X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse

by Max Lake - March 22, 2001, 3:54 am EST

Activision is making an X-Men game with over 40 characters, two gameplay modes and support for 1-4 players. Find all about this upcoming Mutant X-travaganza!

A little over a week ago, Activision let it be known that it was working on an X-Men title for Game Boy Advance. We tried to get in contact with Activision though eventually got details through the grape vine concerning these new titles. The X-Men game is titled "X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse" and will feature over 40 X-Men characters (wow). In comparison, Capcom's Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has 56 characters total, with many of the Marvel characters being X-Men characters. When you realize that the 40 plus characters will all be dedicated X-Men, any X-fan would stand up and take notice. It is uncertain how many of the characters will actually be playable.

The game will feature two modes of play. One is a side-scrolling story mode and the other is a fighting game Versus mode that features play for one to four players. The Story mode has the X-Men heroes warped to an alternate universe and now must confront versions of many of their familiar friends and foes who are fighting to stop them. How exactly this will be portrayed is somewhat unclear.

The "Reign of Apocalypse" title suggests that the alternate universe could be the "Age of Apocalypse" which was part of a story line years ago in X-books. Then again, thinking about it I believe the "X-books" have featured numerous alternate universes, timelines and dream sequences… So who knows what setting the game will feature.

One can only hope that Activision takes the same kind of care with these Marvel-ous characters as Capcom has in MVC2. Usually, games with the super hero license usually aren't very well done. However, Capcom's "Vs" series and Activision's own Spider-Man games have given us hope. So far, it sounds like Reign of Apocalypse is on the right track. Activision plans to release this game in the Fall and we're sure to see the game in action at E3.
