It's-a me! In addition, the first Genesis import title!

WII-KLY UPDATE: GREATEST GAME EVER ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL

Eagerly awaiting the arrival of Super Mario Galaxy™ next week? Can't get Mario™ out of your head? You and everybody else! To whet your appetite for all things Mario, Nintendo is offering a special treat on the Virtual Console™ this week. It's not just any game, it's Super Mario Bros. 3™ – considered by many to be the greatest video game of all time (for at least one more week, anyway). It's a must-have title on a week that also features the first Virtual Console import title for Sega Genesis and a fun multiplayer golf game for TurboGrafx16.

Today Nintendo adds three new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased via the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Remember when no one had ever heard of a Tanooki Suit or knew that Bowser™ had a clan of Koopalings? The game that made these things common knowledge is also considered by many to be one of the best ever made. Bowser and the Koopalings are causing chaos yet again, but this time they're going beyond the Mushroom Kingdom into the seven worlds that neighbor it. Now Mario and Luigi™ must battle new enemies, returning favorites and a new Koopaling in each unique and distinctive world on their way to ultimately taking on Bowser himself. Luckily for the brothers, they have more power-ups available than ever before. Fly above the action using the Super Leaf, swim faster by donning the Frog Suit or defeat enemies using the Hammer Bros. Suit. Use the brand-new overworld map to take the chance to play a minigame in hopes of gaining extra lives or to find a Toad's House where you can pick up additional items. All this (and more) combines into one of gaming's most well-known and beloved titles—are you ready to experience gaming bliss?

Alien Soldier™ (Sega Genesis, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older –Fantasy Violence, 900 Wii Points): As Epsilon-Eagle, you are an alien soldier who has been genetically engineered to produce maximum intelligence and strength. You were once a member of the criminal organization Scarlet, but when you decided to break from the group, you were forced into a showdown with Scarlet's new leader Xi-Tiger, who kills a hostage in his attempt to destroy you. Now it's up to you to take revenge against the bad guys in this side-scrolling action game! Choose from six different weapons and battle the bosses of Scarlet until you reach the final confrontation with the ultimate secret weapon!

Power Golf (TurboGrafx16, 1-3 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Power Golf sports a perfect combination of simple-yet-realistic controls and beautiful graphics. Swing away on 18 lush holes in one of three different game modes: the single-player STROKE PLAY mode and the multiplayer MATCH PLAY and COMPETITION modes. Enter tournaments as one of three different characters—beginner, intermediate and advanced. Wind strength and the slope of the green add extra challenges to each hole. Compete against other players in the standard NORMAL MATCH or ante up one of your clubs in the unique CLUB MATCH. Up to three players can play in COMPETITION mode, and a handicap feature is included to help novice players pull off breathtaking shots just like their advanced rivals.

Super Mario World is the greatest game of all time! Or at least my favorite Mario game. =)

shammackNovember 05, 2007

Well, I can already play Mario 3 on my SNES or GBA... but I can't play it on Wii yet, so I guess I'll have to buy it yet again.

KDR_11kNovember 05, 2007

Hah, Alien Soldier is only 800 points here!

Ian SaneNovember 05, 2007

Treasure is turning out to be the coolest dev on the VC with two long requested localizations as well as Gunstar Heroes. Now I don't know if they even make the call since they're not the publishers but still if you like Treasure the VC is a cheap and easy way to get some of their best stuff.

Super Mario Bros 3 is obviously a big release though since it's been widely available in some form pretty much since it first came out it seems routine for it to be available. It's still probably one of the top five VC releases period though. Big week.

TJ SpykeNovember 05, 2007

Alien Soldier is not an import title. It was available in the US via the Sega Channel (just like Golden Axe III was only available in the US through the Sega Channel).

Ian SaneNovember 05, 2007

"Alien Soldier is not an import title. It was available in the US via the Sega Channel"

Oh well I guess I better take back any praise. Releasing a game that was unavailable in a format for Americans to own and is thus impossible to obtain in the used game market just doesn't cut it compared to localizing a game from Japan. My bad. face-icon-small-wink.gif

Super Mario Bros. 3 should have been a launch title for the VC, along with a bunch of other games that came out later. In my opinion, which isn't legally binding yet, it's the greatest game ever made, and I will be downloading it myself as soon as I can.

NeoThunderNovember 05, 2007

So?.....what is the other mario's yet to come to VC

Besides, we should all fight the urge and hold out for Mario All-Stars!!!!!

IceColdNovember 05, 2007

OH!! I just remembered! I was going to do a "Mario Marathon" before Galaxy came out - playing every single Mario platformer in order on one console. Now with SMB2 JPN and SMB3 released, it will come true! I can blast past the 2D games, but I'll really need to pull up my socks when I get to Mario 64 and Sunshine if I want to finish them all in a week.

I don't consider Yoshi's Island to be a true Mario platformer, however great it is. I wonder when it'll come out.

King of TwitchNovember 05, 2007

Not to mention Super Mario Land 1&2

IceColdNovember 05, 2007

Hmm, they were made by Gunpei Yokoi and (what is now) Intelligent Systems, though.. not EAD. And I think New Super Mario Bros was made by EAD, but not the Mario team (they went to EAD Tokyo).

Still, these are technicalities. You're right - I'd be playing every console Mario platformer on one system.

Haha. WRONG.

MashiroNovember 05, 2007

I agree, Super Mario World was a better game than SMB3.

In my eyes at least. I sometimes don't understand why people go ga-ga over SMB3. It's a great game but I think SMW was far better due to the new technology behind the game.

I really, really respect SM3... but Super Mario World is what I personally look at as the "complete package." SM3 is... it could get really hardcore. SMW was for everybody (i.e. me) right out of the gate.

Sad, just sad.

MashiroNovember 05, 2007

What's sad about it?

SMW was far more fun to me than SMB3. SM3 was fun but I just enjoyed the SMW experience.

Well, except for Kairon, I think we can agree that both are better than Far Cry and Alien Syndrome.

*shakes fist*

Person who likes SMW better than SMB3 = Graphics Whore

So the eternal debate of SMB3 vs SMW rages on...

Its good to have the pure unadulertated version though. When I'm running it on an S-video hookup via an LCD TV, there's something up with the edge of the screens. Its like there's some little green blocks at the edge of the screen that flicker every now and again. I have a Magnavox 32 in TV. Anyone else get this?

It is Bowser changing the world ahead of you with his wand!

KDR_11kNovember 05, 2007

SMW > SMB3 because the levels are more fun (and longer), secrets are more meaningful and instead of a crapload of items that you almost never use they only have a small amount of permanent powerups but those are more evolved and well integrated into the level design.

As for the flickering, the NES didn't have enough vid memory to do the tile swaps for scrolling offscreen so you'd see a row of tiles scroll in from the right before it gets replaced with the proper tiles (the alternative would have been tileswaps as the tiles leave the screen so you get the flicker on the left).

As I said, Alien Soldier is not considered import in Europe and the game is completely in English here.

GoldenPhoenixNovember 05, 2007

Mario Bros 3 is perhaps the most balanced, varied, and well designed Mario's ever. In balance I am talking about difficulty, SMW was for the most part super easy while SMB3 had was much more balanced even if you cheated and used the warp whistles. Also it had GIANT WORLD, SMW didn't have that!

ShyGuyNovember 05, 2007

Super Mario Bros 3 is a 10/10. Anyone who disagrees is flat out factually wrong. It's math people! You can't argue with math!

SMB3 also has Kuribo's shoe, the Hammer Suit, and more levels (they may be shorter than those in World, but I felt that a lot of World levels go on too long). World doesn't have much variety in its stages compared to 3, and just doesn't have the magic of 3. World is a great game, but a huge disappointment when you think of it as the follow-up to SMB3.

SMB3 is not a 10/10, it's a 42/10. Not only is it the greatest game ever but it is literally the answer to life, the universe, and everything.

MashiroNovember 06, 2007

It's all personal tastes. I found SMW to be a better experience than SMB3. Not to say SM3 is bad but that's how I felt when I played the game.

You can't crucify someone for thinking like that.

Oh and SMW didn't have that annoying ass pipe world . . . face-icon-small-wink.gif

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorNovember 06, 2007

Y'all are wrong.

Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World is the best Mario game. face-icon-small-wink.gif

Mashiro just gave me a great idea on how to get rid of these SMW preferring people!

Nick DiMolaNick DiMola, Staff AlumnusNovember 06, 2007

SMW == SMB3. Both are amazing in their own unique ways.

But SMB3 has way better unique ways and a lot more of them too.

Ian SaneNovember 06, 2007

I like Super Mario World better. SMB, SMB3 and SMW are all the same general concept and each game adds more and polishes the concept. The jump between SMB and SMB3 is obviously much bigger than the jump from SMB3 to SMW but SMW is the most polished. All three games are absolute must-plays of course and I don't really care if anyone likes SMB3 more than SMW because they're both A+ titles. Sometimes I get this vibe from the SMB3 boosters that SMW sucks or is a big disappointment. That's nuts. We're comparing two of the greatest games ever made.

Super Mario World is so good that I think you really can't go anywhere else with 2D Mario. It's good that Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 64 were so different because I don't see how they could have taken the formula further as is. I like New Super Mario Bros but it feels generic which makes it kinda dull. I think that's because SMW just perfected 2D Mario. Every videogame series is eventually going to reach a point where it can't be improved on, only changed, and SMW was it.

This is so weird because ALL these games rock people! You're splitting...

My friend had never played it before the VC release. Now he can beat it and only die 4 times. Of course, the name The Lost Levels is appropriate, as the game is changed very little from the original, a game which he can beat without dying once.

Well I'll go as far as saying that Jak and Daxter is an EXTREMELY underrated platformer and one of my favorite games of all time (Didn't care for the sequels though), it still is no SMB3 or even SMW!

ShyGuyNovember 06, 2007

Jak and Daxter ranks above Sunshine, but SMB3 and SMW? TWO PLUS TWO DOES NOT EQUAL FIVE

StogiNovember 06, 2007

That was sarcarm.......ya I know, I know.....interweb.

Still, I was making fun of how ridiculous this discussion is.

I'd call this discussion ridiculous, but if we were talking about console Zelda games then I'd be on this like a grizzly bear on a hiker's pants when there's an apple in the pocket.

StogiNovember 06, 2007

I admit that while SMB 3 is not my all time favorite Mario game the power ups do rock. Plus it does have some awesome levels.

MashiroNovember 06, 2007

Yeah much like was said before . . . it's not like the SMW > SM3 people HATE SM3. They are both A+++ titles. I just prefer SMW.

SM3 does though have great power ups but they are used so sparingly at times that it makes me sad.
