Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 264: All Good Things...
« on: October 25, 2011, 10:01:22 PM »
I love the N64.  I wasn't necessarily going to buy it day one.  Embarrassingly I had actually planned on waiting until Crusin' USA came out and I buy it then with a wheel peripheral for that awesome arcade experience.  That was until I got a videotape from Nintendo Power showing Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64 and Shadows of the Empire (plus a teaser reel at the end).  Mario especially sold me and I had to get the system right away.

I didn't have a real job at the time (I was 16 when the system came out).  I don't remember exactly how I got the money (mowing lawns, borrow some, other odd jobs) but I had enough at launch.  But I couldn't find a system for a couple of weeks.  I was able to get Mario right away so I had the game before the system and that was kinda weird.

Even though the N64 wasn't able to fill all my gaming needs (I had to get a PS1 eventually), it was still a great system for me.  My library of N64 games is one of my largest (larger than my SNES, DS and any non-Nintendo system).  And honestly I don't really own any bad games either.  I think it gets more crap than it deserves because many people remember it as the system that sent people defecting from Nintendo.  And those defectors maybe didn't play many of the great games that did come out on the system.

And a few games I wanted to mention that weren't talked about on the podcast.  One of my favorite games was Extreme-G.  It wasn't particularly difficult, but it looked great and had awesome music.  Killer Instinct Gold was mentioned, but not talked about.  The music alone was great (love Orchid's song).  It was one of the few fighting games I enjoy and had a lot of fun mastering the combos.

The last games I'll mention are some racers.  There's the Top Gear games (I was a big fan of the Rally ones).  There's also World Driver Championship.  Which looked great and was really engrossing.  It was kinda mentioned in the same breath as Gran Turismo.  It was certainly the closest thing the N64 had to GT, but it wasn't about car porn.  It just had good graphics and good racing.

TalkBack / Re: Tetris: Axis Review

Actually I loved Game B in the original Tetris for Gameboy.  Blocks didn't appear at the bottom.  You had to clear a certain number of lines and depending on what difficultly level you chose there would be garbage stacked to a certain height.  It was kinda like coming in and fixing someone else's worst game of Tetris ever.  It was great because it made you think quick.

I would say I don't remember a better "Game B" or other mode in a Tetris game until Push Mode in Tetris DS.  Survival is pretty cool in Axis too.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo to Offer WiiWare Demos
« on: October 14, 2011, 11:37:36 PM »
Here's an epic bump since Nintendo put up some more demos out of nowhere.  One is a game for those of you with a balance board and zapper.  It's called Horizon Riders.  I have neither and the game played kind of crappy with just a wiimote.  Another game is Fast - Racing League.  I already bought it some time ago.  It's kinda like Wipeout without weapons, or the newer F-Zero games without taking down other cars.  It's pretty and plays well, but I didn't find it too exciting.

The other is a game called 3D Pixel Racing and I quite enjoyed it.  It's motion controls only and it felt really over sensitive at first.  But after a lap or two (and used my Mario Kart wheel shell for the first time ever) it was really fun.  For only $5 I would've already picked it up if I didn't just buy a hand full of games on WiiWare/VC.  I have points left over though so I'll probably get it sooner or later.

I've noticed it has got some really bad reviews.  But from what I've read they all seem to have problems with the controls.  I wonder if they're trying to play like ExciteTruck with the dpad and button facing the ceiling as opposed to Mario Kart where the dpad and buttons face you.  Because that's how I tried playing at first and it was really bad.  But like I said switching to the correct position and even using that wheel shell really helps.

Has anyone else tried this game out?

Like I said before I wasn't sure if I was going to get River City Ransom if I won.  But I decided to do so because there are a handful of VC/WiiWare games I've been meaning to buy as well.  So I also got Castlevania Rondo of Blood, Contra Rebirth and the second LostWinds game on top of RCR.  Stacking more games on my backlog... I was going to have to add points anyway.

Here's what I got.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 27:58
2. Mario's Picross - 23:04
3. Netflix - 16:57
4. Puzzle League Express - 14:04
5. Advance Wars: Dual Strike - 13:30

One game that might have been in there is 999.  I marathon'd the game and I think I only closed out of the game once.  But for some reason it says I played it once for two hours.  Maybe after twelve hours it rolls back to zero?

None of these games really excite me.  I love beat 'em ups, but never really cared for the River City Ransom style.  I haven't played the original, but I have played the games heavily influenced by it.  And I don't really like having to grind and build levels just to make the game fun.

I've honestly know basically nothing about Custom Robo and for whatever reason the games have never interested me.

I mentioned the Mario Tennis games in the nomination thread so I voted for that game.  But kinda like Custom Robo, I've never had much interest in it.

I may buy Mario Tennis if it wins.  I'll probably get River City Ranson on VC if it wins since that's so cheap.  But I'm not sure about Custom Robo.

Some games I'm interested in playing that could make for interesting conversation.  Castlevania: Rondo of Blood -  It's on the VC, PSP and maybe someone out there could talk about Dracula X.  Mega Man X - Maybe there's been enough conversation about this game on recent podcasts already?  Another idea would be one of those Mario Tennis games mentioned on a recent podcast.  I haven't played any of them, but they sound interesting.

The GameCube game is my favorite in the series, but these games play best on a handheld.  So I think this new game could be great.

I don't have any issues with the button mapping as it is.  Obviously more options would be better, but I have no problems playing Mario just like on the NES.

I also think one of the reasons Turtles in Time stays as such a well remembered game was that not only did it look just like the arcade game, it was very much improved.  The SNES version added levels, added bosses, more fitting and interesting bosses as well.

A few SNES games of note not mentioned:
Rock 'n Roll Racing - Kinda R.C. Pro-Am with rock music.
Metal Combat: Falcon's Revenge - I'm not surprised nobody mentioned a super scope game, but this one is great.
Tetris Attack - My favorite puzzle game until Meteos came along.
Killer Instinct - I'm not generally a fan of fighting games, but I love the combo system in this series.
Mario Paint - Making your own music and doing your own animations, loved it.
NBA Jam - Yes there are good sports games on the SNES.  NBA Jam was the only one I was really into, but I remember NBA Live being a big deal as well.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, fellas, but I'm not so sure I remember seeing any indication that the forthcoming 3DS Virtual Console release of Bionic Commando was any but the original Game Boy release and not "Elite Forces" for the Game Boy Color.

I don't know if it's bad news.  Sure Elite Forces is great, but the GB version is quite good too.

Critical: Increases the likelihood of critical weakspot shots

So even if you put the cross hairs directly on a critical spot there's still a chance you may miss?

I basically love/hate this game.  Well hate is kinda hard of a word.  But when all of a sudden there's a couple smiles right in front of you and one coming around a corner and you miss a shot you're screwed.  You can only take a couple of hits with most of the characters and you're dead.  True there's not much of a penalty for dying other than doing some backtracking.  But the combat is kinda all or nothing so I find dying to be rather frustrating.

I bought this game when it launched.  I played until I got to that one room in the first level where's there's like three or four smiles.  I don't like dragging a cursor around on the screen in general.  I think that's a big reason why I've never cared for first person shooters.  After dying at that part a few times I put the game down and didn't pick it up again until a few years ago.  I played to the same spot and almost gave up, but I pushed through and generally enjoyed the game through to the end.

And in the end is basically where I realized I did kinda love the game.  I loved the graphics, the voice/sound and music.  The crazy story was awesome.  I didn't really understand the whole political angle, but I loved the story of the assassins and their connection.  And getting criticals, especially mutliple criticals in a row is a great feeling.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 253: Daddy's Home for Dinner
« on: August 09, 2011, 11:21:26 PM »
On the Fire Emblem topic.  I love the series and own all the games that have been released in the States.  I started with the first one on GBA.  It would be great if that ended up being one of the Ambassador games.  It was my favorite until I played the GameCube game.

Not only did the GC version let you save mid-battle (so you didn't have to start at the very beginning if you lost someone), it also had a system to help you level those weak characters that can be such a pain to do so on the battlefield.  There's also some other minor stuff I think they fixed as well.

The Wii game (which I'm playing right now) 1ups the GC version by letting you save whenever you want in battle.  I'm not done with it yet, but so far I still liked the GC game more.

And the DS game was a bit of a letdown for me.  The prerendered characters totally lacked the charm of the hand drawn sprites that were in the previous GBA games.  It was somewhat improved over the original Famicom game (I'm pretty sure they implemented the weapon triangle which didn't come until later in the series).

But I don't think the DS game would be a bad choice for someones first FE game.  If you think you'll play them all I think it might be the best to start with.  But I'm pretty sure they all have decent tutorials so you could really start with any of them.  Well, except the Wii game.  It's best to play the GC game first since it is such a direct sequel.

I've rented both Battalion Wars games and didn't find either all that interesting.  Star Wars was a fun game, but I have no real desire to play it again.  I am kinda interested in Wario.  I love the character and I love Treasure, but I rented the game back in the day and wasn't too impressed.

I think Killer 7 is a great game.  And I think there's a lot to talk about.  But I'm going to vote for Baten Kaitos: Origins.  I loved the first game and always meant to get around to buying and playing Origins.

I thought Risky's Revenge was a serious improvement over the first game.  At least when it comes to the overworld.  The map is kinda useless, but getting from one place to another wasn't a pain.

The dungeons in the game are great, but the overworld is terrible.  Shantae walks so slow and the enemies pop up right on top of you every two seconds.  It is such a trudge to get from one place to another.

Not to be a hater, but the game isn't even that good.  It'll probably be worth whatever the VC price will be, but no way $100+.

TalkBack / Re: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Radical Rescue
« on: June 17, 2011, 10:54:15 PM »
As much as I loved the turtles when I was young, I never got this game until I was much older.  At first it was hard for me to play with the outdated map system and whatnot.  But eventually I gave it the time needed to have a proper play through.  I liked it quite a bit, but I couldn't get passed the boss rush.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Game Gear had any games worth playing.

Someone's going to argue with this, which I welcome, because I figure there's probably an exception to that but I'm too lazy to do the research myself, so I'll just throw out the bait and let it come to me.

I never owned a Game Gear, so I don't really know of any myself.  However there are three Shining Force games on the handheld (only the second of which made it to the west).  And I love me some Shining Force, so I'd definitely buy those without question.

TalkBack / Re: No GameCube Support For Wii U
« on: June 07, 2011, 08:44:01 PM »
The question for those of us who keep their old systems is which is better for Gamecube games?  The Wii or a Gamecube?  This is assuming you have transferred your WiiWare and VC games to the WiiU.  So basically either system is just for GC games.  The reason I ask is that it seems silly to have a Wii just for GC games.  But I don't want to pay more money that I need to get a component cable for my GC (assuming it has the port), while I already own one for my Wii.

I got a DSi for Xmas last year with some Mario games pre-installed on it.  Those apparently cannot be transferred either.  I can live without the games/apps for the most part, but I still play quite a bit of Dr. Mario.

Another good session of Perfect Dark multiplayer. Although it seemed a little less lively with the absence of James for most of it... maybe just a little slower then last night. Either way it was fun but doesn't really change the way I see the game. It's still full of issues but with a large party, still tons of fun to play. :D

Yeah James acting as MC was definitely a plus for me.
