TalkBack / Nintendo Australia Releases Limited Emerald SP
« on: June 09, 2005, 03:41:46 AM »
Perfect for that incredibly dull trip down the Yellow Brick Road.

Not to be outdone by Nintendo of Japan's recently quiet announcement of a Red Nintendo DS, Nintendo Australia has quietly revealed that they will be releasing a limited edition Game Boy Advance SP to coincide with the release of Pokemon Emerald for Game Boy Advance.

A few department store catalogues for this week have also been advertising this special Game Boy Advance.  The pack includes an Emerald Green Game Boy Advance SP, a battery charger, and a copy of Pokemon Emerald for Game Boy Advance.

Artwork for the system's box can be found by clicking here.

TalkBack / DK: King of Swing Import Review
    « on: April 16, 2005, 06:15:20 PM »
When I first heard about DK: King of Swing last year at E3, I thought 'What a stupid title!  And what a ridiculous idea for a game!'  Fortunately, I was proven very wrong (although I still think the title is pretty silly) -- I can tell you right now that this GBA game is a winner.

The Jungle Jam Tournament is about to be held, the winner of which will ne named the Jungle Hero!  However, before the tournament can take place, King K. Rool comes crashing down and swipes all the medals!  With a "Don't even THINK about following me, monkey-brains!", he jets off, and a furious DK goes after him to claim back the medals.

Before you begin the game, Cranky (who isn't anymore, sadly) will teach you the basics.  DK is controlled with the shoulder buttons.  L and R are used to walk left and right on the ground (although you can use the Control Pad for this if you prefer) and pressing both down, then letting go will make DK leap straight up into the air.  There are pegs and other climbable objects -- use L to grab one with DK's left hand, and R to grab one with his right.  Holding down L or R while on a peg will rotate you anticlockwise and clockwise, respectively.  To make your way through levels, you alternate between L and R to simulate a climbing motion (and it really does feel like DK is climbing as you do it).

DK has three "hits" before he dies and you get game over.  There are no invincibility or health pickups in this game.  Instead, you collect bananas, which are counted at the bottom.  At any time during the game, if you press B, you'll restore one hit at the cost of 10 bananas.  If you press A at any time during the game, you'll activate "Going Bananas", which will make your attacks stronger and allow you to jump higher (at the cost of 20 bananas).  This makes for some really clever strategy - do you restore all your health now?  Or do you save it and use invincibility instead?  It's all up to the player to decide.

The object of the game is to find the medals throughout the stage - early on, they're obviously placed, but later, they become more hidden.  Also hidden in the game (and a nod to DK64) are Crystal Coconuts, which are optional, but add to your percentage and cause 'something special' to happen.

The great thing about King of Swing is that it keeps introducing new gameplay mechanics in each level to keep the game fresh and exciting.  Early on you learn about pegs and boards, but later you find: wheels (which you have to hold with one hand to make them rotate); levers, including ones that you need to hold with both hands and ones that you need to repeatedly pull down to trigger briefly before they reset; rocks, which you hold and then let go to throw; bombs, which are like rocks but can explode in your face if you're not careful; and cannons, which fire out pegs in arcs that you must quickly climb and let go of.  There are also special levels like one set in a twister, where you're constantly being pulled to the left and you'll see yourself falling in the background as you get sucked around.  Other special environments include water levels which have low gravity, and icy levels which have incredibly slippery climbing blocks, to name a few.

The game's graphics have a nice charm to them.  Although nearly all the characters in the game have previously appeared in other Donkey Kong Country games, here they are given a different, sprite-based look which works really well.  There are also nice little touches, like seeing DK's tie fly up in the air as he falls back down, having DK beat his chest and slap the ground when he's idling, and seeing his legs react as you swing in a direction.  The levels have a pretty, pastel look to them, with a nice selection of muted colours being used in the backgrounds.  The game also uses the GBA's rotation effects heavily throughout the game (most characters and enemies rotate to turn around), while there is also some use of scaling effects on the map screen.

In addition to the Adventure Mode, there is also a "Jungle Jam" mode, which can be played either single-player or single- or multi-cart multiplayer.  Various events are unlocked for every set of Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals you find in Adventure Mode.  There are assorted types of events, including a simple race to the finish, obstacle courses, battles, a race to break the most barrels, and a 'claim the most area' event.  Earning Gold Medals for them in Single-Player mode is to your advantage, because when you reach a certain amount of Gold Medals, you'll be rewarded.

Music and sound for the game varies.  Sound is pretty good, with some clear voice samples from DK, Diddy, Dixie and Funky (they are all playable in Jungle Jam), and there are some nice jingles for collecting items like medals and Crystal Coconuts.  King of Swing also has one of the most hilarious 'cancel' noises for a game ever.  It sounds kind of like a duck making a loud "MMMWAA" sound, and you hear it every time you back out of a menu.  It's priceless.  There are some nice renditions of a couple of Donkey Kong Country songs, but the game features mostly new songs.  While some are merely okay, there are some great songs too, like K. Rool's theme and the slow, steady aquatic theme.

As mentioned earlier, King of Swing is a great game, and not one that you should miss if you own a Game Boy Advance.  It's so good, in fact, that even if you stripped away the DK license and made it, oh, I don't know, "Raven's That's SO Swinging", you'd still have a great game.  Donkey Kong is just the icing on the cake.  You want innovation, but still want a full game?  It's right here.

NOA currently has DK: King of Swing set for the ever-so-vague '2005' date.  If you're can't wait for King of Swing, but can't get the European version, our partners at <a href = "http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=117&products_id=5600&">Lik-Sang[/url] have the Japanese version, which will be released on the 19th of May.

    PROS
    - BRILLIANT gameplay mechanic, which keeps adding new challenges
    - Heaps of unlockables and secrets
    - Donkey Kong Country references everywhere
    - Get ready to lose!  This game is TOUGH!

    CONS
    - Those raised on watered-down difficulty games will find this hard!
    - Probably not best to use on SP due to its small shoulder buttons.

    GRAPHICS 8.5
Whoa!  The pre-rendered Donkey Kong Country characters have been all sprite-ified!  And they look pretty cute, too.  The game has a nice pastel colour palette, which is easy on the eyes.

    SOUND 7
The weakest part of the package, but still pretty good.  The sounds are clear and don't distort, while the music is a mix of original DKC and new themes, most of which are pretty cool.

    CONTROL 10
An ingenious method of controlling a character, and it works beautifully.  It all comes down to timing and reaction.  The strategy of always being able to heal or become invincible (provided you have enough bananas) is a great idea.  However, a DS or GBA is recommended due to the extensive use of the shoulder buttons.

    GAMEPLAY 10
This L and R swinging method isn't just a novelty -- there's some deep gameplay in here.  Each level brings in a new hook or trick to keep you on your toes.  Or should that be fingers?

    LASTABILITY 9
"Thanks for finishing the game!  OH HERE HAVE THIS ASSAULT OF UNLOCKABLES TO KEEP YOU BUSY!"  Thanks, King of Swing!  There's also a good selection of multiplayer modes that can be played either single-cart or multi-cart.

    FINAL SCORE 9.5
An excellent first GBA game from PAON, which proves that there's still plenty of life in this system yet.  It's also quite refreshing to see a creative game that DOESN'T require an e-Reader, a microphone, or a pair of bongos to be plugged in.

TalkBack / Zelda Avalanche for Australia
    « on: April 01, 2005, 03:35:01 PM »
If you live in Australia, prepare to get snowed under a whole heap of Zelda stuff this month.

Brace yourselves, Australian Zelda fans: Nintendo Australia is launching not one, not two, but a whopping THREE Legend of Zelda products this month.  On the 7th of April (that's this Friday!), Australian Nintendo owners can finally get their hands on The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures.  The Zelda Limited Edition Game Boy Advance SP will also be launched in Australia on this date.  If you've forgotten what it looks like, here it is again:

    Zelda Minish Cap Edition

To celebrate the simultaneous release of these three products, Nintendo Australia will be launching a competition to win a holiday to New Zealand.

To enter, you need to purchase any of the above Legend of Zelda products, and then use your imagination to show how good a Zelda treasure hunter you are:

Throughout his adventures in Hyrule, Link has found countless treasures and chests filled with Rupees. How did you find your Zelda treasure? Did you find it in the dungeon of your garage? Did you solve a block puzzle in the living room to reveal a hidden chest?

Those with the best proof of their treasure hunting skills will be in the draw to set off on their very own adventure.

To be in the draw, send us a photo or 30 second video of your treasure hunt. Entries can be sent either Online or a non-returnable photo, CD or VHS by post.

All entrants must include their purchased product in their photo or footage as proof of purchase.

Entry doesn't open until April 7th, when the stuff officially goes on sale.  Until then, use that time to think up some really creative entries.

TalkBack / Action Replay Duo On Its Way
    « on: March 22, 2005, 11:35:47 PM »
Awful at games?  Soon you won't have to put in any effort!

CodeJunkies have announced that their latest incarnation of their popular cheating devices will be soon be available for the Nintendo DS.  The device is known as the "Action Replay Duo", because of its ability to cheat for both Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance titles.  Here's the news from the CodeJunkies site:

Big news for those of you lucky enough to have got yourselves brand-spanking new Nintendo DS's: Action Replay for the DS is just around the corner!

And it's not just for the DS, it's for the GBA too (hence the ‘Duo' name), so it caters for all your Nintendo handheld game enhancement needs in one package!

This cool device slots into your GBA or the GBA slot of your DS and enables you to access cheats and manage game saves. It comes with a PC application which you can use to download cheats and saves from the CodeJunkies server to be transferred to your DS or GBA. Isn't it annoying how GBA carts usually only have room for one game save? Well, with Action Replay Duo you can back up your GBA and DS saves to the Action Replay vault itself, or on your PC. Great if you share your GBA or DS with your friends.

The Action Replay Duo will be available within a couple of weeks, according to the CodeJunkies website.

General Chat / DS Problems! Already!
    « on: February 22, 2005, 12:35:30 PM »
    Hey guys,

A friend of mine has received his DS early this morning through DVD Crave.  Unfortunately, it's all dodgy.  The problems include:

    - System will stop responding to touch screen input after about a minute of being turned on
    - Power light stays on when system is off
    - Occasionally bottom touch screen flashing on and off, top screen fine

Oddly enough, any GBA games work fine.

Could you guys post here if any of you have had problems with your DS systems (if any of you are lucky enough to have gotten them early)?  We'd just like to know if this is an isolated problem or if it affects more DS systems.

    Cheers,

    Ben

TalkBack / Sakaguchi developing for Nintendo DS
    « on: February 05, 2005, 11:11:23 PM »
The former Square vice-president will be creating a game for the new Nintendo platform.

Hironobu Sakaguchi, the former vice president for Square has announced that his newly established Mistwalker studio will be working on a game for the Nintendo DS.  Mistwalker's website appeared around March last year, although not much information about their upcoming project has been revealed.  In the interview, Sakaguchi talks about the strategy RPG:

"I'm a real fan of strategy role-playing games, but I've never created one myself. So I'm planning to design one on my own, writing its scenario as well," Sakaguchi said. "I think that the elements in strategy RPGs, such as moving around the pieces or instructing [pieces to move to] areas, go perfectly with the touch-sensitive panel. I'm hoping to make it into a game that can be deeply enjoyed with just the stylus."

TalkBack / NAL To Release Two More For Australia
    « on: January 17, 2005, 11:44:00 PM »
Nintendo's Australian branch will be bringing out Project Rub and Resident Evil 4 to Australian gamers.

Nintendo Australia has sent information confirming that they will be releasing Sega's Project Rub (also known as 'Feel the Magic: XY/XX' in the US) for the Nintendo DS and Capcom's Resident Evil 4 for the Nintendo GameCube.  Unfortunately, there aren't many specific details at this stage aside from the confirmation that NAL will be releasing them in March.

It's good to see that Nintendo's getting Project Rub released near the Australian DS launch, as the game's an excellent showcase of the system's features.  Aussie Resident Evil fans will probably be relieved to actually get a date for the game, as opposed to just having to wait and see if it will come out as it has been in some cases.

More details are expected soon, so we'll be sure to let you know of any further details as soon as we receive them.

TalkBack / Rare Boasts "Our Games Are Out!"
    « on: January 14, 2005, 05:49:29 PM »
Rare updates their site, announcing that all four of their Game Boy Advance games have been released by THQ.

After being announced at Spaceworld in 2001 (remember Spaceworld?), all four of Rare's Game Boy Advance games have finally been released.  After a small hiccup (like being purchased by Microsoft), Rare's GBA game Banjo Pilot is set for release this week (with some gamers already reporting it in stores).  It's Mr. Pants! was released last year at the start of December.

Rare hints that their handheld department is working dilligently on another project, with this typically cryptic statement:

So, what now? What's next for Rare on the handheld scene, and what's our dedicated team plugging away at in the background as we speak? Well, far be it from us to keep a secret. What we'll actually be doing is -

One thing's for sure - Rare sure knows how to get that rumour mill grinding away without any trouble.

TalkBack / Nintendo Releases US Game Commercials
    « on: November 12, 2004, 10:54:52 PM »
Nintendo enlists the help of a metallic woman and a SWAT team to flaunt their latest products.

Nintendo has recently updated their site with a couple of promotional spots for two of their games: the recently released Mario Power Tennis and the upcoming (and eagerly anticipated) Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

The Metroid Prime 2 commercial is the one that was described by Reggie Fils-Aime when Planet GameCube had the opportunity to speak with him.  This commercial features a woman walking down a dark street.  As she walks along, metal is attatching itself to her as though forming armour.  While she walks, you see the view alternating between her looking normal and covered in metal.  Finally, she stands and poses, covered in metal except for her head, and points an arm cannon up at the sky, towards skittering creatures.  Then gameplay footage is shown.

The Mario Power Tennis commercial is equally bizzare.  SWAT team members are pushed onto a tennis court by their leader, while they're all looking nervous and worried.  Strange gunshot-like sounds are heard and a SWAT team member dives to deflect what turns out to be a rapidly approaching tennis ball.  Then gameplay footage is shown.

Both commercials can be found at the links below:

TalkBack / Miniscule Aliens Invade Australia
    « on: November 04, 2004, 12:09:34 AM »
    Pikmin 2 reaches Australian shores.

    NINTENDO OFFERS PROOF OF ALIENS

Shigeru Miyamoto’s Latest Creation Isn’t Your Garden-Variety Video Game

Melbourne, Australia, 4th November 2004 – With their heads sporting leaves, buds and flowers, the alien Pikmin might be mistaken for garden plants. But this is one hyperactive garden club. A single whistle mobilizes a multitude of Pikmin to gather treasure, fight enemies and solve puzzles.

The only place these tiny, hard-working creatures can be found is in Pikmin™ 2, a unique video game made only for Nintendo GameCube™ that launches Australia-wide today. In this mass-strategy sequel, Captain Olimar and his assistant, Louie, must find valuable objects to save their company from bankruptcy. They enlist hordes of Pikmin to help.

Pikmin 2 improves on the original in every way. Players can switch control between Olimar and Louie to expand the action and find new ways to solve puzzles. They also will encounter two new types of Pikmin: powerful purple and poisonous white.

Unlike the first version, the game has no time limits, so players can fully explore the world of the Pikmin at their own pace. Time even stops when players enter the new cave environments, but the underground areas offer their own tactical challenges: Players can’t grow new Pikmin there, so they must marshal their forces strategically to fight the various enemies. Pikmin 2 has a new split-screen battle mode that lets two players compete to see which of the Pikmin armies has the most skillful commander.

Best known for iconic video game characters like Mario™ and Donkey Kong®, legendary Nintendo game developer Shigeru Miyamoto created the engrossing world of the Pikmin. The first installment won the 2002 award from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences for Innovation in Console Gaming.

It also has a villain that looks like a Professor Duck with Doctor Octopus-like arms.

TalkBack / Rare Witch Project Unlock Bottles' Revenge
    « on: October 01, 2004, 02:26:50 AM »
Four years after the game's release, a new game mode is unearthed.  Dust off your Nintendo 64!

Well, who would have thought it?  Turns out that after all these years, there was still something hiding in Banjo-Tooie.  The secret is actually a new game mode called "Bottles' Revenge".  In it, the evil spirit of Bottles the Mole follows the players throughout the world of Banjo-Tooie as they play.  A second player can play counter-operatively to hinder Banjo's progress throughout the game by possessing various enemy characters whenever Banjo is close enough to them.  Some enemies also have a taunt which can be used by pressing the L Button.

    Bottles' Revenge in action

The hackers at The Rare Witch Project have managed to unearth this secret, and have posted a more detailed description of the mode on their site, along with pictures and a video of the two-player gameplay in progress.  The only catch is that you'll need either a GameShark or an Action Replay for the Nintendo 64 to be able to access it, as there doesn't appear to be any normal way to unlock the mode -- at least, not yet.  However, codes are listed for all four regions -- US, Japan, Europe and Australia, so there's no excuse for not checking this out if you have a GameShark or Action Replay.

The only other thing of note is that you can't control bosses using this mode - it only applies to drone characters.  Devil Bottles will say "Looks like I'm not needed here!" and then disappear until the boss battle is over.

TalkBack / Conker Loves Playing Game Boy...
    « on: August 10, 2004, 12:30:41 AM »
...and not even the Microsoft takeover will stop him from playing Killer Instinct on his SP.

As some of you may be aware, Conker's Bad Fur Day is being remade for the Xbox.  "Who cares?" you cry?  "I came here for GameCube news, not that damned Xbox!  I never liked Rare anyway!  They betrayed Nintendo!"

And so on.  Well, hold your horses, Negative Nancy, and take a look at this:

Conker playing Killer Instinct on his SP

Seems that while you may not like Rare, Rare's still quite fond of Nintendo.  That's a Game Boy Advance SP in Conker's hot little hands.  For those who remember the original Bad Fur Day, Conker had a couple of neat idling animations when you left him in the main overworld.  Sometimes he'd whistle, sometimes he'd look at a..er, specialist magazine, and sometimes he'd whip out his Game Boy for a quick game of Killer Instinct.

And now, to madly read far too much into this amusing screenshot.  There's definitely a green bar at the top of that screen, and what appears to be two characters facing each other.  Add to this the recent comment from Rare's GBA team in their "Tepid Seat" column:

Hopefully there will be more GBA games to come - KI & KI2 would be ideal for the GBA.

Reading far too much into this?  Most likely.  But it sure is fun to speculate, isn't it?
