TalkBack / Billy Berghammer Assumes Head Role at EGM
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:51:39 PM »
The former NWR Site Director is set to helm one of the most revered magazines in gaming.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23046

The latest Weekend Confirmed podcast on Shacknews.com features former NWR Director Billy Berghammer, and he dropped a little bombshell at the end of the show.  Billy will soon be taking over as Editor-in-Chief at the recently revitalized EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly).

For those following at home, our former chief first left NWR for a gig running the web side of Game Informer, and later wound up doing the same for G4 TV.  Now he's running EGM, a name that longtime gamers are very familiar with, and we here at Nintendo World Report couldn't be happier for him.

Congratulations Billy!

TalkBack / Iwata Talks 3DS Piracy, Health Fears of 3D Gaming
« on: May 08, 2010, 11:10:52 AM »
Nintendo's president sees piracy as a serious problem, but 3D gaming as no health problem at all.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=23041

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has stated that the upcoming Nintendo 3DS portable system will have enhanced anti-piracy features.  When asked what the features might be, he declined comment since he didn't want to give pirates any ideas.

One of the primary issues Iwata raised is what he feels is a growing tolerance of piracy. He worries that "a kind of thinking is become widespread that paying for software is meaningless", adding that Nintendo has "a strong sense of crisis" regarding piracy in general.

Iwata also touched on people's fears that 3D gaming may damage the eyesight of players, especially children.  He assured that the 3D functionality of the 3DS would be easy to turn on and off, allowing gamers to play with or without 3D visuals.

While no release date has been given for the 3DS, it will arrive before the end of Nintendo's current fiscal year in March 2011.

TalkBack / Monster Hunter Tri Launch Trailer

Here's a final trailer to whet your monster-hunting appetite before the game launches tomorrow.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22946

In case you've been hiding under a rock for the past few months, Capcom's powerhouse Monster Hunter franchise arrives on Wii tomorrow in the form of Monster Hunter Tri.  Capcom released a launch trailer today.

The trailer doesn't show much in the way of new footage, but it does display everything the game has to offer.  And in case you don't know, that's hunting big monsters, gathering materials, crafting armor, and playing with friends.  There's also some nice FMV explaining the game's backstory.

Monster Hunter Tri ships tomorrow, April 20.

Like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Tri will have post-release downloadable content.

Capcom has announced that Wii exclusive Monster Hunter Tri will will have downloadable content following its release in the form of event and arena quests.

The quests will only be posted for limited amounts of time, similar to the model used with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for PSP.  That game saw its DLC support come to an end on April 2, ten months  after its North American release.

These quests will feature unique monsters and rewards, allowing players to collect rare items and then use them to upgrade their armor to play through the rest of the game.  Events will be posted cyclically, so players will have more than one opportunity to experience them.  The event release schedule will be posted on the first Friday of every month.

Monster Hunter Tri releases on April 20 in North America.

One of the most memorable aspects of PAX East 2010 for the NWR crew was having the honor of hosting our own Live Panel, "Radio Free Nintendo: A Live Nintendo Podcast for Grown-Ups".  This was a huge step for RFN, and Nintendo World Report as a whole.

The panel was held in what PAX christened the Wyvern Theater, a meeting room tucked away by the arcade room and retro checkout room.  Here's a brief tour, along with requisite sarcasm.

As you can see, the theater is quite large, and was pretty intimidating to walk into.  We  didn't fill it up like the Retronauts podcast did the next night, but we had about forty brave souls checking us out by the show's end.  We were nervous and a little freaked out, but the panel was a blast and several of our forumers came up afterwards to express their appreciation.  Thanks for your support guys, you really have no idea how much it means to us!

We'll be posting audio and video of the live panel (note: not the official feed, that will  take a couple of weeks) over the next few days, so bear with us while we get that processed.  But let me say that the feature discussion was thoroughly enjoyable, and the Q&A session was stellar as always.

At this point PAX West 2010 is up in the air for RFN, but if - and that's a big if right now, since there are a lot of unknowns - everything falls into place we'll definitely do it again.  There's nothing like discussing games in front of a live audience.  It's challenging, exhilarating, and just plain fun.

Thanks to the Radio Free Nintendo crew and everybody that came out, and look for the live panel footage soon!

TalkBack / PAX East 2010 Video Blog #2: Roaming the Show
« on: March 26, 2010, 06:58:02 PM »
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blogArt.cfm?artid=22808

With our Radio Free Nintendo live panel in the can (more on that in the days to come), I finally had a chance to roam the floor of the Hynes Convention Center.  Even though I could barely move most of the time, I was able to get some video of sights and sounds of the show.

Like any self-respecting Director of a Nintendo  website, my first stop was Nintendo's booth.  Surely it'll be a sizeable setup, with all of those Wii games from the last Media Summit, right?  Let's have a look from one end of the booth.

Hold on a minute, it looks like the booth is really small, only has a bunch of DS kiosks, and there aren't any Wii games to be found.  Surely this can't be the case; let's go down to the other end.

Yep, don't blink that's the entire booth.  I guess I'll have to wait until E3 to play Super Mario Galaxy 2, Sin & Punishment 2, and Metroid: Other M.  Don't worry, Pokemon, Picross 3D, Photo Dojo, and WarioWare D.I.Y. will more than satisfy me in the meantime.  *COUGH*

Thankfully, the disappointment of the Nintendo booth meant that we had plenty of time on our hands to check out some of the community-driven aspects of the show.  This is stuff that you would only see at PAX, which is a show by video game lovers, for video game lovers.

A great example is the Free Play room for the uber-rare Xbox title Steel Battalion: Line of Contact. Amazingly enough, ten owners of the game DONATED their pricey setups (the huge controllers are worth hundreds of dollars on their own) for use in this Free Play room.  Check out the monstrous controller.

The game is as complicated as that controller looks.  I played on the same team as Jonny and James (it was a 5-on-5 match each round), but I never saw them on the battlefield.

Our next stop was the Free Play Checkout area, which is simply brilliant: when your number is called, you give the folks at the desk your badge and sign out any game you want.  There are dozens of consoles of all types set up in this massive room, and you find the one you need and go at it.  We played some Boom Blox: Bash Party, but there were people playing everything from Heavy Rain to Bioshock 2.  However, there was this really cool Forza Motorsport setup at each end of the room.

That's right, that's THREE monitors.  To do this you need three Xbox 360s, three copies of the Forza game, and of course three monitors.  Utterly ridiculous, but absolutely incredible to watch.

Probably our highlight of the evening was the   retro console room.  This room was exactly like the Free Play Checkout room, meaning you could give them your badge in order to sign out a retro game of your choice.  Virtually every old-school console is represented here - hell, they even have a JVC X-Eye - but what caught our eye was the one and only Vectrex, which Chris Kohler discussed on RFN 173.

Vector graphics never looked sweeter.  In fact, I think we all fell in love with vector graphics after playing the Vectrex, and came to like them even more after hitting the retro arcade room...but it's late and I'm tired, so that will have to wait for another video blog.  Tomorrow will be another crazy, jam-packed day at PAX East 2010, so we'll see you then!

Jonny and I finally arrived in Boston.  Fortunately we touched down at Logan Airport at roughly the same time, so we were able to hop in a cab and roll on over to the HoJo by Fenway Park.

We both had a couple of beers at a sports bar right next door, and now we're sitting around waiting for NWR ally Mike Sklens to arrive.

This video gives you a brief status of what's going on with us, and also gives you a taste of the sights and sounds - nay, the flavor - of Boston.

Enjoy, and remember, no Metts were harmed in the making of this video.

TalkBack / McDonald's Using DS to Train Japanese Employees
« on: March 21, 2010, 01:10:22 AM »
Nintendo's handheld expands its reach into every part of Japanese life yet again.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22781

Nikkei reports that McDonald's will begin using Nintendo's DS system as a training tool for part-time employees in Japan.  The fast food chain plans to leverage the Japanese public's existing familiarity with the device to cut training time in half.

The training software will be called "eSmart", and will be played on DS systems given to the company's approximately 3,700 Japanese restaurants at a rate of two per outlet.  The software cost an estimated 200 million yen to develop.

This training program only serves to expand the DS' presence in Japanese McDonald's restaurants, with their Nintendo Zone service already allowing in-store downloading of various types of content to the device.

TalkBack / NSMB Wii Now Top-Selling Wii Title in Japan

Mario's latest knocks Wii Fit off of the throne.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22780

The weekly Japanese sales report published by ASCII Media Works lists New Super Mario Bros. Wii as selling 35,580 copies, right behind number-one seller Pokemon Ranger: Path of Light.  What's notable about this sales tally is that it officially makes New Super Mario Bros. Wii the best-selling Wii title in Japan to date.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has now sold approximately 3,495,000 copies in the territory, inching just ahead of previous record-holder Wii Fit, which sits at roughly 3,474,000 units sold.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii has been available in Japan since December 3 of last year.

TalkBack / Tokemeki Sequel to Use 4-Gigabit DS Card
« on: March 20, 2010, 12:36:06 PM »
The upcoming Konami title will likely be the first on the market to use the super-sized DS card.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22777

Konami Japan has announced that Tokemeki Memorial: Girl's Side 3rd Story, another entry in the venerable visual novel series, will be one of the first DS titles to use a 4-Gigabit (512-Megabyte) DS card.

Level 5's Ni no Kuni is also set to use a 4-Gigabit card, and may very well ship before 3rd Story's summer date, but it's unclear if the game will actually hit its scheduled spring release.

No titles using the new 4-Gigabit cards have been announced for North America.

TalkBack / EDITORIALS: At GameStop, Freedom Has a Price
« on: March 16, 2010, 11:38:50 PM »
Jon visits GameStop in search of a free disc and gets more than he bargained for.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorialArt.cfm?artid=22770

Late last week I stopped in at a GameStop at a local mall to pick up Capcom's free Monster Hunter Tri demo disc.  I stopped in on my lunch break, and thanks to several nearby schools the place was, predictably, a zoo.  A large crowd is something I can handle, but what I have a harder time stomaching is the chain's borderline dishonest customer service.

Full disclosure: GameStop and I have a history.  I've never made a secret of my less-than-stellar customer service experiences at several of its stores, and while I wouldn't say I have an axe to grind, I'll readily admit that I'm not a GameStop fan and generally avoid their stores like the plague.  I pre-order from them only when they have exclusive swag, and enter their stores only when absolutely necessary.  The brief anecdote I'm about to relate did nothing to alleviate my disdain.

Upon entering the store, I figured that I might be able to find the discs somewhere in a floor display, thereby skipping the lengthy cash register line entirely.  I had no such luck, so I took my spot in line to wait to ask if they had them behind the desk.  Aside from the clerk manning the cash register, there was another clerk standing around on the "public" side of the counter doing nothing.  Was he on his lunch break?  I have no idea.  However, he seemed perfectly content to stand there and watch customers wait in line while he assumedly "worked the floor".  To his credit he did eventually open up a second register (maybe after he was off of break?), but this was only after the line became ten customers deep and we'd all been waiting there for at least fifteen minutes.

I had a couple of friends with me, so I stepped out of line to walk over and ask him about the demo's availability.  He told me that I had to place a pre-order to get it.  This was noteworthy on two fronts:  First, it was flat-out wrong.  The demo has been a known freebie since it was announced, and was always intended to be that way.  Second, I can only deduce that he was deliberately trying to mislead me in the hopes that I would mistakenly place $5 down on the game in order to get the demo disc.  When I challenged him on the pre-order caveat, he played dumb and asked the other clerk for confirmation.  Without looking up from her checkout duties she replied, "Yeah, it's free," in a dull monotone.  I walked up to the front of the line, grabbed my disc from the cardboard holder on the counter, and left.

All of this could be excused if it were an isolated incident.  Maybe a clerk in a store here and there didn't listen or didn't care, so when asked about the disc they didn't really know and erred on the side of their commission.  I could understand that.  However, according to an informal poll taken by NintendoGal, this "mistake" is happening at Gamestops all over the country.  In the Seattle area alone, over a dozen stores apparently denied customers the free demo altogether without a pre-order, and based on my own experiences here in Atlanta, I can believe it.

The only explanation I can come up with for this sad state of affairs is that store-level managers are tacitly endorsing this behavior, or at the very least looking the other way.  I can't see GameStop corporate encouraging the willful misleading of their customers, but the cynic in me can't see them discouraging it either.  After all, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission, right?  And certainly all Gamestop head office cares about at the end of the day are the pre-order numbers coming in from each store, so if a manager decides to "misinterpret" the price tag on a demo disc, the ill-gotten pre-order money will certainly make it all better.

However, the long-term damage on the customer end is an aversion to the company and an expectation of shady behavior by its staff.  I typically expect GameStop employees to be fountains of misinformation, pushers of overpriced used games in poor condition, and hustlers that seem like they're going to get beaten by their pimp at the end of their shift if they don't secure a pre-order.  No, I don't want a strategy guide.  I don't want "protection" for my game.  I don't want to have to pay $5 for something that we both know is free.  I will, however, take a one-way ticket out of your store as quickly as possible.

GameStop needs to start treating its customers with respect instead of trying to squeeze them for every dime.  They need promotional instructions clearly articulated across their organization to prevent individual store staff from becoming an obstacle to the game-purchasing process. With online shopping becoming easier and easier and digital distribution looming just over the horizon, poor retail service like this will ultimately result in GameStop's retail outlets becoming a thing of the past.  I, for one, wouldn't miss them.

TalkBack / EDITORIALS: Happy 11th Birthday, NWR!
« on: March 07, 2010, 05:23:30 PM »
We grows up, and we grows up, and we grows up.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorialArt.cfm?artid=22707

Your Director

Would you let this man run your website?

Is it March 7th again already?  My, how the years fly by.  Why it seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the 10th anniversary of the site, and here it is the 11th anniversary already.  And of course, Nintendo World Report just keeps chugging along.

But that doesn't mean that we're resting on our laurels (seriously, what are laurels anyways?).  Instead of some run-of-the mill "Hey look, we're 11" feature or a "This is a bunch of stuff that happened in the last year or so" special, we have something much bigger in the works.  Let's just call it a belated birthday present for us and our readers, and belated though it may be, trust me when I say it will be worth the wait.

Birthday presents aside, there's plenty of interesting stuff on the NWR horizon.  The 2010 Game Developers Conference starts on Tuesday in San Francisco, and Aaron Kaluszka will be following up his legendary coverage of Nintendo's recent Media Summit with an encore appearance at GDC.  Of particular interest to Nintendo fans is the slated presentation by Metroid creator Yoshio Sakamoto, which Aaron will be attending.  I'm sure that won't be the only noteworthy presentation, either.

The end of March will take NWR's Radio Free Nintendo podcast into entirely new territory, as we take our show on the road with our live panel at PAX East in Boston.  The conference is sure to be a blast, and even though Greg isn't making the trip across the pond, Jonny, James, and myself are looking forward to meeting some of our readers in person.  At the very least, you'll get to watch us make absolute fools of ourselves - always a treat!

With PAX East out of the way we'll start looking towards E3 2010, which is sure to be an epic show.  It's looking more and more like the new Wii Zelda title will be there in playable form, and Nintendo is sure to lift the lid on what else it has in store for the second half of 2010 (and what the heck the Vitality Sensor is going to be used for).  We're still working out the details, but rest assured that NWR will be covering the show in full force.

I feel like I say this every year, but 2010 is shaping up to be another busy one.  In addition to what I've stated above, we'll be working hard to improve news coverage across the board, provide more features on a regular basis, and maintain our blistering pace of developer interviews.  We're still looking for talented writers, editors, programmers, and graphic designers, so hit us up if you're interested.  This site requires a lot of hard work from a lot of dedicated individuals, but it's also a lot of fun and a great source of pride for everybody on staff.  If you want to be a part of the NWR legend, get in touch!

As always, thanks for reading and thanks for making us part of your Nintendo experience.  We'll see you out there!

- Lindy

Nobody was supposed to film any footage of Samus' next adventure, but hey, this is the internet.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=22665

The Examiner has posted some leaked footage of Metroid: Other M, recorded at last week's Nintendo Media Summit.

The footage seems to be a recreation of the end of Super Metroid, when a baby Metroid gives its life to Samus in order to allow her to defeat Mother Brain.  In a continuation of the story, Samus wakes up in a quarantine unit of a hospital, and some rather uninspired voice acting ensues.

Get Flash to see this player.

Metroid: Other M ships on June 27 in North America.

Update: The footage has been removed from Youtube, but this is the Internet, and the footage can now be found at The Metroid Database

Here, Chris uses his best material on NOA's David Young (himself an owner of one of the best tattoos ever), in a shameless attempt to become a Nintendo Jedi.

He also took a brief moment from signing autographs to do a photo shoot for his Photo Dojo fighter.
