Mewtwo should really make a comeback in the next Smash Bros. games.
Playable Character Dream
Who: Mewtwo
A Pokémon researcher discovered a new Pokémon, dubbed Mew, in Guyana, South America. It wasn’t long before a Mew was captured and brought to Cinnabar Island in the Kanto region. A scientist then worked on creating the ultimate Pokémon by recombining Mew’s genes. Approximately seven month’s after its discovery, a Mew gave birth to a Mewtwo within the Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island.
Nearly seven months after Mewtwo’s birth the scientist began to lose control of him. Mewtwo, more powerful than anyone could imagine, broke free and severely damaged the mansion. Mewtwo eventually hid inside Cerulean Cave in the Kanto Region.
Why He Deserves a Spot:
As many of you know, Mewtwo was actually a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee. To the dismay of many, Lucario in Super Smash Bros. Brawl seemingly replaced Mewtwo. It’s time for the ultimate Pokémon to make a return in Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS.
Mewtwo was the original superpower in Pokémon and appeared in the first games of the series. He was, without a doubt, the most broken Pokémon in the original games sporting a type with nearly zero weaknesses and the highest base stats of any Pokémon. In fact, Mewtwo was so powerful that the introduction of Dark Pokémon in the first Pokémon sequels, Gold and Silver, seemed like a direct nerf to Mewtwo himself. Even with the introduction of new weaknesses, Mewtwo has remained an incredibly powerful Pokémon in the main series games.
There is also no better time than the present to bring Mewtwo back to the Super Smash Bros. series. Mewtwo was one of the starring Pokémon of the latest movie. Additionally, Mewtwo is once again obtainable in the newest Pokémon games, X and Y. Mewtwo was also given two new Mega Evolutions in these games.
Bringing Mewtwo back would probably be a little less effort than adding a completely new character since he already has a move set from Super Smash Bros. Melee. However, that move set should definitely be tweaked. For starters, Mewtwo’s Disable attack should probably be replaced with his more recently introduced signature move, Psystrike.

Mega Mewtwo X & Mega Mewtwo Y
Mewtwo’s new Mega Evolutions should also be added into the gameplay as Final Smashes. Once Mewtwo obtains the power of the Smash Ball, I envision two stones appearing, one to the left and one to the right of Mewtwo. These stones are, of course, Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y. The player can then choose one of the two as their Final Smash.
Becoming Mega Mewtwo X could increase Mewtwo’s weight, representing his stronger defenses, and also raise the damage of his physical attacks. I think most of Mewtwo’s psychic Smashes would be changed to physical attacks in this from in order to give them the canonically correct extra damage.
Evolving into Mega Mewtwo Y would come with increased speed and extra strength of energy based moves. The downside to this would be that Mega Mewtwo Y would be lighter and thus more easily knocked off the stage than regular Mewtwo. Imagine Mega Mewtwo Y quickly being able to lob Shadow Balls at opponents and gaining amazing psychic throwing strength.
Of course, having to choose between the two Final Smashes would give the player some sort of strategy to think about. Mega Mewtwo X would probably fair better if the player has already taken a decent amount of damage, while Mega Mewtwo Y would excel if the player is fresh. Of course, these new evolutions wouldn’t last forever. In the name of balance they would probably wear off after 15 to 30 seconds.
Overall, the time is right for Mewtwo’s return. A whole new generation is learning what a powerful creature he is, and those older fans already get filled with nostalgia upon seeing this menace. The odds of Mewtwo returning in the next installments of Super Smash Bros. seem high, especially after the reaction we got from Sakurai at E3. Pokémon fans, cross your fingers.

Bonus Dream: Alternate Stock
Alternate Stock mode is something I really wanted to see in Brawl. Sadly, that dream never came true. The good news is my dream can once again be realized in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.
The concept of Alternate Stock is simple. The mode would function like regular Stock matches in Smash Bros., however the players can pick a different character for each Stock. So if a player dies as Mario they could then come back as, say, Samus. I have two ways this could work, Predetermined and On The Fly.
In the Predetermined Alternate Stock mode each player chooses the characters they will be using based on the number of lives chosen. So if they are playing a five stock match the player will have to pick five characters. Upon the players death they will then come back as their next character. It could also be possible to choose which of the remaining characters they would like to play as next by rotating through the list, located by their damage meter, by using a controller’s shoulder buttons.
On The Fly would work a bit differently. The players would choose their character upon starting the match as they are already accustomed to. Once they die though, they would then have 10 seconds to poke the next character they want to play as on the Wii U GamePad. Yes, this would incorporate the GamePad in a functional way in Smash Bros. This could also be done on the 3DS Touch Screen as well.
Overall, I think this mode could add some amazing variety to the gameplay. It may also be something the Smash Bros. competitive scene would be interested in trying out at some of their tournaments. Sakurai, make it happen!
