Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 47 - ANNUAL GIFT MAN'S REVENGE

Smash netcode is mostly fine for the more casual userbase which is more then I expected.

No, it isn't. There's no excuse for it being as bad as it is.

on Catdrugs talking aobut Smash 4;

I'd say the revision to the Ledge Mechanics is pretty huge. control of the ledge was a HUGE focal point of high level smash bros. play with the invincibility frames it offered, and the ability to steal the ledge from opponents, specially those using a teather recovery. now that the ledge only offers you invinciblity the first time you hit it before planting your feet as well as the fact that you can grab the ledge and shove folks off is a HUGE game changer. for one thing, fast falling off the ledge or falling of the ledge is not nearly as powerful of an option because grabbing on for more invincibility is not an option; you have to deal with your opponent immediately in your bid for getting back on the stage and it changes the whole dynamic of that interaction. The fact that you can grab the ledge from someone also is very important for many reasons, namely that you actually have to use offense and learn to spike if you're going to keep your opponent off instead of just taking the ledge from them.

Yeah, thinking about it more, I like it better. Or do I? Should things really be made easier for the player who allowed themselves to be put in that bad situation? I guess I'm still undecided.

in addition, they have entirely revised the DI system, as well as created new techniques such as Perfect Pivots.
Are these really meaningful changes, though? I mean, they might be, but I was hoping for some more novel changes.

Don't get me started on controls. Or do! Maybe I'll talk about it on the next episode. >:)
Actually, ep#5 on the Sirlin podcast about covers it. Check it out: http://www.sirlin.net/

I don't think with items flying about and stage hazards that GGPO would work. Also, Japanese companies like their in-house netcode rather than licensing that sort of thing. also, I'd say Smash 4's Netcode is on par with UMVC3 or Tekken Tag 2's. just keep in mind you're playing an online game on a game that natively has a wireless internet connection. >_>

Rollback-based netcode would absolutely work, and item/stage stuff has nothing to do with it. Also, since recording, I've had a lot of input from a certain game designer regarding how companies (both US and JPN) choose and implement their netcode and it's.... really depressing. For Japanese companies, it's like they don't even know that they're doing a bad job. At least Capcom/dimps used rollback code for SFxT, so maybe there's hope for the future?

Smash is still worse netcode that UMVC3 and TTT2, even before you consider the wireless-only player base ;_;

Join the Famicrew as they all get together for a bumper episode to ring in the festive season, and fight the evil Christmas robot overlord.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/famicast/39273/episode-47-annual-gift-mans-revenge

Here it is, the last Famicast of the year, and boy do we have a good one for you! This bumper episode spans 3 hours with a full 4-man crew!

New business fill sup the first hour; JC shares his feelings on finally getting his brand new Wii U set up, including his favorite features of the system. This leads into more Smash Wii U talk from the other guys, including some choice words on the online mode from Ty. Danny has a very Japanese 3DS game to discuss, the Japan eShop exclusive crane game simulator also known as Home Menu Kazareru Badge Torēru Center. Find out just what the hell is this "game" is, and if it’s something you’d like to come to the West. Ty wraps up with talk of his Smash 8 player setup. Spoiler alert, it involves a lot of cables and multiple TVs.

The second hour runs down all the latest releases in Japan due over the winter holidays. Anyone ever heard of Rickman Battle Network? If that doesn’t entice you then there’s plenty of other great games coming out like Attack on Titan, Sega 3D Archives and…Fremium Wars? Our newly titled segment "Japanews" (see what we did there?) runs down the most exciting stories coming out of Japan including the Bravely Second special edition, Theatrhythm Dragon Quest and the Super Mario Bros movie (no, not that one).

The third and final hour starts with Life in Japan, all about our best and worst Christmas gaming memories in Japan. Learn about Danny’s tantrums, JC’ and Matt’s depressing work stories, balanced out with great stories of hot dates in Tokyo Disney Land, Christmas cakes, and our favorite winter games!

The Famicrew would like to thank all our listeners, new and old, for sticking with us this long. We really appreciate all the folks who followed us to our new stand-alone feed, and continue to listen to our now biweekly ramblings about Nintendo in Japan!

Here’s to an awesome new year, from your friends in Japan, Danny, James, Ty, Matt, and the spirit of Minoru!

Podcast Discussion / Episode 45 - BURA BURA BOYS
« on: December 01, 2014, 06:44:00 PM »

Captain Toad, the Donkey Kongs, Fake or Real, Life in Japan, all served with a side order of Nuts and Milk!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/famicast/39120/episode-45-bura-bura-boys

Cue the lights, it's time for the November studio episode of the Famicast! Hopefully you guys enjoyed the last episode, either in audio or video form, if you missed it live this time keep your eyes and/or RSS feeds peeled for the next one!

But enough about that, on to this episode! Danny talks about the end game of Captain Toad (spoiler free). Find out if he thinks it was worth the cash. JC goes next with an extended story about how he finally acquired a WiiU for a suspiciously low price. Ty then talks about his time with Trend Setter: Girl's Mode - the fashion simulator for girls! One part of that is fake, or is it real?

An extended news segment discusses the rather awesome VC releases in Japan, including four Donkey Kong games! Lots of side-topics come out of the segment including the state of the Japanese music industry, comics, and Danny buying every piece of Theatrhythm DLC.

Next up is the regular (and world famous) segment of Fake or Real, now complete with its own theme song provided by listener Perry Burkum! Mr. Catdrugs takes it away with his game show where everyone tries to guess if the crazy sounding game is, well, you get the idea by now. Frogs and barf are mentioned, naturally.

The show wraps up with your listener feedback; we had some great Life in Japan questions, and some….questionable ones too. We also had our first iTunes review since going solo. Give us one and we'll read it out on the show, too!

Famicast a go-go baby!

Okay, now that I listened to it!

I want to sperg out about a thousand things in TMNT TF, but nah. "Noh" is a type of traditional Japanese play/performance, and TF owns bones. Shoulda picked the Armagon/Ship theme. :D  Maybe I'll talk about TF on the Famicast since I know everything about it. Did you know there were some differences with the Japanese version?

That KI track was from the CD. The game version sounds like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lt0r-2xLPo

"Is Guile a bad guy?"
"and when you're counting frames and stuff like that, that's what Punch Out is."
lmao no

You did a podcast about fighting games and didn't invite me? ;_;

Its sad how the new Killer Instinct has almost no good music, a game in a series known for it's awesome tracks.

Every time I hear Fulgore's new theme, I cry a little inside.

You are super wrong, though

I guess I should clarify this in case the rules are too subtle. The ban on political discussion on the forums should be interpreted to mean that you aren't allowed to post embedded YouTube videos of campaign ads on here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 43 - NO STRINGS ON US
« on: October 30, 2014, 02:00:00 AM »

Famicast season two begins! Join the crew for a brand new adventure in Japan as good times await!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/famicast/38841/episode-43-no-strings-on-us

Welcome to Famicast season two! That’s right, we’re on our own feed now - the strings have been officially cut from RFN! Thank you to everyone who has subscribed to the new Famicast feed and just remember if you are only subscribed to RFN, you will no longer be getting "the best only Nintendo podcast recorded in Japan in English." That would make us sad pandas.

On to the show! New business starts with our only (tentative) link to Halloween with a classic game only Japanese Famicom / 3DS owners will have played, Devil World. The game that never made it to the west, for obvious reasons, turns out to be a pretty good rival for Pac-man. Listen to Danny’s verdict on whether it beats the pill-muncher at his own game.

JC gives impressions of his newly-acquired New 3DS, which he finally got after a failed attempt at launch. Turns out the new features of the system worked better than he expected leading to his conclusion that it is the DS Lite of the 3DS family of systems in his eyes. Danny also tag-teams some updated Smash impressions after he and JC played the game online with their new systems. Does the new console improve connection speed? This is the only podcast in the world to find out how the game and new hardware fare here in their native country!

Ty wraps things up with a rare N64 fighting game, and no it isn’t Killer Instinct Gold (although that is briefly mentioned). Find out how one of the few of its kind on the N64 fares against the likes of Tekken et al!

Finally the show finishes up with a return of Life in Japan ™, thanks to a barrage of suggestions sent in by a few plucky listeners. Thanks to them for their ideas, but we’d also like to ask you to keep them coming as we always need Japan-flavo(u)red questions and topics to talk about. Anything you’ve ever wondered about what it’s like to live/game in Japan, send it our way – the answer will most likely be entertaining in some way! Email us at famicast@nintendoworldreport.com, hit us up on Twitter at @thefamicast, or sound off in the talk back thread below!

Ask not what this forum can do for you, ask what you can do for this forum.

Thus, what can you suggest us regular posters can do to make this a cool forum?

I'm just saying, if I hated a forum I'd probably post a lot less than 30 times a year. Somewhere around 30 less times.

I want it to be good again :(

You know, you sure post here a lot for a guy who's constantly talking about how awful it is.

Yeah, I guess 30 posts in the last year is a lot, I better slow down

Podcast Discussion / Re: Famicast 41 - TGS TROLL GET
« on: October 17, 2014, 03:22:51 AM »
Also, I was going to say that I am ASTOUNDED that Ty didn't spend an hour of this podcast gushing about Maya and her daggers and weird conditions for her damage ender. Between her and JC Tombo, I'm kinda worried that Iron Galaxy might be more worried about making characters have a unique flavor to them rather than having characters that function and don't have some silly mechanic to them. I feel like at this point we're going to get Cinder and he's going to have a friction meter that has to be full for him to do some of his shadow moves or some BS.

Well, I only played Maya a few times at TGS and she still had some janky not-done-yet stuff going on in that build and I didn't really feel compelled to analyze a beta character to death.

I'm actually in favor of putting in highly weird and specialized characters since the first season crew cleanly hit the basic fg character archetypes. I hope Cinder has a flight mode.  >:D
