CSFB Console Sales Report

The company reveals who supposedly sold more game consoles over the bulk of the Christmas period. There's something fishy going on here...

Last month, the L.A. Times reported that Credit Suisse First Boston, found between November 11 and December 8, Sony sold 962,000 PS2s, Microsoft moved 934,000 Xboxes, and Nintendo only sold 602,000 GCNs, a number less than it had launched with. The firm cites that more PS2s were sold because Sony could meet the demand, while less Xboxes and GameCubes were because their respective companies could not.

Nintendo's own sales figures are telling a different story. Nintendo's spokeswoman, Beth Llewelyn says, "We've sold over 800,000 GameCubes in the U.S. to date, and we will ship 1.3 million units by Christmas."

The contradiction might be explained by CSFB's reliance on NPD numbers, which have been known to be a little inaccurate in the past. Regardless, it's a bit confusing for us to be getting in all these numbers, and still having no solid idea of who sold more systems is a bit frustrating to all of us.
