This week in Newscast, we find ourselves buried under a mountain of 3DS news.

In Whatcha 'been reviewing, we've got Scooby Doo, Spiderman, Batman, Etrian Odyssey III, and that Owl game. We took your feedback to heart and have optimized our weekly downloads discussion. Will there be another My Notebook title?

Finally, join us in the newly-created Newscast Post Game as we chat about a little game called Minecraft.

Send us listener feedback at newscast@nintendoworldreport.com, and follow us on twitter!

In the post game I referenced my efforts at making a calculator in Minecraft. I watched this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGkkyKZVzug and am now completely discouraged.

Woohoo newscast is live, and I'm downloading now. I really wanted to hear your guys opinions on 3DS news and such, and was getting antsy. I tried other podcasts out and it is hard to get into some, but  you guys I really clicked with the whole cast now and how the show flows. Your still not as great as RFN, but I'll say you guys are 75% as good as RFN which is still high praise. I just wanted you guys to know this. I used to listen to newscast because i was bored and I didn't care for it but over the course of the year the cast has melded well and I really look forward to each week.

I think its safe to say of the four crew members, Neal accounts for the entirety of our 25% deficit  ;)

I don't think there'll be a size problem for GBA games if they ever come to Virtual Handheld. They've already released the GBA versions of Earthworm Jim and Rayman 2 on DSiWare and managed to add features. Anyone know how much fridge space these take up on the DSi?

Also, you've nearly convinced me to hunt down a Scooby Doo game. Well played, gents.

From what I understand, Shaymin, Earthworm Jim for DSi was a version made specifically for that platform (including iPhone and iPod touch versions). Not sure about Rayman 2 though...

On another note, the Newscast is fantastic, guys. I look forward to it every week. Keep it up.

And Nathan, are you compressing the podcasts differently than they were being compressed before? Or something else significantly different? Whenever I have tried to play the last two episodes using my iPod (downloaded via the iTunes stream), I get 5 seconds in and then my iPod restarts. Haven't had this happen with any other podcasts... odd hey?

KDR_11kOctober 03, 2010

What game did you call a better Metroid game than Spiderman SD? "Solar Darkness"?

EDIT: You never played a flying melee game? I did, it's called Dragon Master Spell Caster.

Soul of Darkness- it is a DSi Ware game by Gameloft.

As tempting as that sounds....

^^^^ my eyes!

I'm having the same resetting problem. I get 10 seconds in and BAM - the iPod resets. :-(

I hate you.

Also, sorry when I said Soul of Darkness it may have sounded like Solar Darkness. I was trying to remember the name of the game and probably stumbled on the words.

greybrickNathan Mustafa, Staff AlumnusOctober 03, 2010

I am doing these in Audacity, compressing it to aac @ 128 kbps- which is supported by iPods.

I have tested it on two different iPods (Touch & Classic) and haven't had the resetting problem.

I guess I will look into what the possible problem may be, but understand that I don't know enough about the internal workings of an iPod to scientifically figure out what the problem is. I do know that we previously edited these in Garage Band- but the fact that it works off the iTunes stream on both of my iPods and my iPad is throwing me off the scent.

EDIT: Could someone with the resetting problem check what the runtime is in the iTunes description? Also, if you could try fast forwarding past the normal failure point to see if it makes it through. Thanks

That's a relatively painless screenshot of the game, you don't see the awful amount of texture stretching on the terrain there. I bought the game just for laughs and it really is a game you'd hand to Nathan.

The runtime claims to be 1:51:35.

Hm. Then it shouldn't be expecting to stop at :05 or anything- which could have been the problem. If it was an unsupported codec, it probably wouldn't have started playing in the first place, and wouldn't have worked on my iPods either.

I am having a hard time thinking of what the problem could be.

EnnerOctober 03, 2010

Ah, more MineCraft talk. I've heard a lot of buzz for it and might pick it up some time. After spending hours in building and tweaking aspects of Smash Bros. Brawl, mech labs, and emblem painters, MineCraft sounds like something that will be right up my alley.

FZeroBoyoOctober 04, 2010

Ah, the discussion on Minecraft at the end was quite awesome. I'm unfamiliar with it now but I may check it out after hearing you guys talk about it.

I also like how everyone referred to LotG:TOoG as "the owl game" because A. the title is too long or B. everyone's too lazy to say the full title.

One last thing: was Pocahontas for Game Boy actually quite good or were they just joking? In any case, another great episode guys.  :D

I'll have to listen to this on the computer itself...I want to hear Nate and Andy geek out about Minecraft!

NO!

That picture reminded briefly of panzer dragoon and I got excited.  Then  I cried when I saw gameloft.  Though NOVA was kinda fun.

Anyways great as always.

Hmmm.. I'm not sure what the deal is with the resetting, but what I can and will do is re-encode the files in Garageband, and hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Nathan editing the podcast is just a temporary situation while I deal with a particularly busy October.  Sorry for any inconvenience it's caused with the art being missing and the file acting up.  Hopefully it won't be permanent.

Okay guys, i re-encoded this episode.  Download again and give it another try.

TJ SpykeOctober 05, 2010

What about those of us who download it through iTunes? Will you have it so it will download automatically or do we need to manually download the new version from the website?

At the moment, you will have to redownload it.  There's nothing I can do on our end to force a re-issue of the file.  I will work with Nathan on some sort of fix for this.  Hopefully my re-encoding it does the trick.

What, you mean the screenshot of Dragon Master? God, no! That's not Gameloft, that's much, MUCH worse.

greybrickNathan Mustafa, Staff AlumnusOctober 05, 2010

So, after having purchased Shantae I have 800 DSiWare points left over and I am in the mood for another crappy game. Basically
I need some suggestions for the worst possible ways to spend these 800 points, excluding notebooks, card games and apps.

If the game has yet to be reviewed on NWR, all the better, because then I can ruin "Whatcha been reviewing" with it.  (which is why I am bringing it up in the Newscast thread)

Right now I am leaning towards the Petz Hamsterz game, or perhaps a farm game. The problem with Petz is that it costs the full 800 points. Some help?

CRYSTAL MONSTERS

greybrickNathan Mustafa, Staff AlumnusOctober 05, 2010

I guess I could use a Gameloft clone as a last resort.

EDIT: The problem with Gameloft clones is that they are usually competent, but definitely worse versions of what they are cloning. Usually, most stuff is so effectively aped that there isn't much to remark on, and you just end up wanting to play the real thing.

TJ SpykeOctober 05, 2010

Let's see, here are some DSiWare games with terrible review scores (I am not counting the various "Express"/Electroplankton games):

101 Minigolf World from Teyon (500 points)
Don't Feed the Animals from Electron Jump Games (500 points)
Mixed Messages from Activision Blizzard (500 points)
Hell's Kitchen Vs. from Ludia (800 points)
Disney Fireworks from Disney Interactive (800 points)

Andy Goergen and Nathan Mustafa are the devil.

KDR_11kOctober 08, 2010

If this was WiiWare I'd be torn between Dragon Master and Niki Rock 'n Ball.

Argh! Even the Mp3 version resets my iPod!

I still haven't been able to listen to this. :-(

So Shantae's a "crappy game" then?  If not, I think you may have wanted to word that a bit differently or risk incurring the wrath of Halbred.  ;)

KDR_11kOctober 08, 2010

No, "another" considering his review history.
