Wii U System Update 5.2.0 Released
« on: September 29, 2014, 09:44:18 PM »

All you need to know is...folders!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/38622/wii-u-system-update-520-released

The latest update to the Wii U brings the inclusion of folders, among other interface changes.

The design and layout of the HOME Menu has been updated. Folders can now be created in the Wii U Menu to hold and organize software icons. A Download Management icon has also been added to the Wii U Menu.

There are also changes to the Quick Start Menu. It will now display when the Wii U is powered on from the Wii U GamePad TV Remote. Options have been added to Power Settings that allow users to hide certain software from the Quick Start Menu as well.

Changes to the Nintendo eShop have been implemented. This new update disables usage of characters not used when redeeming Nintendo eShop cards (such as O, I, Z, etc.)

The usual stability and usability updates are in full effect as well. A video showing a tour of what's new can be seen below.

Time to party like it's 2012!

One gripe (aside from the 2 years too late thing) is that you should be able to choose an icon like the SNES/NES logo or a character icon. Heck why not let users draw their own icon with the stylus or use stamps?

Every time I see one of these I keep expecting Wii Mode to be gone, and Wii stuff to show up on the same menu as Wii U stuff, like how 3DS handles DS and DSi stuff. I'm just amazed that, two years later, we're still stuck with the weird, uncomfortable hack that is Wii Mode.

I'm sick of seeing the Health & Safety app or whatever you wanna call it, and the parental controls. I wanna see an update to get rid of these eye sores. Until then i'll be creating a folder called "Crap"

You should probably stop expecting that, because I doubt it'll ever fully happen. I could see some more improvements to that system, with a smoother experience for Off-TV play or the ability to use Wii U controllers in place of Classic Controllers, but it seems pretty unlikely that they'll fully integrate things at this point.

Until the New Wii U.
Which honestly I buy if it fixed the UI Speed and made TVii into what was promised.

Pretty sure that's technically harder to implement than what Aero Leviathan was asking for.

Maybe, but I think history shows that doesn't really have any bearing on the way Nintendo does thigs. They already made Off-TV play sorta kinda work in Wii mode, which doesn't seem like it'd be that much easier than what I suggested.

The only reason I can think of why they'd do it the way they did after integrating things on 3DS is some misguided attempt to alleviate control confusion, which isn't a factor with DS and 3DS. They segregated it the way they did to prevent confusion, which in usual Nintendo fashion actually make things way more complicated than they need to be. Maybe I'm wrong, though, and there's a different crazy explanation.

Having download management on the GamePad without pressing Home is a really good improvement. You can much more easily see when something is being downloaded or find where to check on progress.

Not sure how much others use Quick Start, but being able to suppress system apps (like TVii and such) is also great for that menu.

Folders are obviously long overdue, but they help so much that I may be more likely to buy a hard drive now that I can keep the channels better organized.

I completely agree with Aero Leviathan, and adding folders might even be a precursor to floating Wii Mode channels to the Wii U menu. (In other words, Wii Mode would be automatically started when you click one of the channels that require it. We'll see if Nintendo can figure out how to pass the channel selection through that tunnel so you don't actually have to navigate around Wii Mode at all, unless desired.)

I don't have enough digital stuff to care about folders, but I think the menu may be faster now, unless it's just my imagination.

Maybe I'll make a "rubbish" folder to place all the useless icons like "Health and Safety" and "Wii U Chat."

As for Wii Mode, I always thought that it exists the way it does for two reasons. One is to ensure 100% compatibility and execution, and two is security reasons to quarantine off homebrew. The Wii is different from DSi so I don't think it could be set up exactly the same way, even something like a passthrough might be risky from Nintendo's view.

But hey, it's still a lot easier than playing any PS3 game on a PS4, right?

Also the new home menu is hideous. I mean the folders are a bit jarring compared to the other icons on the Wii U start screen but by god the new home (or suspended software screen, Jesus Nintendo learn how to name things,) is a hideous mess,

And it's even worse when software is actually suspended.

Rip OG home menu, you will be missed.
