I may be a bit of an extremist with my line of thinking but I think this approach will work because I believe Nintendo is dead in the home console scene and I really don't think they'll ever be a major factor in it anymore.  The industry and the home console market has gone in a direction that is basically the complete opposite of the niche Nintendo has put themselves in.  I've stated this before but Nintendo's biggest problems are that they are Nintendo.  For some reason or another, 3rd party games have never really sold well on their platforms.  Putting out equal hardware to the other two will not fix that.  Everyone, consumers and publishers, have their preconceived notions of what and who Nintendo are.  Even with better hardware, consumers will still think Nintendo is inferior to Sony and MS's systems and publishers will still think their games won't sell.  I don't really see how Nintendo can change any of that.

It is what it is and I think Nintendo is trying to find their slice of the overall pie now.  They currently are trying to look for a particular segment of the market they can lay claim too and build from there as apposed to trying to compete with the other 2 major players in the market they are dominating.

Loving the discussion this thread has brought.  Looking at the debate you both are having, I'd have to say that I think there is probably some misunderstanding on either/or both of your accounts.  SmallSharkbigbite, I think where you're going wrong is in pitting this hybrid system as a competitor to the PS4 and XBone.  The Hybrid system will be in a funny place where you can't really compare it to the other home consoles.  My interpretation of BlackNmild's idea, and correct me if I'm wrong BnM, is that in its essence, its basically a portable which just happens to be powerful enough to be able to provide a home console experience when at home and when need be.  The bulk of its success will come from its handheld titles as the 3DS is now but it'll allow Nintendo a venue to release its few and far between home titles without the need of having an actual home console to develop and support.  It'll be more powerful than the WiiU but nowhere near a PS4/XBone.  Given we don't believe Nintendo will ever release a home console as powerful as their current gen counterparts, it stands to reason that they shouldn't bother with a home console for the time being as it'll never compete directly.

Again, this will always vary depending on the company as some developers (Nintendo) choose to sacrifice some graphic fidelity for a better gameplay experience while others don't.

I disagree. They both sell you hardware experiences. SonyMicrosoft sell you powerful cpus and gpus. The most obvious benefit is great graphics. This can benefit gameplay with great physics engines or allowing you to place more items on screen. It doesn't ever hurt gameplay but doesn't necessarily get used by developers for gameplay items.

Nintendo sells you touch screens and motion controls. Their goal is to find the next big tech and make a profit on it before it becomes mainstream. Sometimes it benefits gameplay (Wii Sports Wii Fit) but most of the time it hurts traditional gameplay experiences(since that is the default setup) and the traditional market doesn't take Nintendo seriously anymore.

I believe giving credit to Nintendo prioritizing gameplay over graphics because of the Wii is false. It was a profit grab and it worked. I dont see how Mario or Zelda were better with motion controls. I think it's your bias that Nintendo is better for the game industry and thinking what they are doing is right.

Sorry, I should've been a little more clearer in the point I was trying to make.  I wasn't referring to hardware design but more so software design philosophies.  This was more of an issue during the previous generation on the PS360.  Developers often sacrificed framerates and other glitches in order to squeeze out a little more juice out of the graphics.  That was a design decision on their part prioritizing the graphics slightly above the gameplay.  No matter what the guts of the hardware, these developers will always take this approach.  Nintendo on the other hand, always seems to look to establish a steady gameplay experience and then try to squeeze as much graphics as possible without taking a hit on performance.  I'm sure if Nintendo were developing on PS4 and XboxOne, that design choice will still be the same.

Check this article out in which Super Mario 3d World was analyzed technically, it helps better describe the point I'm trying to make regarding Nintendo's approach to game design.

All you've done is prove my point.  I'm not arguing the quality of games in relation to how they are marketed.  All I originally stated was that games now are more flash than substance and that approach is emphasized in their commercials.  Since graphics were so basic in the NES and SNES generation, the commercials showed you exactly how the games were as apposed to now where your often shown strictly cinematics or set action pieces.  Regardless of what message the commercial is trying to portray, you saw exactly what the game played like.  The commercial you just showed had all gameplay in it.  FF7 is the biggest offender of what I was touching upon.

I would say games back in the 90s were 50/50 gameplay to graphics, maybe a slant more towards graphics if that makes you feel better.  Now the ratio has been slanted heavily towards graphics over gameplay as evident by games releasing with subpar framerates and other graphical glitches, all of which are a result of the developer putting more resources into getting that much more out of the graphics as apposed to having a better consistent gameplay experience.

Again, this will always vary depending on the company as some developers (Nintendo) choose to sacrifice some graphic fidelity for a better gameplay experience while others don't.  Some choose to market their games different also, depending on the game and who they are trying to sell it to.  There's really nothing much else I can say about this so I'll just leave it at that.

I don't get it... You people want a hybrid handheld that connects  to the TV through a console box. Isn't that what the Wii U already is, just in reverse?

In a nutshell, yes, but its about the affect it would have of taking that approach that brings about benefits.  A hybrid system will let Nintendo concentrate on supporting a single console as apposed to spreading themselves thing with 2.  They'll save money on R&D, and producing 2 systems.  Allowing them to concentrate on a single console, coupled with the vast amount of developers they have in house, they'll easy be able to fill out a release schedule without the help of 3rd parties.

I'm only speaking for myself here but I think the home console market has left Nintendo, or Nintendo has refused to change to it, however you want to see it.  I don't think Nintendo will ever be spec to spec with the other 2 in any generation here on forward.  I've stated my reasons for believing so, if you care to read it just check a few of my posts in this thread.  I think it'll be a lost cause to try and compete as a stand alone home console for Nintendo.

did you just "quote" me and yet summarized what I said within the quote?  That's not word for word what I said.  Regardless the point is the same.  I was gaming during the NES and SNES era and of course developers are always going to look to push graphics to get you to bite as its the first thing you see.  The difference from then and today is that back then, you got what you saw.  The commercials were all gameplay.  A lot of commercials now are either CGI, quick time events which look bad ass, or action scenes from views you'll not be gaming from.  Graphics have advanced to the point now that the games don't look too far off from the CGI trailers but still, its misleading.

It's kind of funny how the sales of the Vita never stopped japanese developers from supporting it. Here's the number of planned releases (not counting download-only stuff) for each platform in japan.

Vita 128
PS3 108
PSP 74
3DS 63
PS4 40
360 31
WiiU 16

Damn that list pisses me off.  I decided to look at the installed base of both the WiiU and Vita.  According to VGchards, the Vita has an installed base of 6.62 million whereas the WiiU is at 4.32 million.  The Vita is ahead at the moment but still not enough so to warrant so much support.  Given Vita games are lower scaled PS3 projects it seems, why can't these developers double down and release ports of these games onto the WiiU?  The WiiU should be able to handle them and it'll just be another market for them to try and make sales off of where there is less competition as a result of WiiU's software droughts.  I know these games won't be considered "next gen" on the WiiU but sh*t, any support is better than nothing.

Here's the link to the numbers I stated.
http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/

EDIT: Holy &*&*, looking at that list again, how the hell is the PSP still getting that much support?  How come everyone was able to move from the DS to the 3DS for development yet some companies are still working on PSP games?  I know the PSP has a large installed based but so does the DS yet no one is lining up software for that.

I can see why MS and Sony might be hesitant on that option but I wonder how come this hasn't been done with PC games.  It'll help the WiiU as you said and it'll only just add to the PC audience.  There will always be the argument of the PC gamers owning those playing on the WiiU but I think that typically only applys to professional gamers and not those who simply game online for fun.

I'm not blaming them exclusively for the WiiU's problems but there is merit in what I'm saying.  We live in a world where the Jersey Shore, Toddler's and Tiaras, and other television "shows" of the like are yearly hits, obviously you can make an argument the consumers need fixing.  This is no different in the video game market.  The big sellers are always GTA, CoD,or any of usual big budget affairs.  Those games are good in their own right but it doesn't make them any better than what Nintendo has put out on the WiiU.  Fun is fun regardless, if the consumer can't see or appreciate the fun in Mario World, Pikmin, the Wonderful 101 then they are uninformed and/or have their own prejudices towards those games or Nintendo in general.

All Nintendo can do is make the games they know how to make, more of them, and advertise them better but I think that will only go so far.  The games they make don't seem to be appreciated by and large by this type of market.  They can advertise Mario 24/7 on every channel and I still don't see how it'll make your typical CoD player want to pick it up.  It might make someone else who is on the fence with gaming or returning to gaming but, IMO, it won't do much to make the majority of the market jump into Nintendo's camp.

This isn't the 90s anymore where gameplay trumped all as most games looked somewhat the same at that time.  The industry has been commercialized, again, gone Hollywood, its all flash now.  That's why most trailers don't even show gameplay anymore outside Nintendo's own.  I'd even go so far as to say FF7 was the earliest attempt at this.  It got millions of people to buy the game off the trailer alone to then find out the game looked nothing like it in action.  Anyways, let me get off my soup box lol, I've said enough.

I don't know if Nintendo can do anything now to fix this situation.  Its as if the consumers need fixing now.  The WiiU has good software now and is a really good system (IMO), moreso than the PS4 and Xbone at the moment.  The market has really changed, the industry has official gone Hollywood and Nintendo has become IFC.

Speaking of these niche games that never get released oversees, I wish they would at least translate them and put them on the Eshop so those that want it can download it and they don't have to worry about physically making the disks, distribution, and stock not selling through.

Thanks Spak-Spang, my biggest issue with my reasoning is that it almost makes to much sense lol.  Nintendo rarely ever does what we deem to makes sense so who really knows what they'll come up with.

What are the chances that it's getting a translation as its getting developed to cut down on the time we need to wait to get it?  The WiiU needs a major 2012 and X would fill a nice niche in the WiiU's lineup for the coming year.  With Zelda a probable 2015 title, X should be slotted for next year.  Here's hoping for a worldwide release :) lol.

Man I so wish that DX game was released here in the US as a single player game :/.  As for Japan, little by little Nintendo is slowly adding to that userbase.  Time for them to go out and buy some of those older releases now and add to those long term tallies lol.

Miiverse is probably one of the most innovative concepts of this generation. Nintendo Games are still pretty good which is saying a lot.

I have to heartily agree.  Miiverse is the ONLY online discussion forum that I'm comfortable letting my 7 year old read (Sorry NWR forums).   I think if Nintendo pushed it, along with the fun of drawing , parents can really embrace it.  And, as a human being, I find the the one of the least offensive forums out there.   A place on the internet without name calling and flame wars?  Who knew?

But another hurdle that Nintendo would have to overcome is the fact that most parents (sorry for the sprinkling of pessimism here) simply don't give a crap what their kid is doing and definitely won't take the time to really participate in their child's consumption of media.  I mean, I do.   I know what fairy books my daughter is reading, and the difference between the fashion fairy and the birthday fairy.   I will watch and discuss the new My Little Pony animated movie with her (the one where the ponies turn into teenage girls).   And I when I see her grandfather stick freakin' Candy Crush in front of her, I will rush in with my DSi and saying, "Hey honey, check out this pre-installed version of Brain Age Math Express" because I don't want her to rot her brain with that freemium crap.

It's a matter of education and branding.   Nintendo should, and I think very well can, teach parents that there is more quality to there games and more value to their products than PS4 and XBox One.   Not that Nintendo is the Fisher-Price of gaming-- rather, that Nintendo is like the Whole Foods of gaming.  Because we all know that if there is any distinguishing feature of Nintendo games, it's that they have a ingenius emphasis on fun and play that other games sacrifice in order to emphasize cinematic grandeur and violent spectacle.  Which has always been tough for Nintendo, because cinematic grandeur and violent spectacle is really, really attractive.

It's a tough sell, sure.   It's marketing that targets the highest denominator.   It's marketing that aims not for what's easy to do, but to inspire consumers to do what's hard by convincing them that hard is worthwhile.   But organic foods have done it, for the most part.   And tough is still shy of impossible.

I tip my hat to you sir, brilliant post through and through.  My only issue is that with that approach, your catering to a small minority of people.  You said it yourself, parents barely keep track of what their kids are consuming.  The market is driven by flash and violence with only a few people who can appreciate the special touch that Nintendo provides with their games.  Hell, I'd even go so far as to say that that's the current WiiU install base lol.  Anyone who has already purchased the WiiU is a Nintendo diehard or someone who can really see the value in Nintendo's games and the system.

To end in a more positive note though, I too am in love with my WiiU.  I struggle to grasp how people can complain about the WiiU and its lineup.  Unless your still a teen and have lots of time on your hands, the WiiU lineup is sufficient enough for the average adult IMO.  I myself have just finished Ass Creed 4 and have yet to play the new Mario game, Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, Duex Ex, Rayman, and let alone finish ZombiU which I purchased at launch lol.  Now my dilemma is worsened given I also have a 3ds and a PC so my gaming time is spread pretty thin lol.  Again, I'm aware this only applies to me but, how much games do people need? lol

Damn, there is too much to touch on in this thread and I'm too lazy to start quoting everyone lol

Basically, I'm in BlackNMild's camp with this hybrid design.  I know some have a fear of weakening 1 division over the other but I think Nintendo in the home console scene is near its end.  The market and industry for home consoles has dramatically changed, gone Hollywood is what I would call it, and that is just not, and probably never will be, Nintendo's scene. Nintendo is already 1 generation behind in specs and I don't see them ever matching the other 2's specs in any generation from here on out.  There are many reasons for this that I've mentioned before but I'll summarize briefly.  1.  Nintendo will never fund and fully utilize those high end specs.  2.  The 3rd parties who do put in the effort and money for AAA releases will shun Nintendo in favor of the other 2 as their games, for one reason or another, never seem to sell on Nintendo home hardware.

A handheld with a 1080p display and specs above a WiiU is ideal in that those still developing handheld games will still be able to do so and, as BnM I think stated, those that want a TV experience type of game will still have that option.  Hell, 3rd parties are nearly gone for Nintendo in the TV experience "genre" if you would call it that.  Its basically Nintendo the only one doing anything major for their home console.  With this hybrid, you'll get all your portable games and Nintendo would still have a venue to put out there major home releases like mainline Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games.  Nintendo has spread themselves too thin between their 2 major consoles.  Given they get little to none 3rd party help with the WiiU, they have to provide all the support they can for it while also doing what they can to keep the 3ds in the position its in.  We complain of Nintendo's large gaps in release, well a hybrid system will let them concentrate on basically one hardware.  All their developers will be able to fill in their yearly lineup a lot better when just concentrating on one platform to support.

As for Nintendo killing off the WiiU early, aka Dreamcast?  I don't see that happening at all.  Its ridiculous to even think of it.  Nintendo could put out a system even more powerful than the PS4 next year and it'll all be for nothing.  I mentioned this in another thread but Nintendo's problem now is their image and public perception.  That'll always trump whatever specs they have.

I think Nintendo will pull whatever slim profits they can muster out of the WiiU and treat this generation as their practice round to iron out their development techniques with HD hardware and to streamline their handheld and home console developers into one well oiled machine (in preparation for their hybrid release in a couple of years)

I'm also in the camp of BlacknMild and Spak-Spang in I believe Nintendo is headed towards merging their 2 tier strategy.  Given they are now trying to unify their development process throughout the company I believe they are looking to have their handheld developers and home console developers on the same page so their work can easily apply to one side or the other (both).  In another 5 years, I believe they'll be the tech possible to create a handheld system we all speak of.

SPECS:  With this approach, you can completely forget Nintendo staying spec to spec with the other 2 players unless they too are taking Nintendo's approach.  I personally think Nintendo will always stay 1 "generation" behind spec wise as 1: they don't need it themselves and 2: it'll be too expensive to match MS and Sony's next home consoles while still remain portable.

NAME:  As for the name, I think the Wii brand is dead.  They tried to further build on it with the WiiU but its clear that the Wii crowd is long gone; probably moved on towards tablets, mobile games, are not gaming anymore, or quite possibly still using their Wiis.  I would love Nintendo to just keep it simple and follow the number system the others use.  Call it the N7 (Nintendo 7th gen entertainment system).  Its easy to remember, rolls off the lips, and should look good as a logo (I can't help but think of Mass Effect lol)

Here's an image for reference for those that don't know

As for the base console, I think they should release one that looks sleek, small, and modern.  For the initial launch, play off the nostalgia of your fan base and release a limited edition, only for initial preorders, NES skinned model.

Here's another image for reference, though the base console will probably be much smaller.

EVERYTHING ELSE:
I like everything else you have all stated in regards to accounts and the VC, slap that all in and this complete package is sold (at least to me lol).

43
Looks like everything was as expected unfortunately.  Nintendo will Nintendo that's for certain.  Nintendo is just so unpredictable.  We get this announced at the VGX and have something like X announced through a simple Nintendo Direct months back lol.  Its like they lull you into a comatose state and then shock you back into reality when you lease expect it.  Time to go back to playing Pokémon lol.  Look forward to November sales report to come out for the craziness to pick up in the forums again lol.

44
gta 5 with exclusive dlc

And by dlc you mean Mario, Luigi, and Peach outfits for your 3 main characters lol.  You know Trevor will rock that Peach outfit and still look demented lol.

45
Mario Paint lol, damn, that's taking me back a ways lol.  That game was magical for me lol.  Since I didn't have a computer at the time of that release, Mario Paint was just something else for me.  I still remember me and my friend making animated pornos to the backdrop of some shoddy music we made lol.  Oh, and who can forget the fly swatting game.  Nintendo is pure gold lol.

EDIT:  See, now you made me go look it up on youtube to kickstart the nostalgia lol.  Just listen to that music man.  Its like I'm a child again lol.  Looking back, I'm getting some deep Earthbound vibes from the majority of the menu music and sound affects.

46
I don't know about pikmin on that list lol but can you imagine how butthurt gamers will be if Nintendo would to take this approach lol.  People flipped their lids when Beyonetta 2 was announced as an exclusive lol.

47
If we're getting Shenmue 3 then you have to have Skies of Arcadia in there too.  Its criminal that we haven't had a sequel for that yet.

This just got me thinking, since Nintendo put money out to get Beyonetta 2 developed, I wish they would go out and fund sequals for other forgotten cult classics.  Secretly I just really want another mainline Suikoden on a home console.  Come on Nintendo, throw Konami a little cash and make this happen.

48
The only problem I see with Beyonetta 2 is that we've seen full on video of practically a complete stage.  What more can we see for that game.  X would be the most logical in my eyes given that it has yet to get a proper reveal.  From what we have seen, the game looks ready for a full on blow out trailer.  A nice cinematic trailer showcasing the name, characters, theme, and release date is perfect for this show.

49
I just thought of the most epic trailer they could show for Zelda.  This may be a bit offputting for some Zelda fans because its a complete departure from what we typically know from the series.

Imagine if Nintendo, UbiSoft and Woodkid teamed up to create a Zelda trailer similar to Assassin's Creed Revelations E3 trailer.

Imagine the trailer showing Link being captured by Ganon and being brought up to hanged in front of Hyrule Castle.  Sheik can be seeing walking amonst the crowd incognito.  Right before Ganon has Link ready to take the plunge, Sheik pulls off her cloak to unveil a bow where she proceeds to shoot the rope attached to Link and quickly throws Link a sword.  The trailer ends with Link and Ganon clashing swords all the while Woodkid's Iron is playing throughout the trailer.

Here's Revelation's trailer for reference for those that haven't seen it. (my fav trailer of all time)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMsbMK9Odoc

Here's the original video for Woodkid's song

50
I've never seen it before but I'm not up to speed on all Zelda logos, specially on attire lol.  Looks sweet though.

Here's one last nugget before I head off to bed.  Hope to find this thread a blazing with convo tomorrow after the late night dinner spread I've left you all lol.

In a response to someone asking whether the reveal is of a new game or one we've heard of, here is what Geoff Keighley had to say
