After all these years, SMB3 still stands out as a classic.
For what seemed like ages, Nintendo promised that Super Mario Bros. 3 was coming to the Virtual Console. Months passed, and as the anticipation grew Nintendo was quiet concerning a release. It seemed like it would never see the light of day on modern consoles, but we’re finally here! Super Mario Bros. 3 is now on the Wii U Virtual Console. So now the question remains: is SMB3 one of the best games of all time? Interesting question to say the least, but I can say this: Super Mario Bros. 3 is a classic game that stands the test of time.
The game is split up in eight different worlds. You’ll travel through sand, sea, air, ice and lava in order to reach the Princess and encounter a myriad of challenges along the way. The level design in the game has drastically improved over the previous two Super Mario Bros. games.
The variety presented throughout is staggering compared to the previous two games. As far as graphics go, well, they’re dated, but they’re simple and have a consistent aesthetic. I did notice some weird graphical glitches throughout gameplay in the Wii U version of the game (not sure if this was in the original version or not), but it was hardly an issue regardless.
Super Mario Bros. 3 is a blast. Everything I remembered about the original has remained true decades later. The music, the worlds, and the gameplay remain something that Nintendo should be proud of to this day. Super Mario Bros. 3 was the pinnacle of the NES era, and it’s well worth the price of admission.
