Runbow

Don't walk, but sprint to your local Wii U eShop for a wonderful time.

If there is one thing I champion, it’s the local multiplayer games of the world. It’s important to laugh and scream with your friends while having a good time. When I played Runbow for the first time at E3 I quickly learned how strong the title could perform in a group setting. Though, the true test was a getting a group of people together at home and seeing their initial reactions. When I tried this experiment everyone seemed to quickly grasp the concept and it has become one of the first games we boot up when we get together. Runbow is easily one of the best multiplayer games I played throughout 2015.

Why is Runbow so good? Well, it starts with a simple concept. Players use two buttons, the control stick or D-Pad, and a lot of skill to survive a barrage of challenges. The main mode sees players running from left to right with the goal of grabbing a trophy before anybody else. That is easier said than done, considering the background will be constantly switching colors that make platforms appear or vanish at will. It’s a constant struggle to come out victorious, but at the same time it’s easy to understand. Because of this Runbow is a game that everyone can enjoy.

The previously described mode can keep you going for hours, but the joy is that the package is way larger than that. You can partake in arena battles, the Color Master mode (which uses the Wii U GamePad), and the Adventure mode. The latter is absolutely packed with missions that you can play alone or with friends and working for the best times feels like a true race to the finish. I have not even mentioned that you can play this with up to nine people locally, which is true insanity when you clutter all around one television screen. Players with less people around them can battle others online, so it’s easy for everyone to experience the joy that Runbow multiplayer offers.

Runbow just brings an unprecedented smile to my face. The music and colorful look constantly gets me to play for just one more round. Before I know it, I’ve been playing until 2AM and nobody really minds it in the slightest. They are plenty of unlockables to keep players going for a solid number of hours and... you play can play as Rusty and Commander Video. There is just a great selection of content that 13AM Games perfectly fit into a single package. Pure class.
