Jon is back this week, with a vengeance! It's a Lindemann Blow-Out as he delivers new impressions for Killzone 3 (Wii-style), the brilliant Fluidity, Monster Hunter Tri as a husband-and-wife experience, and his new punching bag, New Super Mario Bros. Wii -- did you know that it's harder than Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts? James came prepared as well, delivering tons of info and thoughts on the upcoming Atlus DS game, Radiant Historia. Is it really comparable to Chrono Trigger? Could it be the last great RPG for DS? Find out on this episode!

The newest Virtual Console game in North America is a classic called Faxanadu, and Jonny explains why it should appeal to fans of Zelda II. He's also got a report on last year's Crackdown 2, a game that is both really fun and completely pointless. Greg bring it home with a surprise import (for him), Soul Bubbles. This little-known DS game was victim to poor marketing at its launch, but Greg explains why it's worth tracking down a copy.

In Listener Mail, we address your concerns on important issues of the day. There's a pair of letters about 3DSWare and the May launch of eShop (coming to Wii?). A new listener inquires about the difficulty of Donkey Kong Country Returns and whether we're interested in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. We cap off this episode with a discussion of eye strain, vision problems, and tangentially, 3DS marketing.

YES!
I love when you manage to post it on sunday night so I can listen to it on monday while getting to work. thanks greg!

jimwood27February 27, 2011

gotta give some love to New Super Mario Bros. Wii here since none of you guys had any for it.  I loved it and found it more forgiving than the older games, even on co-op.  My brother and I co-oped the entire game (all star coins and levels) and I found it much more enjoyable that way than just single player.  And this is from someone who, even though I have played every Mario game, is not exactly the best platform player out there (despite it probably being my favorite genre).

SupaKirbFebruary 27, 2011

Oh My God! I love your podcasts! The show was hilarious!!!!! I'm a little embarrassed to say this... but I still don't know all of your names... regardless, that bit about one of you sucking at NSMB Wii, and the rest of you taunting him, hilarious! Oh god....

Edit*

Hey... I don't have an I-pod or I-tunes... So is it possible to download this thing for a standard MP3? It's a creative zen. I went to the mp3 link.. but I don't see a place I can download the actual file.. Just curious, because I would love to take you guys on the go! I hope that doesn't sound like an implied kidnapping... of course you're all grown men! So it wouldn't actually be kidnapping right?.... I'm just gonna shut up now...

randomflashbangFebruary 27, 2011

Yes :D spread the good word of Soul Bubbles! That only reminds me that a few episodes back you guys had an email asking about other interactive type adventure games (tangent I realize) and I've been meaning to send in a write-up about a DS game I found tucked in a Gamestop awhile back called 'Thereisa.' It is a sort of adventure/maze game with inventory based puzzle solving and story that could rival 999 for 'wtf in horror'ness. There is a second story unlocked after you beat the first one two that I haven't gotten too yet so there is a lot of bang for the $8 I spent. Good times thus far. I'll send off a formal shoutout once I get to the second tale.

You can try right clicking on that MP3 link, then clicking on Save Target As, but that shouldn't be needed. I 'unno...you've probably already figured it out by now. The 'Download in MP3 Format' link is working fine for me, so keep at it!

Lookin' forward to the Radiant Historia talk. I've been meaning to 'test it out illegally', but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm currently ploughing through Black Sigil after giving up on Nostalgia. Both are extremely traditional RPGs, with the former lending its art style almost entirely from SNES classics like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6. I'd say the game would be pretty damned epic if it weren't for the absolutely horrid, batshit insane amount of random encounters. TOO MANY!! But James already knows this! *Hugs*Digress!!! I'm doubting The Historias'll get a release down here in no-game's land (a.k.a Australia,) given the DS is on its last legs and RPGs are fairly niche I guess. Small markets. Not worth the annoyance of hyping myself up for something that might not come out here. There's always importing I guess... So yeah, piracy! Cool story, bro.

OH! I was totally going to import a US 3DS and be done with it, but a local pre-order deal was too good to pass up. The RRP for the 3DS down here is $350US/AU, right? Right! Some stores are offering deals, selling the console with a bonus crappy accessory pack for $300. I managed to snag a 3DS, along with my choice of either that Rabbids platformer, Rayman 2 3D, or that Advance Wars-style Ghost Recon game. All for only Tree hundred dorrar! That's pretty on-par with the US price right thar. I picked the Rabbids game by the way, as I played Rayman 2 on the N64 and thought it was medicore at best. Better than Tonic Trouble, but had nothing on the Nintendo or Rare platformers.

...Better than Earthworm Jim 3, too!

Fiendlord_TimmayFebruary 27, 2011

This probably isn't really the right place to post this, but whatever. I was listening to your conversation on Monster Hunter 3, and I started to feel like I should pick it up again. If you guys are still playing it, I think it'd be really cool to play online with you guys. If you guys are down for that, let me know and I'll post whatever information is needed.

Lindy, if you hadn't already resigned as site director I'd be calling for you to do so now for complaining about the difficulty in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Listening to it now. Jon, world 3? Some levels are hard, but stuck on world 3?

Nintendo has admitted to problems with the Nintendo Shop Channel, so I am sure the eStore will be better. Even with it not coming out until May, who cares? The retail 3DS games are more than worth getting it at launch IMO.

When I first started out, I said that Jonny is the guy with the "regular" voice, Jon has the deeper voice, James has the higher voice, and Greg is the guy with the accent. ;D

TJ SpykeFebruary 28, 2011

The other podcasts have staff with more distinct voice. For example, Hal and Pedro have voices that you won't get confused with someone else.

BTW, the Layton clone from Namco Bandai is called Treasure Report: The Mechanized Legacy and the story is from the same guy who did Okaminden and 428.

SupaKirb, every podcast article has a direct download link for the MP3 version. You can also use the MP3 feed link to subscribe in your Zune software or whatever. Also, I'm going to try submitting RFN to the Zune store so more people can find it. Let us know if you still can't get it to work (sounds like you heard at least this one episode).

I have the Zen as well. I just do what Scatt-Man said...or pull it right off the server.

Because I can.

Just to be clear, I have to frown on this. I'm just obligated to do so, and to remind the rules regarding piracy. With that out of the way:

I played Nostalgia at E3 2009. I was excited because all the press material I had in hand looked really great, but when I finally got hands-on I felt disappointed. I was promised Skies of Arcadia (one of my top 10 RPGs) and I got something totally unrelated. I never got to Black Sigil, it just never managed to get on my radar.

I'd say Radiant Historia might be the best RPG I've played on DS. For those of you unaware, I've played...let's just say a few. The funny thing is I've mostly avoided (not by design, just by happenstance) your Final Fantasies and Dragon Quests, but I'm absolutely resolute that this game is amazing. I finally finished it ("finally" on an RPG, after a week. I know) last night. Right this very second I'm listening to the piano soundtrack that came with it.

After I finish the review I'm going back to complete some more side quests and aim for the best ending. The game is kind of in a weird place right now, there's no guides anywhere on what you have to do to get some of these quests, so often times you just have a branch on the timeline dangling and no idea what it leads to or how to get there. I think I'm at 189 of 236 timeline spots and 35 hours (in 7 days).

Really, this game is fantastic. I don't give scores before I write the review, so I can't say what I'll give it.

Oh, and no random battles. You also gain powers that make almost all non-boss battles avoidable (although you wont want to all the time).

Sometimes he replies to about 10 of them at once. Usually they're all a week+ old and his reply is just "LOL" or "Yeah".

No honestly, the Podcasts are really enjoyable. Much better then another Nintendo website... who shall remain nameless. Anyways, looking forward to actually taking you guys on the go now!

Also, I now want Radiant Historia based on the description given to me on the podcast, it sounds soooo cool!

Cool episode. I'm glad you're continuing to champion Fluidity. I'm on the final chapter, and it's been a wondrous experience from start to finish. If anyone has trepidations about the flick jumping, the key to being able to reliably pull it off every time is momentum. At the beginning, I was having some trouble, then realised what I had been doing wrong. If you build up a good amount of speed before the jump, it works just fine. That, plus the liberal use of the Attract feature to stop the pool from scattering, ought to do the trick.

With PAX East looming, I'd like to make one request for the miscellaneous podcast content. Radio Trivia Meets Drunkcast. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

NWR_KarlKarl Castaneda, Contributing EditorFebruary 28, 2011

Well, TYP WILL be at PAX East, so there's always that possibility.

EnnerFebruary 28, 2011

On Monster Hunter 3 and the series as a whole: Don't like the potion drinking animation? Don't get hit! Kidding aside, the item system in the series from usage and quick slots to inventory and crafting have frustrating limits that you have to deal with to get further in the game. I don't doubt that removing those time-wasting animations would make the game more sensible to more people, but would it take away a bit of the "you need to know what you are doing 100% all the time" charm the series has built up. Or perhaps it can do what the online beat'em up Vindictus does in that drinking a potion on the move reduces its effectiveness by a percentage.

On one-use keys: Have there been western games that also have one-use keys? Did Dungeons and Dragons have a rule like that at some point? Maybe it isn't a Japanese thing but an old design aspect of all RPGs.

ShyGuyFebruary 28, 2011

Don't worry, I've got more!

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k302/shyguy70/lindymeme3.png

Having just recently re-beat Super Ghouls n Ghosts, I can't say that I agree that Super Mario Bros Wii is easier than SGnG, but I will admit that I can beat the game much quicker than NSMBW, although I think most of that is the length of the game.  Also, if you're like me, you've played SGNG enough to regain your timing pretty quickly after a break, and it's easier to maintain the correct rhythm in SGNG than NSMBW, as there always seems to be something put intentionally into a level to break your rhythm.

I'm surprised more people aren't comparing Radiant Historia with Majora's Mask.

I remember someone on the podcast mentioning that they'd like Super Meat Boy on 3DS, and while it hasn't been confirmed to be that title, Team Meat has confirmed that they are working on a 3DS title.

GoNintendo? That podcast is such a mix bag. Sometimes it's cool, and other times it's boring as hell. But I do love the site and community.

Kytim89March 01, 2011

Super Meat Boy may actually be coming to the 3DS after all because Team Meat has got their hands on the 3DS development kit. I would love to have a 3D Super Meat Boy.

New Business In A Nutshell would be better if I had access to Photoshop, because I could post NSMB:Wii with trollface for Jon.

Here's two others:

If by that, you mean Drunkcast where TYP is the new James? I get annoyed with drunk people very quickly. Then again, maybe that's why you're requesting this.

Also, I have to agree with greybrick that based on the conversation, Radiant Historia does sound a bit like Majora's Mask.

It is a bit like Majora's Mask, although the subquests involve more time travel.

So I just listened to this episode and what the hell!!! New Super Mario Wii hard!!???

I guess gaming is a diminishing skill since first he had trouble with Mario 3 and then New Mario Wii. Gesh.

This old episode had me rolling. Im having fun going back and listening to the old ones. Though sad that when I post is years later after it happened.
