3rd Annual NWR Live Podcast Telethon for Child's Play
« on: November 25, 2012, 12:24:31 PM »

We're doin' it live, for the kids, all over again! UPDATE: The full recording is now available -- all 9 hours!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/sitenews/32097

We're back with another mega-podcast for charity, all performed live with many opportunities to interact with the NWR crew and our special guests. Please consider supporting this event with a generous donation to Child's Play -- all money goes directly to the charity (all we do is track it through a service recommended by Child's Play). When certain amounts are reached, we'll unlock another hour of exciting live content! Check out the incredible results of the previous editions of this event -- in 2010 and 2011.

The show is over, but you can hear the magic with the three-part recording. Subscribers to Radio Free Nintendo will get it automatically; otherwise, just download with the links below!

Part 1 - Wii U, Metroid Prime, Eurocast (Enhanced AAC or MP3)
Part 2 - Radio Trivia, Nintendoaire, Famicast (Enhanced AAC or MP3)
Part 3 - NFR's Wait Wait, 3DS Report Card, Shenanigans (Enhanced AAC or MP3)

JIGGAWHAT: An epic Nintendo/gaming-themed live audio "podcast" telethon
JIGGAWHY: For Child's Play, a charity that provides toys and games to sick kids
JIGGAWHO: Nintendo World Report staff, special guests, and you!
JIGGAWHEN: Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 12:00pm Noon Eastern (9:00am Pacific, 5:00pm GMT) until...?
JIGGAWHERE: Right here, so bookmark this page! Check back soon for the audio stream, live chat, and donation link.
JIGGAHOW: Magic of the Internet

Here at Nintendo World Report, we've long been supporters of Child's Play, the fantastic charity that provides toys and games to hospitalized kids. If you're not familiar with Child's Play, check out the official website and listen to Jonny's RFN Special interview with Mike Krahulik, co-founder of the charity (and Penny Arcade), way back in 2007. So, when our old friend Karl Castaneda brought us an idea for doing a special, live-streaming podcast to support Child's Play, we got excited. Not only can we do things live that don't make sense in a recorded show, like real-time listener interaction, but the lack of editing means there are fewer constraints on how long the show can run. Then we thought... why not do it telethon-style, all day long? It's been a great success so far, and this year we're hoping to raise more money than ever for this excellent charity!

***If you are new to NWR podcasts, please be advised that the show contains explicit language. We're doin' it for the kids, but the show itself is for grown-ups.***

Content Program and Fundraising Goals

(Note: Schedule and guests are subject to change before and even during the event. Each hour of content will be unlocked when the corresponding donation goal is met. Fundraising goals are totals; i.e. all previous donations are counted toward the amount. Pacific time zone is three hours earlier than the times shown below!)

12:00 EST - Wii U Hype Train w/ Brad Shoemaker, Jeff Kalles, and Jon Lindemann (Free)
1:00 EST - A Decade of NWR's Game of the Decade: Metroid Prime feat. Garnett Lee & David Ellis ($500)
2:00 EST - The Eurocast: It Came from Across the Sea ($1000)
3:00 EST - Radio Trivia Live -- name that game music to win prizes! ($1500)
4:00 EST - NWR Connectivity presents Who Wants to Be a Nintendoaire? ($2000)
5:00 EST - The Famicast: Live from Japan featuring 8-4 Play ($2500)

7:00 EST - 3DS Report Card w/ Craig Harris and Billy Berghammer ($3500)
8:00 EST - Shenanigans w/ your live calls! ($4000)

Special guests include:

We will make every effort to obtain a clean recording of this live event, but due to the complex technical nature of doing so, we cannot guarantee a recording will be available later. Please plan to attend the event live if you want to be sure!

Things are pretty tight at work lately and will be for the rest of the month, but I think things will have died down by the 10th so I'll be able to make it on the show in time for our segment if we get that far.   :D   I look forward to hearing another massive podcast.  ;D

Very excited for this! Is started listening to the show about 2 months before the first live Telethon back in 2010, so this is something I always look forward to! Hopefully I'll be able to participate in some form during the call ins. Good luck guys, let's smash last year's total!

Very happy to hear that you're doing this again!  I've always enjoyed these; it's also near-perfect timing for some nerdy Wii U hype.

Look for an update later this week with more content plans, a partial list of guests, and a tentative (incomplete) schedule. Generally, the goal this year is going to be $500 per hour, with an overall goal of raising $4000. It is a modest increase from last year, which I believe is achievable through wider promotion and awareness of the event. Naturally, we'd appreciate everyone's help in that regard. ;-)

At least you've done some podcasts before, Broodwars. I'm making my podcast debut on the Eurocast. Live. To hundreds of people. Terrifying.

Other than that, you guys are in for a treat. I was a listener for the past two telethons, so it's interesting for me being on the other side now. Needless to say, we've got some great guests lined up. I won't say anything, because it's all still up in the air, but if you listen to a lot of video game podcasts, you might be hearing a few familiar voices.

If you haven't caught the Twitter and Facebook announcements, here's a quick update:
- Donations are live, so you can donate early if that's more convenient.
- The topic list and schedule are now up on this page. This can and will change as we continue to nail down all the details leading up to the event.
- Special guests are being announced one by one. We've already got 8-4 Play, Craig Harris, Phil and CJ from Player One Podcast, and Brad Shoemaker from Giant Bomb. And we're not done announcing guests!

All of this goes up on the telethon page as soon as it's announced or changed, but you may not realize the page has been updated if you don't follow us on the social networks. So I'll try to post about the big announcements here. Look for another huge guest on Friday, and we'll have prize lists going up over the weekend.

As always, we would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word about this special event.

Good news, everyone! We've already passed $500 in early donations (which is AWESOME!) and that means we'll definitely be doing the second hour of the telethon: A Decade of NWR's Game of the Decade, Metroid Prime. And I'm even more excited to say that Garnett Lee, who practically invented gaming podcasts as we know them, will be joining us for that segment! Garnett is a personal hero of mine, and I've wanted to get him on RFN for many years. This is going to be even better. And he has specifically requested that we take some live calls during that segment, so you can talk directly with him about Metroid Prime (and maybe some related things).

PayPal is definitely the only way to donate through our event. I checked the CP website, and it refers to a text message option, yet the information on how to do so seems to be missing. However, they do sell Child's Play t-shirts and greeting cards with proceeds going to the charity, so you might have more options through that web store. Of course, PayPal lets you use a checking account or credit card, and they don't take a cut since Child's Play is a registered non-profit. The ChipIn donation tracker is the only recommended method for collecting donations per Child Play's event guide. However, you can send a check directly to Child's Play via this address:

Child's Play
123 NW 36th Street
Suite 210
Seattle WA  98107

If you do so and want to use the canceled check as a receipt for tax purposes, their tax ID is 20-3584556.

I decided to check this topic because it was on top of the page so much and I just noticed that it is the same day that Season 3 of MLP:FIM airs only a few hours after the premire airs. I see the first page me being offered to be on here to talk about the show but I probably can't since I don't have skpe and or a mic. Also dispite my loud voice on the internet I have a quiet one in real life.

Besides the content of the podcast shouldn't matter much because this is for charity and you should donate regardless.

For the record, I do plan on donating something along the lines of Wii Shop/DSiWare/eShop downloads, as I historically do - however, I'm waiting for the end of the updates this week to see if we're lucky enough to get a gifting feature in the eShop.

But no, I won't be donating a Wii U. ;)

To elaborate, this is what will happen:

Upon reaching $5000, which is $1000 more than our 100% goal, I will release the URL of the "lost" drunkcast from PAX East 2011 which, up until now, has only been circulated among the NWR staff for our own amusement. This podcast is the origin of the term "Red Velvet" and has the original telling of the accompanying story, along with the reactions of the rest of the crew as I tell it.

This is actually a way better deal for you guys since, in addition to hearing the original telling of Red Velvet, you'll hear an additional hour of other drunkcast stories, including musings on:

- The firing of Tim Rogers
- The origin of our poutine obsession
- Many many fancy beers (this episode doubles as an unofficial Rough Draught)
- Using a toilet in Zero-G
- Noise complaints from the hotel management
- Machete mishaps
- Drunk rambles from Lindy, Neal, Jonny, Mike Gamin, Lauren, Mike Sklens and, of course, myself.

So start pushing those donations! The minute we hit $5K, I'll release the URL into the chat. It's already hosted and ready, so all we need is the cash.

Um, Red Velvet was AWESOME. The best part was that I thought it was gonna be the story about Karl getting head in a public restroom that he brought up early on so then when the real Red Velvet started I was completely surprised. This story has been hyped for a year (for me at least, maybe longer for others) and I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with it. Fantastic.

And TJ, Jonny mentioned on the show that it's only going to be a direct download on the site - it's not going on the feed.
