LostWinds

Post-Game

by Neal Ronaghan - May 12, 2010, 1:00 pm EDT

This week's Extra Life is focused on LostWinds, just in time for its two-year anniversary.

LostWinds is a beautiful game, and seems to be structured and presented like the playful 2D platformers of yesteryear. The wind controls, which use the Wii Remote in interesting ways, make it feel new, though there is a certain amount of imprecision with the pointer controls.

The controls work well, but they're still frustrating at times.

You might be frustrated trying to guide Toku up a series of platforms, but the effect that the pointer has on the environment and the beauty of the world around you make the frustration worth it. However, it is always obnoxious when the little hero has to pull himself up to practically every ledge.

Despite my minor quibbles, I'm sold on this game. It's one of the finest looking WiiWare games this side of NyxQuest, and one of the better looking Wii games in general. I still prefer NyxQuest, but LostWinds is definitely one of the premier titles on WiiWare.

Sorry LostWinds fans, I still like NyxQuest better.

Due to my time constraints (large backlog, doing this feature every week, reviewing games, writing about games, etc.), I'm probably not going to rush out and burn through this and pick up the sequel. However, I plan to work my way through the first game, and sometime down the road pick up the sequel, which is supposedly even better.

Did you enjoy the feature? Any advice? Criticism? Did you love LostWinds? Do you think it is better than World of Goo? Let us know in Talkback
