC players who switched to this more convinient pc-console?
Did Xbox have any impact on pc software sales?

Nintendo Gaming / There will be no Spaceworld 2003.

I still don't understand why Nintendo doesn't have a showing at the Tokyo Game show... Wrong audience? TGS has not much impact media-wise?

Nintendo Gaming / nintendo's next system

Um Iwata hinting that the next console will be retro compatible with GCN games, I doubt it will go for the normal DVD. And Nintendo is on the frontline concerning anti-piracy, so I would not be suprised if again there is a proprietary format. I don't think it's an issue as long as the prices are fair to attract 3rd parties.

I believe too Nintendo will keep to its philosophy of Game-machine only. To be competitive they need to launch the new console at a low price, something you can't do if you have too much multimedia/ non-game related options. And then Nintendo gains money from software, I think you must have royalties to pay to Sony for Dvd movies? (could be wrong on this one), and no need to distract palers from games with "gimmicks". In the long run, an affordable gaming machine might appeal more to people getting confused with the heavy priced multimedia boxes, Sony and Microsoft want to lead to.

But I think as far as gaming is concerned, the next console must have all included as you said. Wireless controllers built-in, hard drive, or high capacity media storage, something to link out-of-the-box with the next GB iteration( no need to buy a lousy cable), and online capabilities.

And most importantly, support at launch from 3rd parties, AAA launch titles, and before Sony or microsoft.

Nintendo Gaming / Wind Waker Sales.
« on: May 30, 2003, 11:02:46 PM »
A few weeks ago, their was a statement from NOE saying they had sold  500 000 WW in Europe. In france, one of the major game retailer had to reorder the game several times in May and had one of the biggest preorder for a game (bigger than for MGS 2 or GTA: VC; ).
I wouldn't be surprised if worlwide sales were over 2 millions.

Nintendo Gaming / Sonys PSP vs. GBA- Does Nintendo have a chance?
« on: May 29, 2003, 10:14:51 AM »
I have the impression the GBA SP is the response to the (vaporware for now) PSP. I read on some supposedly  "serious"websites that Nintendo  have "shitted their pants" when Sony announced the handheld at E3, but I think Nintendo was aware of it for many months and released the SP, not because of GBA users demand for a backlight, but to get a hold of the (semi) adult market (if their ads campaign is any indication).
The adult market allowed the PSOne to become successfull, and Nintendo couldn't let that happen again. THe GBA Sp allows Nintendo to secure it : Nintendo doesn't have to respond to the PSP immediatly.

Why not ? we'll get a good game quicker that way, and it means lower developping costs on a game that will sell a lot for Nintendo : everyone is happy

Nintendo Gaming / Wind Waker 2

The ending of Wind Waker is very *spoilers*open*spoilers* and gives a lot of opportunities for a sequel, and different "set-ups".

Maybe Link's sea travel will take him to the land of the Gerudos. Or some mysterious Island. Doesn't need to be in Hyrule.  You don't need Zelda or Ganon to get a great Zelda game : Link's Awakening is in my opinion the best of the series. You mesure the quality of a Zelda by the dungeon design, the puzzles, the gameplay. The plot is secondary.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo, GBA and 3rd Parties.
« on: May 28, 2003, 05:14:39 AM »
I read more and more reports that most 3 rd parties don't make a lot of cash with their GBA games (though one could think the opposite seeing the number of games available for GBA), as the manufacturing costs from Nintendo are high. And because of that a lot of developpers will switch support to PSP. Deja-vu?

General Gaming / RE: No News on AC2?
« on: May 24, 2003, 06:07:48 AM »
I fear AC2 won't show up until next-gen. The japaneses get a release of the american version of AC... and then there is this deal with EA and this Sims project on GC/GBA : Sims and AC battle in the same genre category (though I prefer a lot AC), Nintendo won't take the risk to overshadow EA title to keep this third party happy...
