TOKYO, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Shares in Nintendo Co Ltd, the world's second-largest home videogame maker, took a battering on Wednesday after it trimmed earnings forecasts and its shipment target for game consoles.

Nintendo's shares ended down 6.96 percent at 12,840 yen, underperforming Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei average, which fell 1.23 percent.

The small size of the GameCube discs makes them easy to manage and cheap to make, but they only hold a fraction of the data a standard DVD-ROM can. While most games can be made to fit in 1.5GB of space, FMV, or full-motion video is much harder to compress without significant loss in video quality.

Everyone cringes when it comes time to buy a new game. £40-£45 ($70US) is always hard to stomach, even for the well off.
