It's our last episode before the 5th Annual NWR Charity Telethon, so of course we brought in organizer (and former RFN host) Karl Castaneda to preview the big event. But first, he leads New Business with quick impressions of Woah, Dave!, the new game from the Bit.Trip guys under their new studio name, Choice Provisions. Karl also reports on the highly praised Shadow of Mordor from other consoles. James follows with extended impressions of Level 5's Fantasy Life, and it turns out that he and Gui are having quite different experiences with this massive game. Lindy came in a bit late, but we figured he's already suffered enough punishment by playing Lair, the ill-fated PS3 launch title from Factor 5. Guillaume takes his full turn next, trying the original Bayonetta (remastered for Wii U) and a neat little 3DS eShop title called Super Little Acorns Turbo. Jonny completes the cycle and ends his hunger strike (ha!) thanks to the long-awaited, never-certain release of both Gargoyle's Quest 2 and Demon's Crest on Virtual Console.

The second half of our show begins with Guillaume's now-annual report from Nintendo's holiday preview event in Canada. He got to play Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and even both versions of Sonic Boom. Following that is a brief discussion about Nintendo's first revelation of their "Quality of Life" business -- it's a sleep monitor! Does this make any kind of sense for the company, and more importantly for us, will it relate to video games at all? There are few answers but plenty of speculation, for now. Finally, Karl brings us home with a point-by-point preview of next weekend's big telethon. It's our biggest event of the year, with all hands on deck from Nintendo World Report, and you should be part of the action! Just bookmark the official telethon page, donate early if you can, and be there on Saturday, November 8, 2014. You can talk with us live, win great prizes, chat with fellow Nintendo fans, and support a truly wonderful charity organization. Oh, by the way, our very first live segment on that day will be a Listener Mail round-up, so send in your questions now and let us know Saturday if you're available to do it live on the show!

This episode was edited by Guillaume Veillette. The "Men of Leisure" theme song was produced exclusively for Radio Free Nintendo by Perry Burkum. Hear more at Bluffs Custom Music.

Oh gosh this is so meta

Can you please try again and then tell us the exact error, if it still doesn't work?

I just tried both the direct download link and the MP3 subscription feed, and both worked fine for me. So it's not an obvious error (which is usually the case when something goes wrong). If you're still having trouble, we'll need more information to track down the problem.

It works now, just wasn't there when it came up.

I started laughing my ass off when James came to the realization that SOnic Boom was conceptualized as a TV show first. Actually, I've known about it since before Sega announced it, since Dave Polsky (Previously wrote for South Park, Scary Movie 2. Now writes My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic episodes) talked about the project at a Brony convention, which... is honestly kinda hilarious on many, many levels.

This episode also had a REALLY good new business. Not just for the pure sexiness that is Demon's Crest, but it was kinda great hearing about Lair and Gui's Bayonetta experience.

I'm so darned jazzed for the telethon...! I really don't have that big of an income, but I just donated what little I had left in my Paypal account after my recent batch of Commissions was used to buy a capture card. actually, I streamed on Twitch the drawing I did to reply to Johnny's Miiverse post on Demon's Crest and Pokepal totes followed me on Miiverse!

Bayonetta 2 takes place after Bayonetta. They are episodic, but there are several references to Bayonetta in Bayonetta 2. It's not like a part 1 and part 2 of the same story though.

The world in Fantasy Life seems to plainly suggest that you play several different life classes. There are obvious fishing spots, mining spots and trees to cut down throughout. I'm only 15 hours into the game, but I haven't seen much confusion yet.

You know, I can't really blame you, Gui, for skipping the story segments of Bayonetta.  The story is pure campy nonsense, which was overwhelmingly appreciated by me, but it really struck me as peculiar given how the game is perceived.  I mean, you have Nintendo trying to push Bayonetta in Playboy and asking for her Link costume to be more revealing, but, seriously, the only people who should be physically attracted to Bayonetta are those who like their junk stepped on.  I can only hope that Nintendo figures out what they have their hands on and manage to get a Bayonetta challenge in the next season of RuPaul's Drag Race, because, honestly, it's self-explanatory who she appeals to when you spend five seconds looking at her.

Also, as daverhodus said, the stories do link together, and the second game features some big reveals that will make sense on their own, as the story manages to be self-contained, but they very heavily leverage the player having already made a connection with the characters.

I'm disappointed to hear that the BOP for this year's telethon will be Wing Commander-I had really hoped for either The Wizard or Pokemon: The First Movie (when you mentioned 1999 I really thought that was going to be it). I'm sure there's plenty to talk about with Wing Commander (to be fair, I've never seen it), but I think either of the ones I mentioned would have been better in terms of discussion and a fit for the audience. Can we add another stretch goal for the telethon and keep you guys for another hour?

Pokemon never came up in the planning. I saw it back then, fell asleep half way through. We ruled out The Wizard partly because our friend Chris Johnston recently had a long review of it on Back in My Play.

What about Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat? All right, I'll stop giving you guys ideas for next year.

I did hear that BiMP episode a few months back, but I feel like you can never talk about The Wizard enough (at least I can't  ;D ).

Think of it this way, that's one of the 'GOOD' Pokemon movies.

Oh I forgot to mention. By one of the "good" pokemon movies I mean one of two. The other of which is the third one.

Oh and don't get me started on that 8th one ;)

The confusingly terrible video game movie you meant to say is Double Dragon. Easy mistake to make, imagine Street Fighter the Movie without the experienced (note, not "good") actors.

Let me put it to you all this way.

when I see that box and see the bad acting Chimera that is Freddy Prinze Jr, Saffron Burrows, and Matthew Lillard's heads side by side, I let out an internal scream. My dad is a wing commander fanboy, to the point that he even loves Privateer 2: The Darkening... and even he knew this movie was shit when we were leaving the theater. It's not like my dad has excellent tastes in movies either. he really loved the Lone Ranger, even though that movie is about a man who is too cowardly and naive to do what is necessary for justice. Also, Johnny Depp being Johnny Depp.

My point is, Wing Commander is so bad that they can't even be bothered to spell the character's names correctly (There's a scene where they spell admiral Tolwyn's name "Towlyn"). The DVD box also incorrectly credits Tcheky Karyo, when actually, it features Jurgan Prochnow as a typecast Submarine Space Ship Captain. The best thing I can say about Wing commander as others have said before... I can at least pretend I'm watching a Das Boot/Scooby Doo crossover if I do a doobie snack first.

Note: Clexyoshi is not condoning the use of illegal substances to enhance one's enjoyment of a bad 1999 video game based movie. Say no to drugs. Say no to Wing Commander.

I believe Karyo is the mysterious captain of the Diligent who turns out to be something different. Jurgen Prochnow plays the racist(?) second officer of the big carrier spacecraft.

Pilgrimist... and actually, looking at the IMDB page, Karyo plays the part of Paladin and the DVD box credits him for being that commander that Prochnow plays.

Also, Tcheky Karyo is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE downgrade from John Rhys-Davies. Just like David Warner is a gigantic downgrade from Malcolm McDowell. I'm not saying Warner is bad, but like... man, McDowell chewing the scenery in Wing Commander 3 and 4 are my favorite parts about those games when I used to watch my dad play them...? well, I suppose that, and the dynamic between Mark Hamill and Tom Wilson, which... Freddy Prinze and Matthew Lillard couldn't touch with a 50 foot pole, no matter how much they co-star in She's All That.
