"First time ever in the computer games industry," claims the CEO of Some Research & GameVision Europe. Also, the Wii exhibits a 50-50 split between genders.

 At the NLGD Festival of Games, Sean Dromgoole, CEO of Some Research & GameVision Europe, delivered the keynote speech and unveiled his research in the demographic use of video game consoles across the continent.    

Analysts may be unnecessary to confirm that the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 continue to appeal to the traditionally heavy male demographic, but Dromgoole's analysis of the demographic use of the Nintendo systems turned up historic results.  "The Wii is almost fifty-fifty male and female usage" he said, "and the DS, for the first time ever in the computer games industry, [is] a primarily female platform on which to game."  He also concluded the DS is "very much a young person's platform."    

However, Dromgoole spotted a potential problem: "Some developers who make games don't like to hear that - but that is the truth of the matter: it is a primarily female platform."

So this is somewhat contradictory to what they said last week how its mostly "core gamers queueing up to buy Wii". How can "core gamers" be traditionally young men, and the same people racing to buy it according to nintendo, yet it's a 50/50 split?

Just because core gamers queue up doesn't mean casuals can't buy the system in droves. They just don't stand in line like that.

Maybe the "core gamers" lining up to buy the system, are doing so for their moms, grandmas, sisters, etc? Cuz we were smart enough to get ours an launch day, it's the rest of the world playing catch up.

I hope this has zero effect on game development.  The DS is obviously already capable of attracting women with the types of games it has, yet you just feel someone like Ubisoft is going to use this as an excuse to make a bunch of crappy girl games.  Not that girl games have to be crappy but, come on, they usually are.  There's a reason videogames are seen as more of a boy's thing; usually when anyone tries to make a game for females it ends up being a really bad Barbie game.

The games that are popular with females are usually fluke stuff designed for gamers in general that happen to catch on with women like Tetris or The Sims.  The second you specifically TRY to target females you make sh!t.
